  1. An interesting article though the tests may be somewhat limited in establishing what "intelligence" is that they are modelling.
  2. Thank you JonS, you so rarely compliment other posters. Sometimes I think people find your replies a tad brusque and perhaps it is a lesson to us all that you don't have to agree with a guy but still be can positive on the contributions people make.
  3. Baneman JonS Knowing from which direction fire is coming from does not a firefight make. So your information on range error is helpful it is not the relevant to the point made by Banemen that you quoted. PS Baneman's post:
  4. I have not spent a lot of time wondering about the HMG's so my view is unformed currently. The problem is we actually have RealLife and the game mechanics and HMG's in combat don't get much of a mention in the military books I have so I am not in any position to make a call. I did have the feeling though that, on my slight acquaintance with the game, HMG's were not overly lethal and low firing rate may be the problem. I can juggle with thoughts whether the game AI recognises it should up the tempo of fire when your attack is going in but I have not carried out any tests. Its Just a idle thought of mine. : )
  5. I would bother to gain the data for you if I knew something might be done with it. If you are saying - indirectly - there is no change in spotting in Version 2 the testing on this version would be worth doing. If there is a tweak in Version 2 than any testing now by any number of players wuld be a complete waste of energy. I realise that BF have no costs involved in the testing but perhaps some sort of confirmation would be helpful in this matter.
  6. http://www.lonesentry.com/articles/intelligence-report/use-of-mg42.html Wikipedia Also from Wikipedia on the Vickers HMG and notice the 250 limit for continuous fire but in this case not due to damaging the gun.
  7. Apparently NBC has problems with presenting stuff live and pretends its live even when its actually 6 hours later. Seems a bit dishonest! And according to NBC reporter the bike racing when through the Surrey countryside past chateaux?! Does chateaux have a special meaning in Merican or simply a term for large houses somewhere in Europe? However criticising NBC on Twitter is a bad thing: Nice one Twitter.
  8. I have other things I can enjoy like table-tennis, going out, reading, stocks & shares, and playing boardgames so my return on my $100 is pretty bad currently. You sell me a realistic game that isn't then I am going to be more wary about giving you more money when you claim it is now sorted. If I played only against the AI it is not a big deal but if I am playing a human and the results hinge on strange spotting for armour and ludicrous hits on firing whilst moving I get peeved. Now I am really glad that there are many people who are enjoying the game for what it is currently. I and two friends who all bought it togther when it came out - I reckon neither of the other two bother looking in here and between the two of us who play its probaly avearging a few hours per month. So for us anyway its been a bust so far - pray to God it is improved with V2.
  9. I am waiting on reports of play after V2 to see if they have nailed the most obvious problems before I spend money [$10] or bother with more tests.
  10. Thansk for the pics. What were the ranges involved being an interesting point ? And how many shots to nail the second? When I was taking it seriously I actually was testing to see if looking into the sun had any effect .... not that I take realism claims seriously you understand! : )
  11. I understood in happier times Finnish women went to the Canaries for winter "sports". : ) But they sound fun:
  12. Somewhere I have read the comment of a US tanker about the much better resolution of the German optics and how he was able to pick up details that could not be seen with the US binos. He gave a specific instance of an ATG AFAIR. Useful stuff if not comparative data. http://home.europa.com/~telscope/milusarm.txt
  13. I have a friend who has this game. We have not played it ...yet.Though I have a feeling the beta-testers did not do a good job. Or possibly they did but it was published half-cock for reasons of cashflow. From Wikipedia From BoardGameGeek
  14. From my experiments with spotting under V1.01 it was highly variable with differences of minutes in spotting time. And in the worst case in fire lanes a Sherman refused to notice an enemy tank at 1800 metres who bounced three shots off the glacis. I am not bothering to test anymore as V2 will presumably alter numerous items discovered by players in the last 13 months since CMBN was launched. Incidentally does anyone know if the superior German binoculars are modelled in game? Certainly Allied troops rated them very much higher than the normal issue.
  15. This made me laugh plenty, though the share price is pretty funny too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sThcwmx3rs
  16. HMG and smoke. I had heard that if you target light before the smoke arrives the HMG continues to fire but you cannot fire through smoke once it is in existence. I have not tested this myself and I suspect this was under V 1.01
  17. Great stuff BigDork. Very atmospheric. Parking a MkIV so it cannot easily reverse ...ouch! And IMO MkIV's mainly lose to Shermans so discretion is necessary. Ian.Leslie quotes are from June 2011 and there have been two patches since then so hopefully Ver 2 will nail it. I am assuming BD is using V 1.10!
  18. dpa may have just the trace of truth in the medias increasing efforts in finding stories and creating heroes. I suspect the 1948 version would have listed the contestants by nmae and country and the film reel recorded andplayed back the action. But of course they were very unsophisticated then and did not have the sports agent or rely on sponsorship etc to fund them during the year and for some , a very few, provide a lucrative career. So the media now has access to plenty of short human interest stories that can be packaged and resolved over a few weeks. And this helps fill screen time !! In some countries there are no TV adverts to fill : ) I may be alone in feeling that the Olympics in a lot of sports has become a place where professional athletes get plenty of exposure for doing what they do as a trade and the amateurs who do sport for fun have been pushed out. My only hope is that perhaps the media could get excited about brain activities in the same way! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Mathematical_Olympiad I have seen one program about it and it was full of human interest!
  19. Save money by giving up smoking? : ) [kidding]
  20. On a lighter note but not a lot ... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-18983010?print=true And for non-US citizens http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Reserve_Transparency_Act http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Reserve_Transparency_Act
  21. I suspect standing in a street in RL was more dangerous than being inside because of the chances of mortar bomb blast or ricochetting bullets being channelled by buildings. And snipers would be less of a problem : ) Of course if large shells are coming through the roof going for a cellar makes sense as it should detonate before reaching that far. For an isolated building being behind close to or many metres away may well be sensible dependent on where the other fire positions are. Lobbing a rifle grenade through when the enemy occupies it would be efficient if the building is not too large. So ignoring the tactical set-up there might be some mileage in working out when size of building adds sufficient value in terms of protection. No doubt someone will already have done some research into this!
  22. For Pete's sake I don't give a monkey for what people espose on other forums/sites lets just stick to WW2 and give up on personal attacks. As it is JK will be made immortal as a dictionary entry which is a pretty dumb way of ignoring something! As for the MA Deuce I did post that interesting Canadian research of various arms penetrating power http://www.claybrick.ca/pdf/cmri_bulletproof_project.pdf http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyndall_stone And I doubt very much that a limestone is a particularly hard or cohesive rock compared to granite and others.
  23. You personally don't have to agree with everyones posts on the forum and if BF wish someone to police it I am sure they can arrange it themselves. In the meantime I accept the dross with the glimmers of gold that appear on these forums. The day I start hounding/insulting any poster I hope I will realise that I am overstepping the mark of reasonable behaviour.
