  1. @Schoerner´s post about politics: What´s this? A little bit conspiracy theories about the German gouvernment, a little bit concern for a family father (and racist), small attacks on the law for being non-democratic and the knowledge of Nazi songs - combined with the nickname Schoerner, one of those Nazi-generals, that shot their own men. What kind of person are you, Schoerner? I am getting SICK by nationalistic and antidemocratic people who pretend to actually defend democracy by defending the right of free speech. As you hopefully know, the right for freedom of speech is only one of the basic rights. Whenever two rights collide (most popular: Freedom of Speech vs. Personal Honor / Menschenwürde), a judge has to decide which one is more important in the special case. To classify German laws as "totalitarian rubber-laws" just shows your hate for our system (which obviously does not do enough for "heros" like Schoerner). Mr. Rennicke is not only a father of five, but probably - thru his songs - responsible for some skinheads hitting foreigners. And you are wrong on the BPJS: - "Indiziert" is the first step and it means, that you are theoretically allowed to buy it, although in reality, the stores won´t have it. On the other hand, there are specialised shops for such kind of games, books, videos - as soon as someone sees a demand for it. Just the way a liberal economy works. "Indiziert" means: No minor should be allowed to buy the good and there is no marketing allowed. If you want to buy it, ask for it. Examples are: Max Payne; Doom... - No books are getting burned in Germany. It is possible to ban certain literature (movies, games), but there are strict rules for the BPjS. Examples were "Hitler Dicator"; "KZ Manager" and similar titles. "(ofcourse also all internationalistic, because the capital holding them is international)" The term "internationalistic" is very interesting to see, as it the usual word used by Nazis to describe the liberal and economy-oriented democrats. But the best part of your post are the timelines: " If these laws will not be abolished very soon (5 years), the system is shoveling it's own grave." "till the germans will become a minority in their own land (and this will happen in the big cities in ~9 years)." I am very curious: From which scientific study do you take this amazingly accurate and of course disturbing data? ;-} I can´t wait for the next 5 years to go by and see, how our democratic system will still be in a good shape. And yes - we in Germany usually take some pride in being a multi-cultural country (like the US) and why shouldnt we? Living in one of the big cities, I really enjoy working and living with people from different countries, from different parts of the world. As for holding down opposition: I am very happy that right-wing parties (which by the way not forbidden here in Germany) are completely without impact anymore. Time to open the people´s eyes? Thankfully this is done. That´s why we usually do not find many posts like yours from a German. I am very sorry to have turned the discussion in a political way, but I am feeling very uneasy reading his post.
  2. Actually, the Scharfschützen in the Wehrmacht were not to penetrate enemy lines, but to stay a little bit behind the frontline. In contrast to the Russian snipers, who were ordered to stay near the front and take out enemies far behind, the German´s believed more in the added value of selecting targets while being not directly exposed to enemy fire. There is - as usual - no right or wrong in the approaches: While the German had more time and less stress to endure while aquiring the target (thus probably producing better shooting results), the Russian sharpshooter had a more direct impact on both, Russian and German morale. Nice book on that issue (fiction, but very good researched): "A Grandfather´s Tale: Story of a German sniper" or, of course, "War of Rats". In this way, sharpshooters in CM are more like the Russian approach, while the Scharfschützen are more difficult (perhaps impossible) to model in CM. I never heard of the difference of sharpshooters or snipers in the Wehrmacht. As i know there was only the "Scharfschütze". His aim was to get behind enemy lines, find a good hiding place and to wait there several days till usually a HQ commander could be knocked out. The persons taken for this job were selected by very good annoy-strenght, 'cause most of them knew, that they will have only one shot from the actual hiding-place. One shot for days of waiting. This would mean they were a kind of snipers you mention and CM obviously doen't model snipers or german Scharfschützen. Maybe someone has infos, if sharpshooters modeled in CM ever existed in german Heer? What was their naming? If they existed, where have they been taken from and did they use a Scharfschützengewehr? I can't believe that german commanders choosed well suited soldiers for sharpshooting missions. Where did they take the necessary Scharfschützengewehr (sniper-gun)? 1500 km in Russia, where they were glad when they had some meat. I'm quite happy with the gameplay of the sharpshooters, but for better realism i believe they would deserve a complete rework with the engine-rewrite. It should be able to place the german Scharfschütze everywhere in the setup-phase, but the player doesn't see, what they "see". He just sees on the info screen, what they already hit.</font>
  3. It would be very interesting how you spot your target at 500m. Or how you are able to focus your eyes on your target through the sights at 500m. And what kind of weapon would be build for ranges up to 500m w/o having some kind of scope? My experience with assault rifles: With my old 7,62mm it was possible to shoot up to 200m, maybe for ppl with better eyes to 250. The rifle itself could be (theoretically) used up to 350m, which was the range for it being equipped with a scope. For a 5,56 assault rifle (even tho with better sights), range drops a little bit, if you are not shooting on a perfectly clear shooting range w/o wind. Usually, effective fighting range for assault rifles were 75 - 150m for infantry squads and up to 350m for the sharpshooter (NOT a sniper, of course). With 7,62mm the shooting range for "sport" events was up to 200m - at least on the events I shot at.
  4. Now that really sounds, as if your postman was Pancho Villa / Mannerheim - although, I still think, that it was all made of by Ambrose Bierce, who wanted to draw our attention away from the fact, that he had a son with one of the vampire dancers in the Titty Twister, a son, he decided to call Adolfos, who later emigrated to Austria, then Germany and the rest became history. But the story doesn´t stop there: After the war, A. fled to South America, where he first heard of Elvis Presley (also stationed in Germany - coincidence??) - so he abducted him (while faking his death) and made him become a prof. killer. And now guess who killed JFK? And next week, we will explain the part of the Merowinger dynasty and how they cooperated with the same aliens, that built the Washington Monument... :cool:
  5. Just as a funny side-note: There is even a street named after him in the eastern part of Germany (in a city called Jena), a little bit ridiculous naming a street after a spy...
  6. On the other hand, we should not overrate the German sub efforts. In the end, our U-Boote did not really have any other effect than tying up the British fleet a little bit (while having enormous losses). Sure - in the beginning, it was a huge success, same as you experience in SC, when you move your 2 boats down south and cost the UK ´bout 20 MPP per turn. I think, the combat values are perfectly okay (how much chance of success would a sub have in attacking a cruiser fleet?). The detection values on the other hand might be a little bit high w/o research on sonar/asdic (and implicit Huff/Duff). Just my 0,2 cent
  7. Hmmm - I think, Norse, you should at least respond to my apologies. Or do you think "I read it once, and no matter what that guy says, he is not worth talking to?" ;-}
  8. Wow - I didn´t even know, what I intended to say, actually, I didn´t think at all about any "meaning" and certainly, I didn´t mean to be disrespectful to Norway or the USA! Please accept my apologies, I certainly was not up to insult you or any other Norwegian. I just thought, it was funny, that a country with such a great "naval border" had so little subs, and I tried to explain with that fighter aircraft statement, that it´s not better in "my" country at all! I have a few colleagues in Norway whom I see on a regular basis, and they belong to the coolest people I met - none of them would ever think of me as being "anti-Norwegian", but of course, as you do not know me personally, my post was probably written bad enough to cause this p.o.v. Sorry - won´t happen again :-}
  9. Naah, I think, the African campaign was very significant for the course of war and as such, it deserves at least a few more hexes. Have the Axis advance through Alexandria and Cairo and move on to aid the troops on the Russian front - or have the British fight to win a place from where to jump to Italy - this was not just some "nice to fight" battle (as no battle is), but there were real intersts in that theatre. Did you ever place German units and an HQ into that theatre in SC? Not? Well, why did they do it, then? Just to help out their allies with some useless troops and inexperienced commanders? ;-} This was THE FRONT against the British (again, should I say "Tommies"? ;-} ) so it should maybe be important in SC as well. Will buy the game anyways...
  10. I have to agree - especially on the North African part. This was always (for me) the most interesting part of the entire war. I mean, where did you see such a attack-fallback-attack-fallback kind of battle? "Funny" thing I read about that campaign: Because of the rapidly changing front lines, German special forces (Brandenburger) and British SAS used the same supply points during the ever-changing course of battle. Oh, and by the way: How often do you find equally gifted commanders on both sides? Auchinleck, Rommel, Alexander, Montgomery (although I still think, the Monty is overrated)
  11. Anyone remember Coke and Coke Classic? Also very funny from a marketing point of view! But regarding Norway: I just recently had an interesting discussion with some folks from the Norwegian Department of Defense: Actually Norway has no more subs than Germany (yea, talking about present day) - and even Germany cut them down to a silly number... Just a funny example for all you American people (should I call them "Yankees", as in "the Jerry Generals"? ;-} ) who don´t know, how it is to live with a tight defense budget ;-} Oh, and does anyone remember the European Fighter Aircraft discussion? After years of discussion, they build a plane, that is outperformed by the latest generation of US planes - but they do fly, while the European aircraft is still in testing. I guess, this one was off topic. Sorry! Well, "we" didn't decide to call it Cola Light. It was the Cola Corp headquarters from the US who got their hands on a report which concluded that the stomach of kids under 15 just didn't handle regular Cola! That is why they decided to call it Cola Light, so that kids can enjoy Cola too It is an experiment from the Cola HQ really, once the reports have been confirmed then they will change the name to Cola Light all over the world (espesically in the US, where the government have already asked that it'll be called Cola Light: For Kids). LOL Oslo, the capital. It has a harbour in SC Now you know what your primary objective will be in SC lol ps: SC will be released when it is done </font>
  12. Hmmm - why do you think, that the way, the game handles invasions is not good enough? In a game, that is set out not to micromanage every single bit of military and economic tasks, it is completely okay, if there are certain "unrealistic" features in it. Personally, I feel, that it works quite well, units are out of supply after one turn, if there is no HQ, so players will have to take one with them. Also, units suffer landing casualties, to show, that it is more difficult than a "normal" border crossing. And, most of the time, the available hexes for landing are limited, so it usually takes more than one turn to land a reasonable force. For the annoyance raids: I think, getting a corps into enemy territory as an annoyance is quite the same as the various special forces (like German´s "Divison Brandenburg", like (UK) Stirling´s SAS, the Commandos, the SBS, Italian frogmen, US Special Forces (don´t know, how they were called then) and certainly there were such units on Japanese side as well) - not really a threat in a military sense, as it is just one unit (probably just a Corps, if players do this as an annoyance), but nevertheless, it forces players to have garrison troops - for me, it works. Hey, at last, there is a game, that doesnt focus on that micromanagement, but on the big view, on the strategies and big-scale tactics. I never liked to play those Avalon Hill games with thousands of options, all of them just very limited in actually changing something, but if you find the right combination of thousands of possible actions, you win - while this might be of interest for many: These do not seem to be the main target audience for SC, do they? Best, Sheepshooter Good idea. The cost of transport should reflect a higher cost, since planning and execution involves more than merely lining up the landing craft and setting sail. There would be other support craft, such as mine-clearing and anti-coastal and close-in protection beyond the larger task-force fleets. Perhaps 20% of unit's value would be a good start. And, the idea of R&D for better amphib, as Mr Higgins of Louisiana did for USA is also an excellent approach. In addition, I would like to see lower READINESS when the units do make it ashore. The level of cohesion simply cannot be the same as when invading across a land border. Maybe... one turn at sea, you hit the beach at 80%, and 10% less for each additional turn? This would almost force the invader to include a HQ, else his units would deteriorate quite quickly. It also would eliminate many nuisance raids. I can too easily imagine PBEM players throwing Corps around to cause mayhem on foreign shores. :eek: This should NOT be able to be done so nonchalantly. After all, IRL there were few capabilities to launch nuisance raids -- the Brit Commandos and Italian frogmen are the only two I can think of.</font>
