  1. While I am not in a position to distribute them to individual players, I too have almost all the battles and ops that were posted at the Depot and more for all three CM games. If someone is able pull together a new site with a comprehensive offering of the battles and ops for any or all of the CM games, I will be happy to share what I have on many floppy disks to make the offering more complete.

  2. It may have mattered a great deal. A delay of historical events on the eastern front by only a month would probably have given the western Allies the opportunity to take Berlin and most of Germany. Had it been the US and CW who were advancing on Berlin, the odds of a surrender and even Hitler's elimination as leader of Germany become both very possible, perhaps even likely, events.

  3. If you have played the demos of CMBB and CMAK and still find it difficult to decide which to get, go with CMBB. Years ago we had an extended discussion of the battles chosen for the CMBB demo. The botton line is that they were chosen to show off the many new game features of CMBB that CMBO did not have. The demo battles were not picked as the strongest examples of CMBB game play, which is how some of us thought the CMBB should have ben approached.

Since the game play is much better and deeper than is displayed in the CMBB demo and because CMBB covers so much ground in terms of geography, time frame, units and importance in the war, it may well be the best choice. But either way you will not lose and are likely to buy the second game in time.

  4. Yes--I have seperate installations of CMAK and ETO per the installation instructions. Each has its own folder withing my Program Files folder.

I placed the BMPs from your three most recent mods into the respective BMP files for each game (one for CMAK and one for ETO). Nothing was overwriten. The PAK 40 winter mod did not show up in ETO. It did not show up in Italy under CMAK.

I'm wondering if the BMPS you used apply to early war PAK 40 or one from a theater other than Italy. Perhaps they are not for the PAK 40 at all.

  5. David I double checked my install of the Pak 40 in ETO and no change--still no winter textures. I also installed the BMPS in my regular CMAK BMP file. Checking it in the form of a QB, I got the same result: no winter Pak 40. So it is my guess that you have got the wrong BMP numbers for the PAK 40. I haven't yet checked on the other two guns you posted.

Also I could not find #2 and #4 on CMODS--at least not in CMAK.

  6. David thanks for putting up the three new winter gun mods. However, it appears that the entire problem has not been solved.

I pulled up the German side on the battle CSDT-St. Vith. After installing your new gun mods, the following German units still appear without whitewash:

    SPOILER ALERT

    **************************************************************************************************

    1. 75 mm ATG (PAK 40)

    2. Sdkz 7

    3. SPW 251/16

    4. StuH 42

    5. Wespe (although I believe there is a frosted version)

    Any thoughts or suggestions?

  7. Sorry David--I thought that you included winter BMPS for guns. In any case, I could probably "borrow" the winter BMPs from CMAK or CMBB, if I knew what numbers they are. (If I had to go to CMBBB I would also have to know its BMP #s, if different from CMAK).

My "good problem" may come from the fact that I read and follow the installation instructions. I may have picked up a bunch of winter mods by copying over my regular CMAK BMP file (which has winter mods added) after installing the game, but before installing the ETO files. If that is the case, I need the winter PAK 40 for both games.

  8. To paraphrase John Prine: the film is what it is and it ain't what it ain't.

It is a look into the last days of the World War II in Berlin and is a character driven story of what happened and how the German leaders, especially (but not only) Hitler reacted to those events, and how the events in turn affected those people.

It is not a critcal look at German history, policies and decissions pertaining to the War and pre-war period.

Having seen the film, I do not consider it possible that any reasonable person would come away from the film with a positive view of Hitler or his Reich. Blaming the people of a country for your mistakes & ordering that they pay the full price for them, and the killing of your own children do no assist in establishing any favorable view of the historical figures of the Reich or what they stood for/did.

On the other hand it showed that, as evil as they were, even Hitler and the Nazi leaders had some good and/or human qualities (albeit obviously not enough).

What I do not understand is why so many, mostly those from Europe, appear to automatically react to any suggestion that Hitler and his hinchmen were anything but 100% evil mechanical monsters and that only bad things can be said or shown about them. Speaking as a single individual in the States, who grew up in world where everybody's dad was part of World War II, I remain confident in the people's ability to look at figures such as Hitler, Stalin and Mao, and come to their own conclusions about each of them based on what they each did. There is no reason to embellish history or restrict certain facts (e.g. Hitler loved his dog) from view.

  9. It is a pleasant surprise that it is playing in at least two theaters in Austin.

The movie is dark, intense and immersing. Do not go to see it, if you are depressed. Ganz does a great job as Hitler. The movie has few combat scenes. Instead it focuses on the people and events in and just outside Hitler's Berlin bunker in April 1945. It is most interesting that all the important characters [historical figures] were dead by the date the film was released in Germany.

  10. I haven't played CMBO for a while, but accidently blowing up nearby buildings certainly occurs in CMBB. Since the Marder is an open top AFV, blowing a building next to it can certainly cause crew casualities and/or cause the crew to bail. However, I will add that this type of event occurs more often when you are firing HE rounds.

  11. Lesson one: mods work the same in all three CM games.

Lesson two: mods only affect how things look or sound; not how they perform. For example you can mod a Tiger tank to look like a firetruck, but it will still function as a Tiger tank.

Lesson three: none of the games come from Battlefront with winter mods of the units (e.g. vehicles, infantry and guns). Therefore, you should start with these types of winter mods because you will not overwrite any of the original files.

Lesson four: all visual mods are placed in the BMP folder of the game that you are modding and all sound mods are placed in the wav folder, unless you have downloaded and installed a mod-manager. Which leads to...

Lesson five: get a mod manager. If all you play is CMBO, CMMOS is a good choice. Otherwise the clear choice is the McMMM mod manager.

Lesson six: the mecca for obtaining mods for any of the CM games is: http://www.cmmods.com

Lesson seven: back up your files before applying mods. In fact it is a good idea to back-up your entire BMP and WAV folders for each of the CM games you are modding.

Lesson eight: for CMBO only there are low-res and hi-res mods. The hi-res mods are almost always better. For the latter two games there are only hi-res visuals (by CMBO standards). The off the shelf CMBO se version already has many upgraded visuals from the original release of CMBO.
