  1. I got a 0 too, much to my surprise as I didn't spend a lot of time on it. For the rest of the day I'm going to run around yelling, "I'm a zero! I'm a zero!" I doubt anyone will disagree with me. (Male, 30-39)
  2. I love then-and-now pics, and these (both Normandy and Gettysburg) are fantastic. Thanks for posting them.
  3. I swear I've been over here a couple of times since this thread was started, but somehow I missed it. Amazing--thanks for taking the time to share all of this.
  4. We now rejoin "Weird Houston News", already in progress... linkified
  5. Hmmm... Seemed kinda Thin Red Line-ish. I personally liked that movie, though I get why many others didn't. (Enter snippy comment about all the really neat stuff lost in the forum purges here.) In any case, I'll be looking forward to this.
  6. Yeah, maybe, but it was absolutely compelling after that!
  7. Sooooo close! I wasn't rooting for either team and I'm not even much of a hockey fan in general, but I was literally on my feet for the last few minutes of that one. Wow.
  8. I love sausage (in a totally manly way). My favorite is Carle's Bratwurst. But I like it all--hot Italian, smoked, chorizo, kielbasa, etc. It's not something I eat very often, though I enjoy it thoroughly.
  9. Thanks for this. I am not an ASLer but I played enough SL in my day that I wanted to see these.
  10. I went ahead and fixed that for you. Not that it's any of my business at all, but I didn't know you had a Texas connection. Or is Texas now exporting our superior history to other, lesser states? Hmm...
  11. Am I the only one who is not surprised that this was spotted close to Houston? Now I'll be half-expecting to wake up in the middle of the night for no apparent reason and sit up just enough for one to engulf my head and suck brain out of my nose. Or somefink.
  12. I got in and out in less than an hour at my polling station near downtown Houston this morning. The wife canceled out my vote for the third presidential election in a row. Then I got to come home and listened to the wife and my dad (who is visiting from Ohio) argue about which was worse, committing perjury because of a blowjob or the Iraq war. Somebody please tell me election season is OVER!!
  13. Just had to say that this thread is fantastic. I've been laughing all the way through, except for the couple of days where I stopped to take everything off the walls of my house. You know, just in case.
  14. Heh. I spent a whole day on this a couple of months ago. My solution for Mission to Mars: http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=924302. I would never have dreamed of some of the stuff y'all have come up with. Big Ball (that's what she said): http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=912388. Actually pretty similar to GJKs.
  15. Just checking in. Things in my neck of the woods aren't normal, but they're not terrible, either. Still no electricity at home (even though houses within 30 yards of ours have it--grrrr) so I'm posting from my office. Our house suffered what seems like only minimal damage--one, possibly two very minor water leaks and some paint removed from the patios. We live in a 3-story townhouse in a crowded part of town, so I can't actually get far enough away from our building to assess damage to the roof, and I have no way of getting up there myself (not that I would anyway). I'm considering putting in a call to our insurer just to let them know what's going on--if anybody has arguments pro/con for doing so, please chime in. It's USAA so I'm not too worried that they are going to jack us around just for calling, but you never know. Our neighbors have a generator so we took a few frozen steaks, bratwurst, etc. over and stuck them in their freezer. Their power is back on now. We'll end up throwing a bunch of stuff away, but that's much more of an inconvenience than a hardship, especially when there are so many in the areas south and east of us who are suffering mightily. That's all I can think of for now. Am going to spend most/all of the day here trying to get caught up with what's going on around town since I've only had a radio to listen to the past few days. Thanks again to all who have expressed concern.
  16. You sure did. Let me find the threa... Oh, yeah. They've all been nuked. GJK, stuff like you remembering 1) how to spell my idiotic user name, 2) that I live in Houston, and 3) that I might need a place to crash during a storm like this is why this is (was?) a real community in the best sense. Abbott, I appreciate your post very much as well. Thank you. Jeff P.S. I was shocked to learn today that the Rangers are the highest scoring team in the AL. I was less shocked to learn that they also have given up more runs per game than any other staff in the AL.
  17. Still drop by and lurk occasionally. I just remain a little peeved about BFC wiping this place clean--again--but I guess that's neither here nor there. Thank you one more time for your most generous offer. The wife is going to her hospital and I am going to ride it out at home with our geriatric cats. If things go like they are supposed to, we will have 80-ish mph winds in this part of town. Not fun, but also not likely to be catastrophic. Believe it or not, I still have your phone #s in my cell phone from Rita in 2005. Perhaps in a couple of days I'll see the error of my ways, but that storm was hugely more scary than this one. 175 mph (!) winds a few days out, and < 1 month after Katrina to boot. Eeeep. Those GF denizens who are into such things, please keep the 5.6 million residents of the greater Houston area--not to mention points east--in your thoughts.
  18. On a completely unrelated note, the first annual USPS Workers' CMAK tounrey is starting soon! Grab a "sample" copy ASAP!
  19. KTN, I recently upgraded my video card (with the help of Schrullenhaft) and have a 32 MB GeForce2 MX 1X/2X/4X AGP card I no longer need. I think it's just the plain MX but it may be the MX 400; I don't remember. If you can use it and would be willing to cover the shipping, I'd be happy to send it to you. Was planning on selling it on eBay but it's only worth a few bucks. Post or email me if interested. [ February 06, 2004, 04:47 PM: Message edited by: GWDWD ]
  20. Got the card installed yesterday and have seen a noticable improvement. Thanks again to everyone who helped out in this thread.
  21. Here's an interesting book (NAYY) I picked up after seeing it mentioned on these boards some time ago. Definitely worth a read, though it's written from a decidedly strategic rather than tactical standpoint. Table of contents: 1. Unpredictable Victory: Explaining World War II 2. Little Ships and Lonely Aircraft: The Battle for the Seas 3. Deep War: Stalingrad and Kursk 4. The Means to Victory: Bombers and Bombing 5. Along a Good Road: The Invasion of France 6. A Genius for Mass-production: Economies at War 7. A War of Engines: Technology and Military Power 8. Impossible Unity: Allies and Leaders in War 9. Evil Things, Excellent Things: The Moral Contest 10. Why the Allies Won I liked it, though I am hardly a grog and enjoyed Beevor's books too. YMMV.
  22. Thanks, Schrullenhaft. Just a non-techie reading stuff he doesn't understand and freakin' out. I guess it's kinda like the little old ladies who get printouts of all the possible side effects of their medications at Walgreen's and come to me thinking if they take the pills they're a goner. Whatever BFC is paying you, it isn't enough.
  23. Grrrr.... Today I was looking around at some info on installing video cards so I'll be ready when the one I bought arrives. It appears from this website that my motherboard can only handle a 1.5 V AGP card. A manual I found for the Asus V8460 says (on the bottom of page 12) that a 3.3 V power supply is needed. So my questions: 1) I'm screwed, right? 2) If so, what would be a good card that I could use with my motherboard? I had no idea that these types of compatibility issues even existed. 3) Anybody want to buy a nice used Ti4600 video card? I should just stick to something I know, like beer. [edit: Hmmm... doing a quick Google seach with ti4600 and "dimension 8200" shows that there are apparently lots of people who are using that type of card in that type of machine. Not sure if their situations are different than mine, though. Since I don't actually have the card in my posession, I'm not chomping at the bit yet to try it out. I'll just anxiously await someone who knows what they are talking about to chime in! Thanks for your help.] [ December 17, 2003, 07:27 PM: Message edited by: GWDWD ]
  24. So I ended up winning an auction for a used Asus V8460 Ultra GeForce 4 Ti4600 128mb card for $120 shipped. I was kinda hesitant to buy used electronics through eBay, but the guy I bought it from has 100% positive feedback with over 700 reviews. Hopefully it will be okay. I greatly appreciate the input of everyone who has helped out in this thread. Next up (in a week or so): Yet Another I Can't Get My New Video Card to Work Thread!
  25. Thanks. Need some time to digest, but video cards are most certainly not a hobby of mine! This is exactly the kind of info I'm looking for!!
