  1. If this is true, why wouldn't zooks and schrecks receive the same inspiration? I mean, the HQ isn't holding and firing his squaddies' rifles himself, so he never directly influences the physical actions of those his bonus affects anyway. I sure would like to know the definite answer to this.
  2. Did a search using numerous terms, couldn't find anything. Does the schreck, zook, etc to-hit percentage that is displayed during the orders phase take into account any HQ combat bonus nearby? Or is this a raw percentage just based on the other factors? If it is a raw percentage, how much does the combat bonus increase it? That is, what is the multiplier for +1 combat skill and what is it for +2 combat skill?
  3. I remember Paydirt fondly, but I was pretty young at the time. "Medium pass" was my mantra, as I was a Raiders fan and it worked well against my friends. Great box cover, IIRC, very gritty. How about XOR's "NFL Challenge"? Anyone, anyone? The first real-time display of the action on a PC I think...now that I think about it, kinda like CM. You called the play but could only watch the action unfold, your little x and o players zigging and zagging about the field. Too many turnovers, though.
  4. Oh jeez, that mottled guy in the front is gorgeous!
  5. Actually, it will read: TIGER or PANZERTRUPPEN or DD, please make us a ... These are the heroes that have filled my bmp folder with environmental goodness.
  6. Thanks to Tiger, this request has been fulfilled! Check it: http://www.battlefront.com/discuss/Forum1/HTML/015008.html
  7. Hey that's real nice work, man. Thanks for your selfless efforts -- and such responsiveness!!! And hey, sorry about not tipping the public hat to you, too. I have a bunch of your stuff already installed, honest! Next time my plea will read: TIGER or PANZERTRUPPEN, please make us a ...
  8. I was never one to criticize the original artwork much, but after applying mod after wonderful mod over the past several months, I have higher expectations. Apologies in advance to whoever created it, but the standard building rubble texture is crude and ugly, and more importantly, looks starkly out of place on my lovely battlefields. I now openly plead for a high-res replacement from whomever can do it right. I wanted to publicly give the nod of confidence to Panzertruppen because of his wonderful prior building work.
  9. I would avoid the simulation category and focus on the strategy and Game Of The Year categories, folks. Gamespot/Computer Gaming World has a fairly narrow definition of simulation, and it seems to be limited to the simulation of a single piece of equipment...plane, tank, etc. So there's no way CM will get enough votes in that category from the general public (to add to ours) to make it into final reporting.
  10. A while back I saw a great smilie used in a post, it was an aggravated head banging on another head with a mallet. But I forget which topic it was in and it's not documented in the smilies legend. Anyone know how to do this? I think it would be a great substitute for some of the nasty insult-slinging that goes on around here. Comic relief, sort of like Beetle Bailey and the Sarge.
  11. Thanks, Dan and Warmaker, I forgot that I'm supposed to search on this stuff before I get carried away with a new topic! Doh!!
  12. After watching five hours of recent History Channel footage on WWII, I think I saw about seven seconds of footage of black Americans, and they were just debarking from a huge ship. Was it was true that they grouped black soldiers together into their own units, or enforced some kind of racial separation? If so, was their duty similar to other units (i.e. varied dependent on location, skill, and experience) or did they tend to have more specific roles assigned to them?
  13. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Kanonier Reichmann: What I wanna know is how you managed to get Fionn to agree to the "challenge"- a term I use loosely I may add. BTW, it is a genuine question. Regards Jim R.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> I approached him politely and respectfully, with the clear understanding that my goal was to learn.
  14. Thanks for the suggestions, Chupacabra. But no need for assumptions about my opponent. It's Fionn. What now, brown cow? What kind of specific advice do I need?
  15. You people have brazenly succeeded in establishing a new faucet for cess! I can't believe the moderators have not seen through this ridiculous veil!! Okay, so anyhoo, I have a question. I am about to play a notoriously tough opponent and he has given me free reign on map generation before I purchase. I have 3000 pts, using short-75 rules, it's a meeting engagement, and I'm Americans. So considering I will be outclassed tactically and experientially, what purchasing/map strategy combo would give me the best chance? A plan that's simple to execute...
  16. I don't think it is ever acceptable to bail out without notice, M. Bates. Even if your opponent is acting unreasonably, you owe them a "sorry, it's not working out, i'm moving on" email. And as far as computer/software/ISP problems go, you cannot convince me that in this day and age, that there is a single CM PBEMer without alternate access to the internet. I'm talking about machines at work, friends or relatives you could ask to send something for you, a cyber cafe, or if all else fails, the public library. So unless you're the out in the middle of nowhere in your Unabomber cabin running off of a generator and satellite dish, there's no excuse for dropping out short of hospitalization. And if you are out there in the middle of nowhere, maybe you should make your opponent aware of this before you begin a game. I say START THE LIST!
  17. Combat Mission was actually nominated for two categories in their official awards, complete with boxshot and description: Best Game That No One Played (went to Allegiance, a space combat simulation...wheeee!) and Best Strategy Game (went to Shogun). But they are now taking reader votes, and you can vote for CM in both the strategy and Game Of The Year categories.
  18. Fionn currently has 3555 on this iteration of the BBS. What's really impressive, however, is Madmatt's count, as he only recently became a BTS employee. So most of those were "non-moderator" status posts. I say he gets the nod.
  19. There's a potential solution to all this. Someone with a CM web site could start a deadbeat list (it would not be a good idea here at the forum...too much contention and flaming would result, methinks). The idea is that if someone dumps you midgame without explanation or courtesy, you report them to the deadbeat list. The maintainer of the list keeps these first-time offender names offline. Then if someone else reports that same person, then they go onto the public list of potential deadbeats. No slander or other legal wierdness, just "these people might be risks for quitting based on submitted reports". Then when you make a new gaming contact, you just browse over to the list and see if they are on it, and make your decision so much the wiser. Sure there are ways to abuse/circumvent this kind of list, but it seems like a reasonable thing to try.
  20. This is becoming a hot issue again and I would REALLY like to hear an official line from Steve or Charles as to whether or not an honest-to-god stop on contact order is under consideration for infantry. I'm sure there is a fair amount of coding and tweaking that would need to be done to implement this, and I'm sure this addition could break all kinds of other stuff, requiring another round of testing. But for those of us looking for this order (including me), give us a sign, BTS! Should we just live with the current situation and move on, or is this a possibility before CM2?
  21. Dear Big Time Software, I wish you hadn't conceived of the most brilliant mix of real-time and turn-based play to date, laying all other strategy games to shame. I wish you hadn't worked so hard and long on a risky project, putting independent developers back on the map. I wish you hadn't released a playable demo, forcing a blind clutch for my credit card as I gazed slack-jawed at the screen. I wish you hadn't completed your masterpiece, launching my new love affair. I wish you hadn't sent me my CD, which, when placed inside my computer, immediately required new locks for the study door and an eMachine for the wife and kids. I wish you hadn't made the game installable, because now that it is, it sucks more of my free time than I would admit to any relative. I wish you hadn't made the game spawnable, inspiring trips to friends' houses to admit to them EXACTLY how much of my free time it sucks. I wish you hadn't made it TCPable, leaving my no option than to double my playing time (Ed. note: this adds up to well over 100% of said free time, he never was very good at math) I wish you hadn't made the texture format open, creating opportunities to discover some of the best fan artwork on the net. I wish you hadn't created the forum, facilitating international friendships and lively debate and, oh yeah, making the rest of my time disappear (Ed. note: this was in negative balance already) I wish you hadn't supported the players with frequent fixes and enhancements, bringing all my votes for other products for Game Of The Year to a grand total of zero. I wish you hadn't made the units and tactics so true to life, sparking new interest in WW history and the brave men who have defended freedom with their lives, the research on which consumes the very last bits of my time (Ed. note: whatever, he doesn't even own a watch) I wish you hadn't installed a knowledgeable and dedicated support team, contact with whom and quick resolution of problems by whom has given me "teh feelgood sensatian of teh year!!!" ©JeffK And finally, I wish you hadn't dangled CM sequels tauntingly in front of me, necessitating the blocking out of large chunks of pages in my new appointment book. Like, all of 2002 and 2003. But since you have already done all of these things, THANK YOU VERY MUCH! Happy Holidays! -A satisfied customer [This message has been edited by Binkie (edited 12-22-2000).]
  22. Sheer brilliance, Wesreidau!! That's the way to get your topic hopping, by incorporating football into your post on such an international forum. Wish I had thought of it! Seriously though, I'd like to ask all the Dutch fans out there how they feel about losing a place in the finals of the two biggest tournaments in the world on botched penalty kicks. How many hours per day should they practice this before WC 2002? Hehe, bring back the Clockwork Orange, I say! Then they won't need to go to penalties.
  23. Sweetness...will there be a repost of the fixed v23 soon then?
