  1. I went through what you're going through a few months ago when my computer got replaced, so this is what I think is the best thing for you to do.

    1) For the moment, ignore any version of CMMOS that came on your disk, and ignore CMMOS 4.05.

    2) Go to CMHQ and get CMMOS 4.03. Here is the link to the CMMOS section: http://www.combatmission.com/cmmos/cmmos.asp

    3) For the moment, ignore CMBB CMMOS.

    4) Download the CMMOS 4.03 program and all of the downloads pertaining to CMBO from the CMHQ site.

(There are a lot of these, so you will need to set up a system to keep track of what you have installed and what you haven't. I suggest a sub-folder for the program and another subfolder for all the mods).

    5) Install CMMOS 4.03 and all of its related mods from the CMHQ site. Do not go on to the next step until you are absolutely sure you've got CMMOS fully installed and working properly.

    6) Go to CMMODS and at the very minimum get Darknight's 21rst Army Group and my Semiotics mods. If you understand how to add mods to CMBO CMMOS and make them work (a bit tricky until you get the hang of it) you can customize your CMBO CMMOS installation all you want. And at this point you can install 4.05 if you really want to (it doesn't really have any impact on CMBO CMMOS, and if you can set up any functional rule-set from 4.05 in 4.03 and have it work perfectly as long as you set it up correctly in the first place).

It's best to start this process on an unmodded version of CMBO. Unmodded versions of CMBO are fairly easy to come by because on the old disks you could just go into explorer and copy and paste the bmp file from the disk to your hard drive (it's a big file, takes a while).

Please note that CMBO cmmos covers about 95% of the mods that are out there for CMBO. And we probably preserved a few that shouldn't have been preserved (oddly enough two of the flag bmp's that slipped out of my Vexillology section were quite good and were mine, but nobody seems to like flat flags anymore so it's no big deal).

CMBB CMMOS works completely differently from CMBO CMMOS. And it only covers about 30% of the mods that are out there. So don't clutter yourself up with it for now, though you should use it (possibly in combination with McMMM) when you get into the Eastern Front. For CMAK, not enough of the mods appear in CMMOS format to justify the effort of installing them. Go with McMMM or do it manually.

  2. Yes.

If you go to the winzip site and download and install their product you'll get to use it for about a month before they start harassing you to buy. I think rar starts in sooner, but it's not obnoxious. I strongly recommend rar -- it is much easier to use, and is flexible enough to handle other people's products. It seems better at handling zip files than winzip, and I actually use it for zip more often than I do for rar.

My problem with winzip is that the interface was designed by computer technicians and marketers, and is therefore incomprehensible to a normal person. Rar is set up so all you have to do is push the first button -- if you really want to get obsessive you can learn what the other ones are for, but you won't need to because you really don't need them and they are self-explanatory anyway. Self-explanatory does not seem to be a popular concept at Winzip.

  3. The Bundle pack consists of two separate games, and each game has its own patch.

The 1.08 patch is for SC 2 Blitzkrieg.

SC 2 WaW has its own 1.01 patch.

All games require patching these days, so it's a good idea to get used to doing it.

Make a separate folder somewhere where you won't forget, and call it something like "Patch Folder". I keep mine in C:\Program Files\A Patch Folder so it appears at the top of my folder list.

Download the two patch zip files to this folder.

The patches will be zipped and you will have to unzip them. Unzip them to the patch folder, and not to the game.

[if you've never done that before you will need to install Winzip or Winrar software. You can get trial versions of either one easily enough by googling, downloading, and installing. Both programs will eventually harass you to buy them, and last I looked Winzip (the most commonly used) had inserted a very annoying day timer that counts -- very slowly -- how many days you've been using the program for free before it allows you to unzip. Winrar is a better program, and allows you to unzip in just about any format, and zip in zip or rar format. And it's timer feature is just a simple one-click for not buying the free program (next time I'm flush I get around to buying it -- it's that good). So my advice is to go with rar, it won't annoy you as much, it's easier to use, and if someone sends you a rar file by mistake you won't be stuck. The link to their site can be found at http://www.rarlab.com/

And if you ever forget, the download section at subsims.com for Silent Hunter III has links to winrar and winzip at the top of the Silent Hunter III page.]

When you've unzipped the patches to the patch folder you will find that they are both self-installing files. All you need is to have the game already installed before you try to patch them. [seems obvious, but I've done this one once or twice]. Some patches now ask you to repeat the security code that you used when you installed the game. I can't remember if that happens with SC 2 or not, but if you bought a hard copy the cd code is usually fixed to the cd jacket or the back of the manual with a sticker.

  4. Parts of it did exist, and the maps were inspired and fabulous. It was also accompanied by some brilliant terrain mods, some of which are still to be found at cmmods. Unfortunately my old computer died with along with the files, so I was only able to glimpse the maps and play the firtt operation in the campaign. Now, sadly, it's just a memory.

  5. As I understand it, it is not an in-house Battlefront project, and they didn't even plan or initiate it. That goes a long way to explain the lack of communication by the Battlefront team, because there is very little that they can communicate. I suspect their only real involvement would have been in testing and quality assurance. They probably only agreed to allow the project in the first place on the condition that it didn't disrupt their business model or take very scarce resources away from critical projects. That's probably why they don't visit much. Last time I looked there were only three or four of them (including one programmer), and they have their hands full with CMSF.

  6. @ Jersey John

I'm not that familiar with the biographical details of de Falla, but I suspect that there are several tons of material written in Spanish.

You might want to try looking to see if Jose Luis Garcia has written anything about de Falla. I studied violin with him and his brother back in the sixties, and Jose Luis was quite the de Falla specialist. I have a very dim recollection of his saying something about de Falla having to keep his head down to survive Franco, but that was a long time ago, memories fade, and there were many phases to de Falla's life (including, I think, a stint in Argentina).

My mother studied piano very briefly with Paderewski. I have no biographical information about him to pass on, except to note that I discovered later in life that he was probably responsible for the horrible drawing-room liliting style that my mother used to play Chopin. I realized this when I heard a reconstructed recording of early Paderewski playing Chopin, and recognized the style immediately (shudder). I really, really hope that that stylistic abomination was a Paderewskian innovation, and not something picked up from the composer.

  7. You might want to take a look at the CMAK section of CMMODS and check out the zips of Sorted Scenarios. Anzio and Salerno scenarios would both be in the Italian section of the sort. To find the actual scenarios you would have to load the folder of Italian scenarios and eyeball the scenario descriptions in the scenario menu. They shouldn't be too hard to find if you don't have to sift through all the other theaters.

I've just posted an authentic flag mod for SC 2 Blitzkrieg 1.08 over at CMMODS.

It is similar to the mod I already posted for SC2 WaW, except that it includes updated flags for the global warfare scenario.

The SC2 Authentic Flag mod concentrates on the 3-D flags. A temporary stop-gap measure has been put in place for the Nato 2-D icons. They will be revisited in subsequent versions of the mod. I don't particularly like the Nato icons in the large campaigns, but they look a lot more appropriate in the battles. So I'll need to give the matter some more thought, and, yes, resizing them is one possibility, though it's probably a prohibitive amount of work for very little return.

The SC 2 mod has the same file structure as the game, so all you have to do to install it (if you're too lazy to make back-ups) is unzip it to a holding folder and copy and paste "Strategic Command 2 Blitzkrieg" to the same folder that has a folder with that same name in it (probably something like C:\Program Files\Battlefront).

But realize that this is only version 1.0 and that it is always a very good idea to make back-ups of your original.

  9. I don't think the two games will really compete all that much. JMM's game looks like it will be a real wargame that allows you to simulate historical battles fairly accurately. Empire: Total War looks like it will be another iteration of the Total War formula that will allow you to simulate the game system of the Total War franchise. Empire will probably sell circles around Histwar, but we don't really want another influx of that kind of player.

  10. The most common form of on-line play these days seems to be PBEM. Some don't like it because it is a bit slow and stately, but if you line up an opponent or two and schedule a block of about six hours when you'll all be at your computers, you can play two or three games simultaneously and there will almost always be an e-mail waiting in your in-box when you're sending a turn to someone else. (In other words, with the right partners it can be more hectic than live play). The norm, however, is that you play with something like one to six partners and send an e-mail or two a day to each.

There's a separate forum here for finding PBEM opponents, and I beleive that if you go over to the Proving Grounds you can find a way to make arrangements for an IP/TCP on-line game (I still think that's an alternate brand name for that horrible yellow English mouthwash).

  11. I suppose it might be interesting to produce a graph of activity in the skunkworks forum charted against product releases. You'd probably see a surge everytime something went in and out of Beta. The problem is the target of the output is too hypothetical to pin down, whereas our slumbering giant lends itself well to traffic analysis.

It's also possible that they're using the restricted CMC forum to dicuss the volume of activity in the public CMC forum, so the more we post, the more they post, usw....

Version 1.0 of the SC2 WaW flag mod has been posted to CMMODS.

It only works with SC2 WaW and does not work with unexpanded SC2.

A flag mod for SC2 1.08 is in the works and will probably be out later this year.

The SC2 Waw Authentic Flag mod concentrates on the 3-D flags. A temporary stop-gap measure has been put in place for the Nato 2-D icons. They will be revisited in subsequent versions of the mod. I don't particularly like the Nato icons in the large campaigns, but they look a lot more appropriate in the battles. So I'll need to give the matter some more thought, and, yes, resizing them is one possibility, though it's a lot of work.

The SC 2 Waw mod has the same file structure as the game, so all you have to do to install it (if you're too lazy to make back-ups) is unzip it to a holding folder and copy and paste "Strategic Command 2 Weapons and Warfare Expansion" to the same folder that has a folder with that same name in it (probably something like C:\Program Files\Battlefront).

But realize that this is only version 1.0 and that it is always a very good idea to make back-ups of your original.

  13. Thanks for that, John.

What I'm getting out of this is that having a flamethrowing vehicle squirt liquid fire for fifty meters is probably reasonable.

I wonder if the liquid rain at maximum range (whatever it actually was) was all that effective. The liquid rain of golden droplets reminds me a bit of standing too close to the landing zone of the discharge of a roman candle -- more unpleasant than dangerous. I wonder if that accounts for some of the discrepancies in the longer Wasp ranges (i.e. are people distinguishing maximum squirting range -- painful droplets -- from maximum effective range -- total incineration.

At times like this it would have been useful to be more interested in fire trucks as a kid.

By the way, does the game behave the same if you target as opposed to just letting the tac ai do its thing? Will the tac ai flame to 49 meters and after that use machine guns, or is it more aggressive in the hosing department?
