  1. When planning an attack, I often use HQ and FO and sharpshooters (and mortars out of ammo) as spotters, since they have binoculars and are of no particular value in an assault. Generally, I plan for these units to identify enemy MG and mortar positions.

My question is this. Suppose I have an HQ unit with LOS over area X. Will the allocation of additional units (with binoculars) that have LOS over area X increase the chances of spotting enemy positions or is there no multiplier in effect?

Another question ... is the spotting capability of all units with binoculars equal or does it vary based on type such as HQ, FO, sharpshooters, mortars, and MGs?

A final question ... do command bonuses or skill level effect spotting capabilities?

    Thanks.

  2. I took it for granted having played CMBO for a couple of years that vehicles cannot cross fords. Well, they can't in CMBO, but they can CMBB. (even checked this in the map editor) I was really surprised to find Soviet armor flanking my position by crossing a river.

    What a shock!

    Why the change?

(I don't recall this being listed in the manual under changes.)

  3. I have to advance up a long map about 2.7Km.

I have an AFV force which includes HT and infantry.

I will have to clear various wooded areas to check for ATRs and gun emplacements with flanking shots to a road that travels down the center of the map.

What is the best way to use my HT/infantry to clear the woods?

Should I advance the HTs to the tree line and disembark my infantry there?

Or should I advance the HTs to 200m from the tree line and disembark my infantry there covering the open ground on foot?

The former would seem to give better protection to my infantry from small arms fire, but less supporting fire from the HTs.

The latter would seem to give my HTs a better chance to survive from close range AT weapons and better FOV for providing supporting fire for the infantry as they enter the woods.

    Recommendations?

    Thanks.

  4. I don't think it was big arty either. I mean what is the chance of a barrage with only two rounds landing simultaneously dead center on my two adjacent buildings.

Here is something interesting. Between the two buildings prior to the their collapse, there was one of those "Achtung Minen!" signs that the auto club puts up. Well, it wasn't there afterwards. Could my buildings have been built on a mine field?

  5. I was playing a scenario when two small light buildings just blew up!

I didn't see that they were taking and fire (like direct HE) and I didn't see and demo charges being thrown. They just blew up simultaneously with no prior damaged. It looked like they had been primed and blown on command. Didn't do my two squads very much good who had just advanced into them. :(

I didn't read about such capabilities in the game manual.

    Thanks.

  6. I just finished a scenario as the Soviets attacking a German town at night and snowing (visibility 35-40 meters).

I came upon some trenches while advancing through scattered trees. So, I brought up a KV-IS and put some area fire (MG) on the trenches. My troops (regulars) who were about 20-30 meters away at the time all got shakened and panicked. As far as I could tell, they weren't taking any fire. So, I replayed the turn without the area fire and my troops were fine.

So, besides having to worry about friendly fire incidents at night, you must also be concerned about your troops being very skittish about nearby weapons fire?

    Thanks.

  8. I have the list of retail scenarios. I started trying to download them from the Scenario Depot.

    However,

    (1) The Der Kessel scenarios are no longer available.

    (2) It's a pain having to download them one at a time and then unzip.

Would someone zip the new retail scenarios into one file and email it to me?

    Thanks.

  9. I have played about six battles so far.

I was just curious if others agree with this perception?

In CMBO, the percentage victory display for both sides seems to be a much better indicator of who the actual victor will be at the end of the scenario than in CMBB. Variable number of turns aside, I find that you can get to the end thinking you have the flags and find out that you don't have them when the AAR comes up. The last game I played, the numbers were all saying a draw, and then, a cease fire was enforced on both sides and I found out that I had a major victory. Much to my surprise!

Another thing I noticed is different is that once CMBB shows who has the flag in a turn, it stays that way even though you rewind the movie.

In short, it seems to me that in CMBB, you should just fight hard and not pay too much attention to the victory percentages.
