  1. Why? apart from underlining our respect for the Depot?
  2. You bothered? I would've expected such effort was fundamentally against the Peng slacker philosophy.
  3. Mutual. Good to put faces - even one's I've known in other contexts - to nicknames. Perhaps we can do an arvo excursion to the tank museum out east next spring? You feel kind of tragic on the way there, but it's a fascinatin' place. ;P
  4. Christ no. Not with Melbourne weather. Go in! Circle around the bar to the dining room on the east side. Look for the kind of almost-40 short haired, beared, bespecled, round faced and tummied sort that you might expect would play CM too much and that will be me! I might even cartoon a little tank for the table so you'll know!! *L* Once I've met you, I can cartoon your heads coming out of it!!
  5. I've taken a topographical map of a nearby hills town called Seville and made a 2 x 2.4 km CMBO map. My idea was to have a British brigade (3 bn at about 70+% strength) with generous tank and arty support try to break through a German defence consisting of a static forward zone and deployable/mobile reserves. Version 1 of the map is done but I'd appreciate any interested old hands out there having a look over it. I can provide a .pdf of the topo map area and the '.cmb' file on request. Email harryink@alphalink.com.au if you're interested. [ October 24, 2004, 04:01 PM: Message edited by: HarryInk ]
  6. Yup. I used the points system too to do quick shops for games with friends. I enjoyed slinging back the reviews afterwards. A 1:1 system wouldn't have been so bad...even a 1:2... Ah well.. As long as it's there. : )
  7. Oh this is the slow board! Nevertheless, it's beer in a week's time for the lucky Melbournites!
  8. How excellent, I jumped in tonight to do just such wot yon excellent Mace hus dun. Well dun, yon Mace. Looking forward to eating n' drinkin in a week's time.
  9. Burmp for slow aussies. Alegedly, even one of the sheep-loving denizens of the Lower Peng is to attend!
  10. I swear I'm crying with laughter. This has to be one of the best threads I've ever read. I think Emrys first suggestion - the mojo all night or the CM addicton - remains my favourte... But then there was the house full of drunken ASLers... LMAO... *sniff giggle* Brilliant. Especially the little details like crushed cornchips. I'm in awe of your all. BTW, my other half got in first. She dumped CM in the trash and hid the disk. Smart bugger! (Still... I had BACKUPS!!!! lol)
  11. Well, I am happy to admit I suck at defence. Typically I'm impatient with the lack of forces, having to stretch them rather than concentrate them (as I do in attacks) and the stasis of my dispositions. I'm keenly interested in your opinions here. Green as Jade observed, as I did in the battle I mentions, that the forward layers tend to get overrun, and to stop that the following layers become a melange in order to increase firepower to match the enemy. Alkiviadis's advice of 1. id the focal points of attacks 2. assign them to 'engagement zones' of mobile forces or 'fire sacks' for static units (+ the mob.) 3. work for harmonious relation of elements ideally all w/n effective (more than 50%) ranges. I just gotta go do some testing now about what constitutes 50% ranges for the most common units I use in defences.... : ) Looking forward to WN's upcoming comments. I hope they spark more.
  12. You should put out a call for CMers in Adelaide. I know there are a few players at Band of Brothers who are from Adelaide...
  13. Hmmmm. I should wait for the JasonC post... hehe... but seeing I'm here. By layered I take it you means lines of defence, and possibly lines configured with different assets. In a recent scenario I'd stormed a town but then had to hold off an axis heavy tank assault. Plan A was to use half-squads to keep an eye on his advance, fall back a line of tanks in front of him (foggy, u see) though waitng too see if he left gaps to exploit (I had Hellcats), and fall back through a belt of bazookas who I intended would be the first line of resistance. Theory was I'd pick off a few tanks with the zooks, or get him embroiled against them while I maneuvered with the TDs. Of course, with Hellcats, I couldn't resist. In Plan B, I probed a few times and actually had to drift my zook screen forward as his advance became quite cautious. However, that was a very mobile game with lots of armor and zooks (tho' no ATGs or IGs on my side). I think a dedicated/static layered defence will be quite a different kettle o' fish. I look forward to reading the correct answers. *G* 'Course JasonC's old 'how to defend like a German' might be a partial answer?
  14. BRILLIANT!! After wide consultation, I hearby declare the meet @ to now be at 7pm+ at The Napier Hotel, Fitzroy on THURSDAY 28th October. [The Napier is @ 210 Napier St, corner of Napier & Moor, diagonally opposite the Fitzroy Town Hall.] The acceptance list so far (from here and the Band of Brothers general forum) is: HarryInk ScotCar Mace Don't Panic Major Disaster Kitty Saintfreak Hunter With luck a CMing mate of mine - Jake - will also be back from Bangladesh and will join us too. Excellent work people! All I've got to do now is check that the damn hotel will actually be open that night! (Been caught out once before @ another venue!). 15. Another possible adjustment... Are either Tuesday 26 or Thursday 28 available for you guys. Scott Carpenter (from Band o' Bros) can't do Wednesdays...
  16. Finally it's happened and it p&*%#! me off. One of my opponents is using smoke like I use smoke, goddam his eyes!! (for he's damned mine!) The village is choked with it. All my carefully chosen hull down LOSes aren't worth a damn. And They're coming: I can hear the chevrolets heaving the armor toward me and hear those pommy accents yelling to each other. Arrrrrgghhh... In two or three years of CMing, I've hardly had anyone really use smoke well on me. I love the stuff: it's a moveable wood. My opponents often complain about it. Now it's finally happening to me. I deserve it, I'm sure. But my questions now are: 1. Who out there uses smoke a lot, like me? 2. Who out there kinda wonders how you use it and whether they should start sometime...? 3. What do you do when you've got a nice defence set up and the bugger smokes you. Run? Maneuver? 4. Am I going to live through this attack? lol
  17. Yep. Fine with me, Mace. But a fuller reply is on the prime thread in the BB forum.
  18. Noba, I worry that it'd might cost us more in beer jugs than in your airfare, given your signature. On the other hand, if you did start walking, you'd justify a powerful thirst!! *L* At this point I'm happy to both have a meal @ the Napier (it'd been my first beyond the chips) and to delay 'til the 27th for Don't Panic. Watcha fink, Mace?
  19. Calling Melbourne CMers!! How about a beer at the Napier Hotel, Fitzroy, one week night in late October (before the Xmas rush starts)? I'll suggest Wednesday 20 October 8pm. Post HERE to see if we can organise a quorum. Time and venue negotiable.

  22. You sound like you're chugging along nice, FE. I advise friends to start with the little scenario 'Small Gain' then 'Chance Encounter'. In the first you should practice as the US using cover, appreciating that .50cal HMGs can knock out light enemy armor, and 'tophatting' (hunting to a ridgeline then reversing back to cover, and again, and again) cos your own armor is fragile and you need to protect it. The second (also as US) is fun but not so challenging. It gives you some varied terrain and more space and chance to act with a little dash. Find the CMBO Oracle on a links page somewhere and read up whenever you have a new querie. Welcome and have fun. It's such an engaging game.
