  1. Modding the voices so that everyone speaks English is just about the most tasteless and inane suggestion I have ever seen on these boards. The person who raised the question hasn't posted in over a year, so I'm assuming (and hoping) that this is a dead topic.

    The two Spanish forums got together a while back and put together a sound mod to convert the German voices into Spanish. That was a bit different, because they needed Spanish for the Division Azul on the Eastern Front, and also to play Spanish Civil War scenarios that sounded convincing. The quality of the voice-acting was far better than what we get with standard CMBB, but unfortunately the quality of the sound was very poor. I had actually condsidered creating a Vichy French mod along similar lines (Italians or Germans speaking French), but never bothered because, at the end of the day, the firepower profile of the French army isn't modeled in CM (sigh). It wouldn't have been all that hard in theory, and would merely have involved a renumbering of existing French voices. But at this stage in my life I have no tolerance for mods that create the appearance of something without the underlying substance.

    The original version of this thread petered out in July 2003. Why is it being revived?

  2. You start with a clean install of CMBB. There shouldn't be any mods in the bmp folder.

    Do a search for the Mike T tutorial on how to use cmmods. It's very useful. But you're going to have to read the readme files.

    Rulesets are the instructions to the cmmos program to switch different bmp options in and out of the bmp folder. The program can't work without them.

    The two best places to read up on cmmos are at the cmhq site and at various places in cmmods. You should also do a search here for a link to Mike T's tutorial.

    The US CDV Special Edition that's mentioned higher up in this forum comes with a few standalone mods and a lot of cmmos material. It's not expensive, and the US version doesn't have wafflegrenadiers and dummed-down text (it's just like the Battlefront version). You can buy it through any number of on-line retailers, I would recommend Chris Dean at Naval Warfare Simulations (and I hope I don't get in trouble for saying that) but there are plenty of others.

    I'm not really the person to ask about the inner workings of cmbb cmmos, so your best bet is to find the source material and spend some time studying it. Mike T doesn't come around as often as he used to.

  3. Your first stop is to go to cmhq at combatmission.com and download and install all of the cmbb cmmos material. If you're ever at a loss for what to use, there's usually a better version of it in cmmos.

    Once you've got that up and running you can start with DD's terrain.

    Then go to cmmods and download every tank, gun, and truck that shows up in your scenario. If you can't find something German in the CMBB section, it is probably in the CMAK section (they're almost interchangeable). Always go for Mikey D, Uncle Tgt, and mchlstrt first when choosing mods. (I'm mentioning these names because I think you'll need them for the period you're covering). Pat has done some great work as well, and you will probably end up using his trucks.

    Get the Andrew T Fox uniforms from cmmods -- it has the most recent versions.

    Get my minefield markers from cmmods and my barbed wire from the fortification pack that I just posted in the cmak section. You can ignore my Little Semiotics mod because you're not going to show any flags (apart from the ones that appear at the bottom of the screen). Make sure you get Mikey D's Rubble.

    If there's going to be snow on the ground you really should look at Gurra and Uncle Tgt's terrain mods. And if you're going to have a snow environment you'll have to decide whether your vehicles should be freshly whitewashed (Dey), losing their whitewash (Uncle Tgt), or just snow-covered (DavidI).

    There are some great hidden unit marker mods, but you can ignore them because you don't want them to show up in screenshots.

    Undaunted's sky mods are an absolute must.

    Playing around with all of this and figuring out what you really need to use should take you about a month.

  4. When you're at My Images there will be a bunch of liitle squares on the screen.

    Next to the little squares are some tiny letters.

    The top letter is alway 'i'.

    Click on it.

    You'll get a pop-up with two sections of text.

    The first section is lablelled full-size. There's a box for putting a check marker next to it.

    The second section is labelled thumbnail. It also has a box for checking. In your case that is probably the one that's checked.

    Check the box next to the text that reads full-size in bold letters.

    The first section will be for forums, and that is what you want.

    Experiment with it by posting an image here.

    I hope you're planning on doing an AAR about a game against a human being rather than the AI.

  5. I've posted the first version of the Fortifications pack to the CMAK section of CMMODS.

    The idea behind the pack was to get different mod artists to make variations of somebody else's work, but in their own style. Most of this work is compatible with CMAK and CMBB.

    So I asked a few people to play around with my dirt trench, and this is what came back:

    The pack currently includes work by Gautrek (sand trench), David I, and Uncle Tgt.

    My apologies to everyone for rushing this out, but there are storm clouds brewing on my personal horizon, and I don't want to run the risk of these things getting lost in my hard drive. I'm hoping that this will inspire others to finish the project, and to extend it to other people's work as well.

    The pack also includes my minefield markers and barbed wire (not much point in putting snow on these, but it's nice to have them all in one place).

    Please back up your originals, and, since much of this work isn't mine, please don't re-use it without contacting David, Uncle Tgt, or Gautrek.

    And I'm looking forward to doing more extensive versions of this.

  6. This is quite off-topic, but I noticed a thread about what games work with Vista at another website (The Wargamer), and I was interested to note that CMAK and CMBB were both listed as working with Vista. I think I also saw something about making sure you had the right video cards and drivers.

    If you're having problems, have you tried sending an e-mail to Matt or Schrully to see if they can suggest something? Let us know if they come back with something useful, but, once again, technical posts are better being left out of comedy forums (like this one).

I think if you're really going to launch yourself on a project this large you'll have to forget about everybody else and simply make an AAR that you would want to read if it were written about a game that you weren't involved in. Keep this in mind: if it's a chore for you to write, it will be deathly dull for everyone else, so figure out how to amuse yourself first, and if people don't want to read it they can go look at something else.

    Do a search for a thread I posted in the CMAK section of the forum last fall called Postcards from Italy.

    The secret premise behind that thread was that AAR's might not be as interesting for other people to read as they are for people who were involved in the actual game.

    So the trick was to try to reduce every entry to about five words or less, and to set up a screenshot that told it all without explanation.

    In other words, I made the kind of AAR that I would like to read since I'm intolerant and have a short attention span: very few words, lots of pictures.

    If you do go that route, or even if you just include a few pictures, try to keep this in mind:

    the screenshots should try to look as much like movie stills as possible, so no visible bases, no flags, no location text, no damage messages, no targeting lines, no gridded terrain. The easiest way to get that effect is to simply hit shift Q before you start taking screenshots. And to get the exact shot that you want you will often have to run the movie over and over hitting the pause button at quarter-second intervals.

    As for Image shack, thumbnails are a pain for two reasons: they take forever to load, and they're littered with advertisements which, as often as not, set off people's anti-virus alarms.

    So if you want to be sure that people actually look at your hard work, put the full-size image directly into your posts. And remember to trim off the "shot by/on" text that will appear just under each message.

    But most important, if you're going to make a lot of images, be sure to use good mods.

  8. R2's wonderful scenario 'Les Samurai de Roosevelt' has been translated and posted to the Scenario Depot II with the author's permission.

    Here is a view from one of the American positions down the road toward the American objective, the crossroads leading to Sant'Angelo d'Alife.

    The scenario involves an attack by the Nisei-American 100th Infantry Battalion from Hawaii on a German rearguard in the aftermath of the crossing of the Volturno.

    It is also a great example of French map making.

    The original (French) version of this scenario by R2 can be found at Appui-Feu.

  9. Razor wire (as opposed to coiled or concertina) is a fairly recent invention and wasn't used in WW II. But there's a coiled barbed wire mod over at the old combatmissions site that works in all three games. Here's the link since most people have probably forgotten how to get there:

  10. I just installed this mod and took a look at it in the On the Road to Niscemi scenario.

    Between Pat's new red tile roofs and the rough terrain I'm in heaven ! And really wanting to book a flight to the Mediterranean.

    I do hope you put out a set of doodads in shades that match the ones of your mods. And I'll be doubly impressed if you do, because who ever remembers what slider settings they used.

    It probably doesn't matter because I simply tried the different versions until I found one that I liked, and I suspect that this was the intent behind the mod. But it would be nice to have a readme file explaining what each texture is supposed to represent. Actually, they don't represent anything, they're just different shades of different colors, and depending on what else and how much of it is getting used in the landscape, different arrangements will look better or worse.

  11. I really liked the Vuosalmi campaign, really a series of 14 unlinked but very closely related scenarios about a key battle in the Winter War. You can play them in order or separately, and they take place on different parts of a single huge map that eventually shows up in one of the later battles. They're over at CMMODS.

    Another one that is supposed to be very good (I haven't had a chance to play it) is the Seelowe Heights series of battles. These can also be found over at CMMODS either in the Winter 44-45 or Spring 45 part of the Sorted Scenarios.

    The other thing you should try is Eichenbaum's Crimean campaign (storfang). The history of how it actually works is a bit complicated, but the maps and mods that go with it are really, really good. Do a search under his name, and in one of his last two or three posts he gave links to the scenarios.

    And if you like historical material, take a look at Richie's Stalingrad and Fall of Berlin work. You can get it from the Sorted Scenarios, but it's much more fun to visit his website.

  12. If you're new to CMBB you should probably look at anything by Andreas. His fictional scenarios are actually more historical than most historical ones. You might want to check out a website called "I still wish it were Der Kessel".

    As far as your more specific interest goes, visit cmmods, go to the cmbb section, look for something called Sorted Scenarios, download the summer, fall, and winter 1941 selections, and check the operations screens for each of these. Assuming that you really want to play operations.

    Another alternative, if you want a string of historically related scenarios, is to downlad the Winter War part of the Sorted scenarios -- there's a great series of Finnish-Soviet battles in there that can be played in historical order.

  13. I think all you have to do is to click on "Forgot User Name". You'll get an e-mail ten minutes later, then you can click on "Forgot Password". I have to do this kind of thing all the time.

    I'm assuming that at some point in the past you had registered at cmmods.

    Sadly, I'm still forced to be Philippe_in_Exile there rather than padivine because I think the records show that my old e-mail was at AOL (gah! -- another reason to hate AOL). This effectively precludes me from updating any of my old mods without starting new versions.
