  1. I must either improve rapidly or my sig must be changed! background: my interest is semi-historical scenarios; I could regularly take Moscow in the demo at Expert+0; current game is '39 scenario following historical route of Poland, Denmark, Norway, Low Countries, France, then skipped Yugo to attack Russia in late '40. It's now early '42 and I haven't even taken Minsk or Kursk. I've attained L5 industrial tech but Russia's L2 infantry and L1 armor are eating my guy's lunch! This is at Intermediate (+50%) level. The USA just joined the Allied team so I'm guessing it's all over.... Was the full version supposed to be that much harder? Ego Killer: Hope I can pull out a V replaying at Beginner.
  2. Whilst I appreciate the suggested "date" name for saves, I like a to reuse a file I've named "temp" for my saves. It takes way too many keystrokes however. 1. click on save 2. backspace over the always defaulted "date" name 3. type in "temp" 4. hit return 5. click on YES to confirm (won't accept return!) My preferred solution would be a quicksave (and corresponding quickload) hotkey; one click and you're done. Your consideration is appreciated.
  3. I'm getting a repeatable lockup after confirming QUIT. Immediately before QUIT I save the game to a file I named temp. After clicking on YES, music plays and the screen is frozen except for the cursor. Alt-ctl-del no effect; must use reset button. This particular game is in early '42 with large numbers of troops battling in Russia. Annoying; minor.
  4. I received mine in today's (Friday) mail. I preordered.
  5. O'k here's a little wargaming history for all you young'uns out thar'... My first boardgame was Tactics II circa 1959. By 1961 Avalon Hill had expanded its wargame line to include: U-Boat: up to 3 subs v. 3 destroyers; lead ships on a large chessboard; much fun... Civil War: grand strategy game, long forgotten even at the time it was published Chancellorsville: still have this one D-Day: destined to become one of the classics Gettysburg: no hexs; really a mini miniatures game Tactic II: the original game of military strategy from the Chancellorsville box description: "On this field, you thke your command. Your generalship, your skill and daring decide the outcome. ... (a) game designed for those who enjoy the thrills and excitement of all-skill, realistic games for adults. Always, to play an Avalon Hill game is an exhilarating challenge... to give one a subtle compliment."
  6. I first updated the Gold demo, then deleted and reinstalled from the full download. No go either way.

  8. I have the DX8.1, but with the demo patch, SC gives an error msg that Direct X 7.0 or later not detected. I have re-installed both DX and SC with no change. Athlon 800; 512mb ram; Asus K7V mb Creative Riva TNT Graphics Blaster Creative SB value edition What else can I tell you?
  9. Wow! Totally agree, plus..... (afaik) It's Never Been Done Before!!!
  10. Isn't it just..... About time to close this way oot thread!
  11. posted by arax3: I'll throw out a tweak for discussion. How about doubling the cost of transport that is allowed to land at a non-port destination. The current Transport choice would become Transport (Port) and a new choice, at double the cost, would be Transport (Any). Any salutes?
  12. Very much agreed! The higher level of abstraction, the higher the design difficulty. Not just the what's in and what's out of the game itself, but communicating the game's concepts to its audience. Posts in this forum indicate a relatively bug free beta, but much second guessing of design concepts. Perhaps HC could write a forward to the game telling his goals for historical accuracy vs fun game play, single player vs multplayer, etc. (I know a lot of this has come out in HC's replies, but not everybody looks at old posts before posting, so a lot of ground is rehashed over and over). It's interesting to note the paucity of posts concerning trying "mainstream" historical alternatives for the Axis. Guess that will have to wait for the full game. Meanwhile maybe a FAQ of settled concepts would be in order. The feedback is all good. The occasion drift into personal attacks is not. How anyone could imagine there are "sides" taken for/against this game at this stage is mind boggling! HC deserves congrats for keeping a great sense of humor and open mind during the beta.
  13. THE most important change, of course, is for the status to change from Beta to Gone Gold! Seems like the comments are getting repetitive lately and can't be evaluated within the context of the demo. So on the the real thing asap.....
  14. I've been foregoing the attacking Vichy to get a jump start on Barbarossa. My impression is that there less opposition the earlier Russia is attacked. This could be mistaken though. Does anyone know anything about whether Russian defences go up each turn before it's invaded? (or any other neutral for that matter?)
  15. Is there a rule that all game criticism must be one long paragraph?
  16. In the course of playing the demo over 20 times so far, I've come to a modest understanding of most aspects of the game (including the coolness of getting that first Atlantic sub into occupied France for a bump to 11 ). However the one unyielding mystery is how to increase unit experience. Can anyone share some tips?
  17. I give up, are your assertions valid, mistaken, right, wrong, solid, vapid or just plain trolling? How about some facts to work with along with the rhetoric? What level were you playing; would you care to share an AAR; what specifically did the AI do that concerns you? Perhaps, just for context, you could tell us what other wargames you like.
  18. Excellent! I've similarly attacked early, but never taken Moscow. Got right up next to it though playing on expert+0 level. One slight difference is that I've usually attacked the Baltic States first so all my attacks were overland. In every game I've played the AI has changed up its gameplan. If the demo is this replayable...
  19. Since I'm 0 for 2, I may as well go for broke. ST, then are you saying that if FOW is on, the End of Turn Research Development will always just say "(none)"?
  20. SuperTed: Are you saying that the End of Turn Summary will inform me of my opponents research progress, but I will have to make a pencil and paper note of it since the game will not remember it for me? Bummer! I hate taking notes!
  21. I've had research advances (as high as level 5 armor ) but no advances ever show up in the Last Turn Summary. Also in the table of all countries' advances, I can only see my countrie's technology improvements. Is that by design? IMHO this is an extremely well abstracted game with an excellent AI. The feedback is indicating to me that "selling" the design philosophy may be a major challenge. I'm pleased that HC is both willing to listen, but tough to hang on to his vision for this. Way to go Hubert!!!
