Artillery spotters now "slow". Why?
buckshyesh replied to Lt. Kije's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
Are FOs with wire subject to losing contact, at least temporarily, if they are in an area that is hit by enemy arty? Is that problem abstracted by a permanent or temporary loss of targeting ability? -

Coolest new feature over CMBO

I love being able to place extra fallback foxholes. Actually, does anyone know, if I line up a bunch of foxholes, do they provide the same advantages as a trench line? Or do my troops go in and out of cover as they run down the line of foxholes? -
...I got CMBB in the mail. Now my eyes are red, my back hurts, and I think I know some really bad words in Russian. Not only is it better than CMBO, but it's also HARDER! Spotting is trickier. You have to watch to make sure your arty rounds are falling in the right spot, or else readjust. The tanks are unfamiliar (to me). And the MGs are vicious! Thanks Charles, Matt, Steve, etc.! and good night.

Seriously! Is is a book/manual in a "largish" brown envelope, or is it a box? Last time CMBO was a big surprise because it came in a plain brown envelope. Who got it via the mail in the US and WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE!!!???? Is there COLOUR in the Manual??? I can't wait to see the manual and I can appreciate why the europeans were getting rather bent out of shape over the lack of a REAL 266 page full colour manual. Please update us on the manual. Thanks -tom w[/QB] -

Pausing in the middle of a turn?
buckshyesh replied to lewallen's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
How about a few extra move-reverse commands at the top of the hill? Figure out the time it takes to do a 2-meter back-and-forth move, divide that by the time it takes to acquire and shoot, and that will give you the number of extra moves to plot. Of course, during an IP game, you'll have to make a best guess. And make sure you stay in LOS and hull down during the duration of all the extra moves to get all of the Top Hat and Lowski benefits. -
Thank you!

Where can I find the official Fionn 75 rules? And are there other rules sets that are listed someplace? Thanks

S.L.A. Marshall, Men Against Fire
buckshyesh replied to PiggDogg's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
I remember some mention of the Natural Killer (NK) in John Keegan's "Face of Battle." IIRC, he wrote that, after D-Day, senior military personnel realized that only a small percentage of their men were firing their weapons. So they began organizing the forces into fire teams that included at least one NK. The rest could be expected to carry supplies and amunition, lay down covering fire and serve as alternative targets. From a CM perspective: 1. In a Rifle Team, which weapon would the NK use? 2. For each casualty incurred, shouldn't there be a chance that it's the NK, which would decrease the unit's effectiveness substantially? (On the other hand, Paratroop Teams and Squads would have more NK's, so they could be expected to remain effective despite NK losses.) -
Re. the "Twitch Crowd" comment, people are not exclusively FPSers or CMers. CM appeals to me most of the time, but every now and then, I love digging my teeth into a new shooter. It depends on my mood. This does support the price point that BTS has chosen, though: I've been playing one strategy game, CM, for over a year, while my stack of FPSs is about to topple over! At $100, CM would still be a bargain, if you figured out the $s per hour.

Global Moral can be a real bummer
buckshyesh replied to buckshyesh's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
What really irks me is that Global Moral makes it nearly impossible to make a great come-back from an early setback. Once your troops start feeling like the day is lost, there's almost no way to rally them for a herioc finish. -
I did a search and saw some discussion about how Global Moral (GM) gets lowered due to split squads and unit losses. But little has been said about the effect of GM on game play. Does anyone find it de-motivating to continue a game after they experience early losses? I like the concept of having to respond to setbacks by filling gaps and revamping plans mid-battle as a test of one's tactical skills. But after losing some units, I also have to deal with the loss of effectiveness of what I have left. It's a positive feedback loop: Losing units leads to decrease in GM, which leads to decreased spotting, to-hit and individual moral, which leads to losing more units... Does anyone else feel this way? Is there any way to counter-act this effect? Can I raise my GM in anyway (besides reuniting split squads)?

Did I mention, it's a Compaq?

I've been experiencing crumby graphics quality. And I talked to a friend on the phone about this. He told me to run dxdiag. Then he told me to click on the Display tab. When I said, "Display 1 or Display 2," he hollared "AHA! There should only be one Display tab! You have to do something about the BIOS thing." That was all he could tell me. The Display 1 tab is for the Voodoo3 PCI card, I installed a few months ago myself. The Display 2 tab is for the Trident Blade3D/MVP4(63) piece of poo that came with my computer, which is an AMD 500MHz with 120MB RAM and Win98. Any suggestions?
