  1. Playstation3 - Has its own fps coming - MAG or Massive Action Game will allow for online battles consisting of up to 256 players at once. : )

wow! 256 players? I will have to bing MAG and check it out (please please please please be a realistic shooter).

Oh, iirc, isn't ArmA2 to be released for Xbox360 and PS3? That might save me a bit of cash by not having to get a new PC.

  2. I copied the figures - but should have guessed that nautical miles was inappropriate : )

I was wondering how fast a Tiger would go with that kind of engine [and an improved transmission]

    haha

i initially read nm to be nanometers (10^-9 meters)! haha

    new mexico

    crazy looking car!

    :)

  3. It's true that animations cannot be uninterrupted, however, you can now move while reloading, using binoculars, etc. Therefore if you are caught in a bad position reloading, you can still move to cover. The only action that makes you immobile is changing weapons. Kind of annoying but I can live with it.

I agree but given the open world nature of ArmA2, sadly we won't see it. No doubt we'll see some improvement in AI smarts in future patches.

This is good news about being able to move whilst reloading and and using binocs! That is a step up from ArmA where you had no control of your character during the reloading animation.

I would have been happy with ArmA2 if I found my character under fire during the reload animation I could cancel my reload (set it back to starting to avoid cheating) in order to move.

OT, is moving while reloading realistic? I mean is moving while reloading practiced in modern armed forces?

  4. I posted a preview of the new OFP awhile back. For those that missed it, here it is again.

This was great to hear and a fear we all have.

There's certainly room for both of these games, at least to keep BI on their toes. A good thing for us customers/fans.

Thanks for the link! I haven't seen this preview of OFP.

So, they still have the uninterpretable reload animation?! argh!! iirc, a lot of people have complained about this problem in ArmA - you think you are in cover and start to reload to find out a millisecond later that an previously hidden enemy soldier on your exposed flank starts taking shots at you. You cannot interrupt the reload animation and crawl to safety! haha folks have asked for an option to interrupt the reload animation so you could at least attempt to crawl to safety.

  5. Yeah I have no idea... I see enemy soldiers standing in the open nearly 100% of the time... like, that's pretty much where they are when I shoot them. :)

Sounds like the same AI used in ARMA. If shot at the enemy soldier will drop to the ground, but he won't bother moving 1 foot to get behind cover! go figure! haha

  6. Adam, I don't have the demo, no clue what scenarios they included. But in the retail, there's at least one mission ("Trial by Fire") which has you assaulting a village with 6 squadmates (AI Group Commander) and they will all nicely take cover and move in leaps & overwatch. I've been killed by enemy AI laying prone next to a fence and bending their upper body around the fence post so only their head is visible.

They even seem to use cover not immediatly in their front, for example a wall blocking LOS 6 meter in front of them, they will move up a slope just far enough to peek over that wall. The system is not restricted to hugging corners or trees.

I don't know why you are not seeing this. One thing I noticed however is that you as commander should not try to micromanage them as in A1. For example, trying to send them into individual positions on corners makes them stupid. Best I found was to leave them in formation and just move ahead myself, or to use the "Advance" command so they can pick their own paths.

The biggest notable difference for me is that enemy AI is not standing in the open anymore. I created a few quick editor missions with an enemy squad given a "Combat" behaviour waypoint in a village, and whenever I assault that village, I have to look hard for them. In A1, they would be standing in perfect wedge formation exactly on top of the waypoint, in A2 the AI scatters and hides, with just enough head showing to nail you. That improvement alone makes a massive difference for the way you as commander have to plan your assaults.

Could it be that the AI is not working as well in the demo as in the full version?

  7. Armed Assault 2's demo is out now. It's a really good demo because it includes a functioning editor.

Unfortunately as far as I can tell it is exactly the same game as the first one, but it has better graphics and sound. :( I'm not sure the core game has been changed much beyond the ability to hop fences. Most buildings you can't even enter, vehicles still spin, there is no change to ground cover/no addition of foxholes, etc... I don't see any significant changes.

my comp is so old it won't even run the demo.

At the least I hope they increased the ability of AI to use cover and turned down their uber-hearing and uber-shooting ability through smoke and vegetation.

  8. We already do that. The problem is retroactive however. The message about download limitations used to be much less obvious before our switch to our new (current) store software. Mat, the guy who started this post, bought his game before that switch. (Funny enough, the download limits used to be much more strict before Oct 2007 than they are now :-)) So what we're seeing is some confusion due to the transition. Going forward this should be a rare problem, because the customer is exposed to that warning at least twice during the purchase.

    That is good to hear!

    :)

I will use the digital download for CMN when it is released for Christmas (yes?? please?? :)).

  9. I'm still baffled why this is an issue. Why should someone assume that they can redownload as many times as they want forever and ever and ever? You're buying a license and the digital content to run it. You're not buying a backup service. When you buy something from a store can you go back to the store to get a new one if you lose it? Not likely :D

I think this is just another example of people thinking "digital = free" and that somehow it is different than physical goods. Conceptually there is no difference. Yes, there is a practical difference and that is why you can redownload for up to a year while someone losing a CD the day after they get it is going to have to pay for a replacement. But I don't see any rational argument why it should be "forever". Downloads do cost us something even if they don't appear to cost you guys something.

As for paying per download... our original download service did indeed charge us per download. At the time we didn't have the IT infrastructure to handle hosting downloads. Now we do, after a significant and ongoing investment. So while we no longer literally pay out of pocket for each download, we do pay something for the service which is in turn based on the total volume of activity.

eLicense codes... now there is something we pay for each one handed out. Fortunately we have a LOT of control over these and that means we can do things like retrieve, reset, or even kill off licenses directly. The latter is what we do when someone, like Mat, needs a new copy since the new copy comes with its own key (no way to avoid that). Kill off the old, enable the new, all set ;)

    Steve

The analogy of the store is weak! Surely you can do better. Though I do agree that it is not a game companies job to allow unlimited downloads. If a person want unlimited downloads go buy games off STEAM or Gamersgate.

I haven't looked at your download page (I'm a luddite and I still buy CDs/DVDs! haha) but maybe you should update it with big warning signs telling folks then can only download game for one year and they are strongly encouraged to make a backup of the game.

    keep up the good work

  10. The last one I had made back in 2003 I had Monarch Computer Systems build it. At that time, you couldn't buy the components from newegg, put it together, and save more than $40. That was the second build out they did for me and my experience with them was they had top notch customer service.

Got to looking around 6+ years later, find that Monarch apparently jumped the shark with their customer service and has been out of business for several years.

Who out there nowadays puts together top component / bottom dollar boxes?

    TiA

Yeah, I have heard good things from cyberpower and ibuypower on custom rigs for good prices.

Please tell us about your experience with your new rig. My old Alienware is almost 7 years old and I'm looking at getting a new rig in summer 2010.
