  1. Grunts generally means enlisted men. In the game context it usually means squads, guns and teams, not lower level leaders (e.g. platoon HQs).

There is no cumulative effect of more than one leader being within command range. Lower level leaders do not benefit from having higher level commanders within command range.

In fact too many leaders within an area can be a problem, especially with regard to commanding mortars for indirect fire, but also because the command bonus (package) you want for a particular unit may be "intercepted" by a less desirable leader unit, which is also in close proximity.

  2. At least with regard to all the CM games, isn't this idea just a bit more than a day late and a dollar short?

CMMODS and PG/SD2 do a great job and have years of archived material. They also have a very long and established track records--all very positive. If Battlefront wants to belatedly help these free marketers of its games and a great benefit to its gaming community, throw them some of the bucks you plan to put into this apparently redundant and unnecessarily duplicative plan.

  3. From today's bog entry:

    "Progress this week!

Combat Mission Campaigns is making progress! A power session between Charles, Rob (main CMC programmer) and Bruce (CMC mastermind) last week has allowed the team to squish half a dozen critical bugs in the interaction between the strategic (CMC) and tactical (CMBB) layers. This allows the team to make a major leap towards the next large and more stable beta release. Keep your eyes and ears open, because we're going to make a public call for beta testers once the time comes."

I know--I was born in St. Louis. East St. Louis was the hot after hours party spot when my parents were dating at the beginning of the 1950's. However, about 10 years ago even the feds were moving their offices out of ESL because of the danger to employees.
  5. There have been reports all over the map with regard to which of the CM x 1 games will or will not run with VISTA. Perhaps it is more than just the operating system alone that determines that issue for a particular computer.

One thing seems clear, at least at this point in time. That is: CMBB is the most difficult of the three to run with VISTA.

  6. There is no one way to divide forces. How you do it will depend on the number of players and the particular forces in the game.

We have made one of our players the AFV commander and assigned others "x" number of infantry companies plus support troops.

On another occasion we divided the game map into sectors and assigned each player to a part of the map. The number and type of forces each received depended on his map and tactical assignments for the game.

  7. At KG we play many multi-player games. We sometimes play 2 vs. 2, but often the teams on each side include at least three players.

The only contest I know that involves forces from more than one country per side is an in-house custom series of battles (a home made true campaign) that were are currently playing. In addition to the various components of the Soviets and German, we have Romanians (on each side)and Hungarians.

But we have also played the following battles in MP with good results. Both are from Boots & Tracks.

    1. Ponyri Express

    2. Our Backs to the Volga

  8. TH--PBEM helper was not a factor.

We were playing a CMBB MP game/campaign stretching over three playable maps (4 on the Allied side and 3 on the Axis side), with the game designer looking over it all as referee. All players were KG members, so there was no cheating involved.

In the next game the referee gave the Allies back their losses which were attributable to the extra bombing runs.
