  1. Big Joe: [shouting to the captured German Colonel] Look! We're not worried about the German army, we've got enough troubles of our own. To the right General Patton, to the left the British Army, to the rear our own goddamn artillery, and besides all that it's raining. And the only good thing to say about the weather: it keeps our air corps from blowing us all to Hell because its too lousy to fly, versteh?

    Best quote from a movie chock full of good ones. It was Telly's finest role.

  2. 1. On my rig the game does not exit gracefully. It hangs after hitting END and the whole screen goes black. To completely exit I have to terminate the process in task manager. I'm running an ATI 4850 video card and an AMD quad cord. Window 7 64 Home. I can provide more detailed specs on request.

    A common issue w/ ATI cards and W7 64 bit. To fix upgrade your drivers to 11.5.

  3. Since I spent about 2 hours doing this I thought I would share the results for two reasons:

    - Many have had questions about eking out FPS and the impact of this setting or that setting

    - I know I love to steal others settings that are proven to work so I figured I could return the favor

    System specs:

    AMD PhenomII X4 965 Black Edition Quad-Core CPU (3.4Ghz)

    MSI 770-G45 AM3 770 Chipset CrossFireX Support DDR3 Socket AM3 ATX Mainboard

    6GB (2GBx3) DDR3/1600MHz Dual Channel Memory Module

    Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit

    600 Watts Power Supply (XtremeGear SLI/CrossFireX Ready Power Supply)

    ATI Radeon HD 5670 1GB DDR5 16X PCIe Video Card [DirectX 11 Support]

    DX 11 & DX 9 installed

    - Running game on a 23” Samsung monitor at 1920x1800 rez

    Benchmark approach:

    - FRAPS (many insist that FRAPS itself steals a bunch of frames from CM games – don’t know if that is really the case or not)

    - Saved a turn about 2 minutes in from the third battle.

    - Replayed 60 seconds of the next turn w/ FRAPS over and over again at the same view level w/ the lead tank locked up. (Note: was impressed by the variations in results each turn.)

    Game graphics settings that I am now using:

    Display = desktop (1920x1800)

    Vsync = Off

    3D Model = Improved

    3d Texture = Best

    AA/Multi-sample = On

    High = On

    ATI = On

    Shadows = Off

    Frames Time (ms) Min Max Avg

    2288 60000 24 53 38.133

    Observations:

    - Shadows KILL FPS as can be seen by comparing the first two benchmarks (low settings/shadows on to low settings/shadows off). So goodbye shadows – sigh.

    - The 3D Model setting has an effect on FPS as well – and “Improved” (coupled w/ setting Texture to Best) looks the same to me as higher settings so “Improved” it is.

    - AA/Multisample has the largest effect on GFX quality – duh! – so must be set to On

    - Turning the High Priority setting to On gave me a +5 FPS boost and did not seem to effect anything else so…set to On.

    - All CCC settings were set to their lowest level or application controlled. I did do another round of benchmarking consisting of turning these all on or up high and found they had NO effect on GFX quality but most hit FPS – so I’m keeping them at the lowest settings.

    The settings above give me the best balance of smooth game play and GFX quality. Of course, your mileage may vary.

    Someone piss in your Cheerios this morning Fritz?

    :)

    It will be out this week. Hey, I'm ony on my 10th turn of the first Demo battle so I have a ways to go. Perhaps that's why I'm so calm.

  5. That's what I was wondering...does Moon mean "Not May 20th, but later", or "Not May 20th, but earlier."

    Guess which one I'm rooting for?

    Believe we have to give Moon some credit here as if the game was to be released next week he would have stated - "not this week." But he did not state that at all and therefore I am thinking later today or tomorrow appears likely.

  6. De Savage do you have Windows 7 64bit with an ATI vid card? I had this problem...it seems after exiting the game there is still a process running and you have to manually close this before you can run it again. Updating to the newest 11.5 Catalyst drivers has fixed this for me.

    Me too. Same issue and 11.5 fixed it.

    Hmm...no I didn't - but I will tomorrow morning. I'll report the results here.

    Tested CCC based AA - not only does it look worse but FPS went down. Advice for ATI users - set AA in game to On and set CCC AA to the lowest setting = Multi-sample

  8. I did some benchmarking w/ my ATI card and had the issue when AA was set to Super-sample. It could be in conflict w/ the in-game AA setting.

    Here are my settings that I found to give me the best combo of speed and nice GFX:

    Game settings:

    Display = desktop

    Vsync = Off

    3D Model = Improved

    3d Texture = Best

    AA/Multi-sample = On

    High = On

    ATI = On

    Shadows = Off

    CCC settings:

    SV HD Anti-Aliasing = Use app

    SV HD Anostropic Filtering = Use app

    Tesselatiom = Use app

    AI = Performance (disable)

    Mipmap Detail = High Performance

    Vertical Refresh = Off

    AA = Multi-sample

    Open GL = Triple Buffer

    Try these and perhaps they will work.
