I thought I had read in some post about "byte battles" very small scenarios (map, forces, and time frame) that could easily be played in one sitting. What site is hosting this particular collection of downloads?
Thanks.

Yes, maybe that was it. I do flip from the desktop to CM and back quite a bit.

I am playing a PBEM as the Americans and all of a sudden I have noticed some German rifle squads with one man holding a white placard. (Seriously, I am not joking.) Are the Germans trying to tell me something?
Thanks.

You could use something like Game Commander (voice commands) to issue all non-mouse commands. It would reduce typing.

Well, thanks for the suggestion. Too bad the utility didn't seem to work for me. Just kept making a beep rather than filling the dialogue box.
Oh, well ...
Actually, it is still beyond me how the game can produce viewable movie files for PBEM and cannot produce an appended file for each turn during regular play. Maybe CM2.

I noticed that the tank ammo display only reports main gun rounds and not MG ammo. Does this mean that like hand grenades MG ammo for tanks is not budgeted or am I missing something?
Thanks.

I am glad you folks are enjoying this.
I wish I had been the source of all this wisdom as opposed to simply the compiler. But maybe someday ...

I am using the CM One Click utility to play PBEM. I was wondering if there is a CM One Click utility for easily playing back all the movies of your PBEM. Such a utility would seem to be quite similar in design.
Does anyone know if there is such a thing?
Thanks.

Yes, I was. I guess my troops were getting lonely for their buddies.

Can your global moral diminish from 100% without suffering any casualities, captured, units going off the map, or vehicles knocked out/abandoned?
I was playing a scenario with the AI (20 turns). I was taking my time to position forces for a quick and decisive attack. I hadn't been spotted, or spotted the enemy, or heard any fire. Yet, as each turn went by, my global moral was dropping a few percent per turn.
What would account for that?
Thanks.

I am just getting started with PBEM play and purchasing units. Are there any good guides or threads that provide an overview for beginners?
Thanks.

Does anyone know what happened to this site? Thanks.

This is the cross post on the Steel Beast forum if anyone is interested (posts sort from newest to oldest):
-
What I am saying is from what I learned from Steel Beasts and reading some armor materials. Four tanks moving individually is not the same as four tanks moving in a platoon formation.
The four tanks moving in a platoon formation depending on their orders and configuration will be in much better shape to deal with a sudden attack from an unexpected axis.
-
NOTE: This question will be cross posted on both the Steel Beasts and Battle Front forums.
Steel Beasts has conditioned me to think of tanks acting in platoons. Yet, when I look at Combat Mission unlike squads (which model 9-12 soldiers), tanks are modeled as individual units; not platoon abstractions.
Were tank tactics different in WWII?
One of the key differences in Combat Mission between American and German tanks seems to be the American tanks have faster turret rotation. This translates into being able to beat German tanks to the draw when the two sides are not fighting from prepared positions. If German tanks operated as platoons, like they do in Steel Beasts, this American advantage would seem to be somewhat neutralized. Since each German wingmen would scan a different area of the battlespace, and the platoon as a who would be prepared to fire on a number of different axis on short notice.
So, why does Combat Mission treat tanks as individual units?
Thanks.

What does it take to win an operation?
I've only been playing battles and all I know about winning is VL flags.
I just played an operation (advance) where I thought I was doing okay to less than average. Instead I was advised when it was done that I had lost misserably.
Thanks.

Ron,
My format looks right, but it just doesn't seem to work properly.

WARNING: THREAD IS A POSSIBLE SPOILER - "A Day in the Calvary".
I am playing the operation, "A Day in the Calvary".
This is my first operation. It is an "advance" operation. So, how do I win? I assume destroy the enemy and transit the map, yes?
I am on my second of four battles. I have advanced up the right side of the map, up the road. My forces:
Some jeeps with MGs.
Some Stuarts.
Some Greyhounds.
Some Howitzers.
A platoon in trucks.
One off map 88mm spotter.
Arrayed against me are:
3 AT/Flak 88mm
Superior numbers of infantry
Terrain:
20% trees/woods
Gently rolling terrain
A few random buildings
One cross map road moving from my position to theirs
Ground wet/damp
Map length 1000-1500 meters (don't recall just now)
The challenge (I've tried a number of times with saved games and different approaches):
The German 88mm are first hidden. But at the risk of losing a jeep or greyhound, they can be made to expose themselves.
However, even after exposing themselves, they basically rule the map. They have a tremendous reach and fire power relative to my AFVs.
I am unable to maneuver/flank/approach them due to the fact that they have a solid buffer of infantry with a line of scattered mines running across the map. MG fire against them is either out of range or ineffective. The 37mm guns of the Stuarts are also ineffective despite an effort to use hunt/hull down tactics.
I have tried using my off map 88mm to wide area target one of the guns. But such an approach seems unable to knock it out.
Then, I tried using the 88mm to supress one of the guns while attacking with the Stuarts. That got me a trade of one Stuart for one AT gun. However, I don't think I can knock out the three guns by doing this. Also, I am under the impression that trading one light tanks per gun is not in my favor.
I haven't tried getting my spotter forward and using direct fire against the 88s. Would this be worthwhile?
The other thing I have not tried is laying smoke on or in front of the guns. However, once I got my smoke screen, I still don't see how I would proceed to take them out. Perhaps, I would fight my way through their infantry buffer so that I would be at a better range to attack them?

Any suggestions from the senior commanders here would be appreciated! Thanks!

Argh!
Could someone please tell me what I did wrong? I thought I followed the correct syntax here.
Thanks
