    Great idea, especially when I realized that I did a complete reformat and reinstall recently, which was right about the time that my computer's CM performance was getting on my nerves. Unfortunately, however, it doesn't seem to have made a difference. So much for the free solution. :(

    Doing a preliminary search on eBay, it looks like you can pick up a used (and occasionally new) ti4600 128 MB card for about $100-150. Retail it looks like they’re in the $200-300 range. Sound reasonable? Is there anything in particular to look out for with used video cards?

    I’ve got the upgrade bug and am thinking about a new video card. CM is currently about as graphically intense as my computer use gets, and I’m reasonably happy with what I have now except that things get a bit choppy when I’m playing with all the trees, doodads, etc. turned on. DVD playback is occasionally choppy as well, especially if I have other crap running in the background (which makes me wonder if the video card is really the problem).

    What I have currently:

    Dell Dimension 8200 Series

    P4 2 GHz processor

    768 MB RDRAM

    4X AGP slot with GeForce2 MX 32 MB card

    What I (think I) want:

    Greater video memory (128 MB?)

    DVI output (just got a new LCD monitor)

    Not too terribly expensive (< $200 for sure but lower is better)

    Fully functional with CM

    I don’t know diddly/squat about video cards. Any suggestions or comments? Should I just leave well enough alone for the time being? Is the bottleneck likely to be somewhere other than the video card? Anything else you need to know about my system?

    Yeah! And playing as the English-speakers is as fun as I remember it. Only problem seems to be that I've picked up right where I left off with CMBO:

    "I'm hit!"

    "My arm!"

    "Oh, God!"

    "Medic!!"

    etc.

    At least when I saw my Soviet troops dropping left and right I could imagine they were yelling stuff like "Whoopee, hey, pass me the vodka!" and "Oh goodie, we're all gonna die for the Motherland!"

    CMBB Preferences File AWOL

    Recently reformatted my HDD and reinstalled everything, including CMBB and the patches. For some reason there is no preferences file in my CMBB directory so... you guessed it, I have to reset my preferences every time I open the game. Not a big deal, but slightly annoying. Everything else seems to be working perfectly, and I don't remember any problems with the reinstall.

    So... will I be doing it over again or does anyone have a plan B?

    I nominate Lurkur for the title of "best PBEM opponent". Our first game was over a year ago in the first round of the ol' Fellowship of the Newbie Tourney, and we've had continuous games going ever since. We're evenly matched (I guess some would consider that an insult coming from me), he has a great sense of humor, and he's always forgiving when I forget to send turns, which happens a lot I'm afraid. Don't know what else you could ask for.

    Let's hear it for CMBO!

    Well, it's been a crazy 2003 so far. Exercise more resolution going pretty well. Drink less... well, at least I'm exercising. :)

    I've been astounded lately because every time I'm up for some CM action, I've fired up CMBO. I have no doubt that CMBB is a better game (and I'll go one better [for an Ami] and say we by ourselves didn't save the world), but I just prefer the western front and the originator of the series.

    Am I on crack?
