    What's wrong with S. Ambrose's books?

    I'm sorry Pak40 but Ambrose' obsessive focus on the "small picture" and his lack of footnotes or even endnotes disqualify him from, IMO, being considered as a serious historian, no matter his credentials.

    His plagerism was probably due to (ironically) his popularity and the pressure to publish more product. He is fast becoming the Stephen King of WWII literature.

    Keegan is running a close second here I believe. I did enjoy his "Six Armies in Normandy" as a bit of light reading - his presentation was interesting - but it is not comparable to say, Carlo De'Este's "Decision in Normandy" as a detailed or scholarly work.

    The book "Closing w/ the Enemy..." is excellent as is "Eisenhower's Leutenants(sp?)" - you can read my review of the latter book on Amazon.com - it's the second one under the name A Reader from FL (I don't know where my name got to - I am registered :( ).

    PS; Ignore the 3rd review - the guys a hack.

    Voodoo 5 Issue

    Didn't have to go to single chip - went to 2xFSAA instead - it was set to fastest after all - and that cured the problem.

    BTW, I am using the x3dfx beta drivers version 1.04.01 w/ no issues. You can ge them here at;

    One final issue/question - when I exit the game I get a horizontal bar about 2 inches wide of darker shading moving from left to right across my screen. Ever seen this?? And if so, does it mean anything??

    Voodoo 5 Issue

    Err...

    It occurs to me that I KNOW the card is set to 2 FSAA in OpenGL. I have no idea what it is set for in DirectX - which CM runs in - right??

    Well, I just did a search on Voodoo5 topics in the Tech forum and got some tips.

    I'll do some testing tonight.

    Thanks for all the replies guys - I will get into the demo this weekend and probably order next week.

    Truth is I have already visited the Scenario Depo site and Der Kessel and have downloaded some stuff.

    And I did find many familiar ASL scenarios.

    I will tell you all how the demo goes.

    Hakko - Barkhorn is my nic - after the 2nd highest scoring Luftwaffe ace - I fly sims too.

    I am a total newbie and in the midst of downloading the demo. I have played ASL for many years and am intrigued by what CMBO has to offer.

    Some questions;

    1. Are there add-on demo scenarios?

    2. Assuming I go ahead and order the full game, what 3rd party mods are "must have"??

    3. What else is important that I need to know?

    System specs;

    AMD Athlon 1.2 GHz CPU

    256 mb PC133 SDRAM

    Soyo Socket “A” motherboard (SY-K7VTA-B)

    Via KT-133 chipset

    52x speed CD ROM drive

    Voodoo 5 5500 AGP card w/ Wicked GL driver

    SoundBlaster 128 Voice sound card
