  1. TWO Pershing related examples (Sorry no M-29's): Coinciding with Operation Veritable by the British, the American 9th Army launched it's own offensive in the North. OPERATION GRENADE - called for an infantry assault across the Roer river beginning on 23 February 1945, exploited by an armored drive throught the Roer Valley to the Rhine at Dusseldorf and Cologne. Most German mobile reserves had been sent North to deal with VERITABLE; however, the weak 9th and 11th Panzer Divisionsremained under the direct control pf 15th Army to face the American offensive. Thus far the Panther and Tiger tanks had reigned supreme on the western front when facing American tanks with anywhere near equal forces. Only superior numbers had allowed the British and American tankers to defeat the panzers time and again. This was about to change with the introduction of the T-26 heavy tank. On 27 Febuary, CCB/3rd Armoured introduced the panzertrupen to this new threat! Also, Akfeb 19 KM SW of Paderborn, Germany.Eager to complete encirclement of Ruhr Valley General Bradley commanding 12th Army, turned first Army north to link up with ninth Army at Paderborn. In order to beat 2nd Armored Division to Paderborn, General Rose commanding 3rd armored Division, ordered Combat Command R to "Just go like Hell" to cover the last 100km and seize the key junction, putting the Ruhr Valley in the bag. Early on March 30 the leading units of CCR approached Paderborn from the southwest and discovered that German defensive positions had sprung up overnight around Alfen. Manned by students from the SS Ersatzbrigade Westfalen was equipped with a suprising number of Panthers and Tigers. Even though supported by some of the recently arrived M-26 Pershing tanks, the American tankers quickly discovered that the inexperienced students had learned their ;essons well.
  2. David, They are one in the same. Also, expect an all together new chip every six months after it is out. The GeForce 256 is quoted as being four - ten times faster than a pentium III 550 on simple to complex lighting scenarios. Wait till 2 weeks after christmas and buy whatever you need. Now is not the time to buy a new card. ARTICLE on GeForce 256: http://www.zdnet.com/pcmag/stories/trends/0,7607,2326894,00.html Steve stated, "Each forthcoming "standard" claims to be the best, and well, that really is a tall boast to make since it has yet to be seen ---> Well I updated from a TNT Viper 550 to aTNT2 Viper 770 Ultra, and although it is better and smoother and faster, it clearly was not a wise use of a couple hundred bucks. I could have bougtht three more copies of CM and gotten the other Panther print, the King Tiger and the Tiger Print. Also, not much difference between an Ultra TNT2 and a 3DFX card from my experience. Either TNT2 or 3DFX will excel for games optimized for them. Steve makes a great point. Even nVidia is coming out with a new program to release newer faster chips every six months. The technology is exciting and will surely prove to take 3D video gaming to a new level, but Bitboys has a product in BETA for developers that threatens to displace both 3DFX and nVidia. It is 512 bit and nVidia is 256 bit. AND it was announced August 2, 1999. Here is an article: http://www.bitboys.com/a_pr_glaze3d.html
  3. Many games I have played seemed to have artillery with little or no real impact. CM seems to have very powerful artillery which is the way I would believe it to be. QUESTION: What was the impact of artillery on armor? and What will it be on my Tigers? If anyone is interested in seeing pictures (Very well organized) on knocked out German armor go to : http://military.virtualave.net/index.html and look uder Battle victims. You won't be disappointed. Some pictures that really caught my attention were the KINGTIGERs destroyed by artillery, columns of PANTHERS destroyed by Russian artillery.
  4. Sorry for slamming Panzer Elite, but I really expected more. Danao6 ... I agree with all your comments (#1-3 above), but if the American infantry was ineffective against german Tanks, why would they come charging over a hill and running towards me with no artillery or armor in site? I know, it's just BETA. But I have to believe based on my limited experience with Panzer Elite that it is ALPHA, not Beta. However, I will post no more negative feedback about Panzer Elite and will only suggest improvements and point out positives. Being constructive is always a better approach. BTS I look forward to facing a real threat within the coffers of my rolling Tiger coffin in CM. Possibly that will include battleship artillery so I'll need to exit the Tank and dig a pit under my Tiger just to live.
  5. BTS Take your time. The last thing I need in this world is Combat Mission to miss the mark. Think about it: high taxes, inflation on the horizon, losing my hair, pollution, global economic catastrophies and a plethora of old boring games and bad excuses for war simulations. PG2 is really the only game to have held my interest and only because it has evolved into something more like chess for me. East Front has really glitchy sensitive bad code with slow moving vehicles and plenty of problems. SSI Again: Peoples General is no different than PG 2 and PG-3D is worse than either PG 2 or Peoples. MORE SSI: Panzer Commander is just not a good game. Then someone throws Panzer Elite into the mix, and calls it Public BETA. I call it public relations fiasco. All I have to say is Combat Mission is my last hope. Please don't release a bug riddled junky BETA for general release. Carefully choose your BETA crew. Get it right and take all the time in the world. If you don't I may have to go back to drinking beer and spending all my free time chasing tail. Oh and thanks alot for the Panther print, I'll have it framed and displayed above my Panther model.
  6. Have used Panzer Commander about as much as I care too. Just not very realistic and far too much idle time. Panzer ELITE is a lot of fun. I loved using the sight to zero in on the enemy tank. Of course my preferred vehicle was the Tiger, making it easy to eliminate any American Armor. Once the target was in sight the numeric keypad or the mouse could be used to Target the enemy. Smoke is really awesome, and it makes eliminating targets very difficult work. The explosions look very good and the details on the tanks are really quite outstanding. The game is clearly a step above Panzer Commander. That is about all that could be said about my experience. It was easy to complete the mission and eventually, it became very scripted. Now for my overall negative impressions: 1) I must say the game has a lot of bugs to work out!, 2) enemy American tanks act eratic and don't fire quickly enough or often enough. 3) Why have foot soldiers when they simply appear on the horizon and dance like balerinas (? spelling) across the screen until they are eliminated. 4) Panic sucks, they panic and run forever, you need to drive full speed for a long long long time to find the missing little panicked devils. I really hat that. 5) No concept of when the mission is complete or what the mission is. It really would be nice to know why I am about to put my life on the line inside a rolling coffin. Well not really in the case of the Tiger. 6) Spotting is in the game and a nice audible alert indicates that the enemy has been spotted, but then you need to go to external view if not already there and then hit "T" to target and then a bracket appears letting me know what it is and where. I can't even see the enemy on the screen and the AI is telling me exactly what it is and where (TOTALLY Unrealistic). 7) I cannot remember if the game gave any indication of range. The shells are supposed to arch ya know! 8) Hedgegrow does slow the vehicle, but stays up after running it over. SUMMARY: I really can't justify $40 for it, but it is really cool. I base the value of the game, not by how cool it is, but on how it captures my attention. I can sit and play Panzer General II and Peoples General for 100's and 100's of hours. I could only play Panzer Commander for 20 hours total. Never did figure it out. PANZER GENERAL 3D is out and it really sucks bad. It kind-of reminds me of a small-time carnival game in a small tent. The game I remember was one with vehicles in 3-D (plastic and metal) under a large glass bubble and they just kind-of cruise around. But in the case of PANZER GENERAL 3D, the game just plain sucks really bad. It is really difficult to move planes to the correct spot. 3-D did not help Panzer General. You guys better make Combat Mission the best game ever. I really can't go on much longer without a really good game. ALSO, will you please put in support for Bump-mapping and dual-head support. It would be nice to be able to use all the real estate available with Matrox Millenium G400 Max board and by supporting dual head and environmental bump mapping it would further separate Combat Mission from all the rest. Matrox mentions the cards ability to provide awesome detail for shell damage and scratching on metal tank surfaces.
  7. Read a brief section on knocking out the infamous Tiger tank. As we all know, Hitler was creating new divisions and using inexperienced tankers to pilot the new heavy armor. Anyways, an awesome Tiger was traveling on a roadway, when suddenly a soldier stepped out and fired on the TIGER with a rifle. The driver panicked (unhit I might add) and drove off the road and got stuck. If anyone needs the exact details and book, I will find it.
