  1. I would like to start off saying I loved CM WW2 games. I felt they were the best and the most historically accurate. AI tactics were good and sometimes great, especially on CM Overlord. I felt a real need to understand tactics in order to play effective in either singleplayer or multpilayer.

In 2007 I was really looking forward to Battlefronts new CMx2 engine for the upcoming CMSF. Of course when I got the game it was impossible to play. I was running vista at the time and when I did play it was choppy. Now I have a computer that will run it so I installed it again and downloaded all the patches. I was finally going to Shockforce...

I have been playing for about a week, mostly scenarios and a little bit of the campaign and I hate to say that I'm not happy with the game. Even on elite the game is somewhat easy. Playing blue has an incredible advantage and not to mention the enemy AI makes weird decisions or no decisions at all. Most of the time I can just lay a target to waste before I enter a building or a zone. I might suffer a couple of casualties but ultimately I will achieve my mission and clear all my objective. Sometimes my objectives will have already been achieved before I'm halfway there! I'm sure multilayer will have a different effect and would be more challenging but I would think I should find some enjoyment in single player.

I'm writing this thread to see if anybody else feels the same way. I noticed there are not to many complaints in the forum. Maybe I'm being to critical? I really want to enjoy this game but I find it hard to. Maybe I should look into multiplayer instead? I'm not trying to be negative at all. The battlefront team in my opinion I have made great games over the years and I wish them success for the years to come.

Looking forward to reading any comments.

Sir, you have hit the nail on the head! The game is simply not fun! CMX1 is a much better series and CMX2 is striving to attain the same level of worthiness.

Now you must be prepared for the CMSF beta tester backlash! INCOMING!!!!!!

    :P

  2. Ah, yes -- thanks for the clarification, John. =)

Countless times in watching TV documentaries I've seen where the narrator is talking about a certain vehicle (or gun or plane or whatever) and the stock footage clearly shows a different vehicle than the one the narrator is talking about.

Perhaps the studios are too busy churning out these shows (some of which are better than others) to do much fact-checking, especially when it comes to using stock footage to provide something for the audience to look at other than bespectacled talking heads. *shrug* Also, more and more the editors of these historicomilitary documentaries are going for almost MTV-like cuts, even while a historian or scholar is on the screen -- shoulder-mounted cameras, axial panning, apparent encouragement for talking heads to emote more....

    Sad, but true! :(

Has anyone seen the air combat show on HDNet(?) channel? I can't recall the exact name, but it appears to be very similar to the "Dogfights" show from THC but with more details of the aircraft.

I caught a bit of one episode detailing WWII combat between the Japanese fighters and American fighters (probably Zeros and F4Fs?). The show cuts between computer graphics of the dogfight and, check this, the narrator flying in a plane at 5,000ft describing the battle. Odd thing was the narrators voice is transmitted over his microphone while he is flying so it is hard to understand half of what he says due to the background noise of the airplane engine (ymmv, imho)! haha

  3. Hi,

Can anyone tell me why this is?

The toys and tactics that go with them. Most enjoy high-intensity warfare between mechanised opponents. They enjoy the Panzers, Shermans and all that goes with them. Tactically such wars are more interesting than jungle warfare. For most.

Of courser the Eastern Front… no Yanks at all there… is where the real war was decided.

76% of Germans military casualties were suffered in the East… D-Day to the end of the war in the West accounted for just 14% of German military casualties. Including those accounted for by fighting the Brits from D-Day onwards.

    All interesting stuff,

    All the best,

    Kip.

    wow! interesting stat!

  4. It will be done when it will be done. Frankly I am glad they took the time to get CMSF in working order first before they zipped along onto making modules for it. I've long ago realized that most games that are truly worth your time will never be on time.

I mean come on, when was the last time you saw Blizzard release a game ANYWHERE NEAR their touted release date?

Yeah, but don't forget that CMSF was a frakkin' mess when released! But I think that was due to BF making a bad contract with the distributor/publisher(?) and being forced to release the game early. Hopefully, BF has wisened up a bit for CMN and I hope they don't get caught 'with their pants down' so to speak!

  5. Yes I did check all online resources. I didn't check stores as that would be pure chance that they had one (the games are over 10 years old).

I was actually looking for some info from Battlefront on the status of this abandonware.

I managed to locate a copy anyway but was also hoping to see if there had been any more recent games that fall into the category. Turn based strategy has really fallen into no-man's land.

bummer about not finding a copy. As I mentioned above you shoudl contact Chris(?) at the NWS wargame site above and tell him what you are looking for these days. He gets lots of game in trade for credit and he can contact you if he gets a copy of either game.

Maybe we can bug GOG.com to see if they can get the titles for their store. They have old games that are checked to work on XP and Vista and the games have no DRMs. Good prices, too.

in fact...I see they have a new Ubisoft catalog at GOG.com...they know have IL-2: 1946 for $10USD. And it says that Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six are coming soon. I never played GR or RS, are they worth getting for $5-$10USD?

  6. Have you tried The Google?

    Have you checked Ebay?

Have you checked for online game stores that sell used PC games? Check out NWS Online combat game store - they carry new and used PC games.

If you don't see what you want send them an email and they will try to get you a copy (or send you an email if they acquire a copy).

Have you checked local game stores? I haven't been to one ages, but last time I visited a Gamestop-type store they had 95-99% Console games in stock.

    good luck!

    :)

  7. Hey guys i just found a super RTS game that is called "Men of War", its like company of heroes, but much slower, tactical and far more realistic. (its stuck somewhere between COH and TOW)

Since im not much into clickfests the slower tempo and the "smarter player wins" style suits me perfectly.

Check out some videos on youtube and play the demo.

Sounds interesting because I have low "twitch-factor."

Thanks for the info. i just saw the positive review of MoW at IGN. It seems to be getting good reviews from critics and fans.

  8. If Battlefront were ever approached by the military to give them a training tool, then I think coop play would be necessary. If that did happen, BFC would also be getting a nice chunk of change to be able to do so. Since they just have Charles (who is outstanding I must say), I don't see coop play ever really making it in. Those precious months are needed for other things. :[

I thought that was one of the (now failed) goals/reasons for making CMSF?

  9. Yeah, I recall playing Age of EmpiresII/Age of Kings cooperatively (2 or more players playing 1 civ) with my friend, and using rogerwilco for voicecomms, against the AI and/or against other humans. Great fun!! And it was easy to see how this division of labor really upped the level of play and increased the effectiveness of our civ in harvesting resources and fighting!

Man, were we really doing this coop play back in the year 1998?! Wow, over 10 years ago...how time flies!!

    :)

  10. We don't get to approve pricing because it doesn't work that way. As much as we don't like that, we do agree it's not practical for anybody to control the price other than the retailer. HOWEVER, it is illegal in many countries to sell a product below cost. It's a complicated situation and generally speaking nobody gets busted for it. "Dumping" is the common term for the practice and it usually takes something HUGE to get government regulators involved. The only recourse we have is if we find someone "dumping" we can shut them off from getting more product. Even that's pretty tough to do, especially as a product ages nobody but us has an incentive to keep the price higher.

    Steve

ahhh. gotcha! Thanks for the info. yeah, it does sound complicated if you have a publishers, distributors, and sellers all having different ideas of what price they want to charge for you games!

  11. Good review.

I have to agree with teh summation:

"In the end it really boils down to that old stereotype that most expansions are only to be recommended if you enjoyed the original. The new units are interesting and fun to play with, the new campaign offers a lot of challenge, and the single mission scenarios are mostly well done and worthy of some time. There are however no real new gameplay elements added. Though I would normally not recommend a game based on the mods and user made scenarios I do have to mention them in this instance. There are scores of missions and even fully fledged campaigns made by users that rival and sometimes even put the ones that Battlefront’s provided to shame. While I’m still waiting for that elusive holy grail of a truly worthy AI opponent this will certainly keep me occupied for quite some time to come."

  12. I love this vague statement :). What were your sales expectations? 1000 copies? 10000? I assume you have your reasons to keep sales numbers secret, and I also assume I don't need to understand the reasons ... ;)

    haha

Then there was that comment, when CMBO was on sale for $1.99USD at GoGamer before Christmas 2008, to the effect of, "Hmmm, we will have to check into this because our company did not approve this price/sale." I asked if BF gets to approve all sales, pricing, etc., but I did not receive a response.

  13. He didn't say that BFC can only do WWII well, but he was disappointed in Syria as the setting, said the game lacks the charm of the CMx1 games (all set in WWII), and he said he wants panzers. From that I infer he would prefer a WWII setting. But he doesn't elaborate. I also want WWII, but I wouldn't knock CMSF because it isn't WWII.

well said! I think most of the folks here are a bit sensitive to any (perceived or actual) negative CMSF comments.

The reviewer gave a thumbs up the game (8/10) and they are not happy! go figure.
