  1. A big thanks to all those who put in an effort into this wonderful work.
  2. hi, I had an elite Sturmkompanie squad (thats 13 guys) post 362 casualies  with the loss of 4 own guys. Ok so the deck was loaded for them : max ammo, in a trench and barbwire in front, guarding a very narrow wooded approach and 6 MG42 as cover. The AI sent nearly all their infantry down this obvious path. The all piled up in front of the barbed wire and got massarced.
  3. Sorry no. I was too dumbfounded and distressed to press print screen.
  4. I was playing the Dergatchi Roadblock?(Stassensperre) campaign as Russian, in which I had messed around a bit with the units. So I gave the Germans a JU-87D Stuka, which then attacked me in round 3. So what happens? He dropes 4 bombs, I get a huge camera shake, EVERY building on the map gets flattened  , I loose half my troops and I can´t see a thing because there´s so much dust in the air. So yeah, is this for real or what p.s. after that attack I surrendered. no need to continue after that.
  5. Remembering what my grandad said, by March `45, most heavy equipment was just dumped along the roadside, when the fuel ran out. They would often clog up the roads. So I´m sure that by then, lots of tanks were captured without battle action.
  6. yeah!! I´m getting my copy sent to me on the 20.September. Thats´s very soon and its cheap too. I remember paying close to 80 USD to get Combat Mission beyond Overlord sent to Austria. But it was worth more than every cent then and I´m sure this copy will be worth the same to me again.
  7. Thx for your concern Schrullenhaft. Well so far I have had no crashes with the reinstalled nvidia drivers (they could have been corrupted since I did have virusprotector and firewall running while downloading/installing). I don´t think it is heat related, since although it is a small casing crammed with cards and chips, I have run graphics-heavy games such as Morrowind at high resolution without a glitch. Also there is no gradual graphics corruption - just a sudden freeze without warning. As fot the chipset, I had a look at the packardbell homepage: explorer motherboard: MS-6511 VIA chipset. Anyhow I hope the crashes are a thing of the past. But I will heed your advice and keep the casing open. (I just hope my 2 and 5 year olds don´t think all those cables and cards are highly interesting and need a spontaneous stress test). regards ralf
  8. Ok first thx to your replies. I downloaded the game again (eliminating possibility of corrupted game) and yet the game crashed again. This time it chashed only after 30 min. and rebooted, allowing for an internal analysis. Windows identified it as a Nvidia drivers problem. The thing is however, I had already downloaded their latest 30.82 driver version before and got those crash probs. I then proceeded to download the detonator drivers (no idea if they replace the nvidia drivers or just assist - I am a computer newbie) and had the crashes. So now I´m back to downloading the 30.82 driver version of nvidia and will replace(?) the detonator drivers. Well we´ll see. I´ll give it another shot.
  9. hmmm.. I´m experiencing game freezes every 10 min. The first thing I did was get all the latest drivers (now I know what motherboard I have). But still, I get a complete gamefreeze, with no possibilty to get to desktop. Since I use Windows XP, going to desktop would have allowed some analysis. I´ve actually given up on playing the demo. My specs are: Win XP Athlon +1800 Nvidia Geforce4 ti4200 Detonator XP driver SB Live! Packard Bell Explorer motherboard 512 mb ram directx 8.1 should I send an email or is it my hardware/software compatibilty?
  10. Heh, here in Vienna we still have quite a few of those conctrete giants around. Actually I had 2 right in front of my nose whilst living for 7 years in my student apartment. They are so massively constructed, that after the war they tried to demolish them, but failed miserably. The city fathers realized that they would need so much dynamite, that all surrounding buildings within hundreds of meters would be heavily damaged. The ones in Vienna are cylindrical in shape, about 15 stories high and have 2 flak platform levels for 4 flak cannons each. The flak platforms stick out like roundish balconies and are separated by 90deg. around the building (if my memory serves me correctly). They also sport a few firing slits, but apart from that they seem only to have been conctructed as air defence fortresses. The ones they did try to destroy are off limits to the public, but one of the undamaged ones now houses the city aquarium and is integrated into a sports center (climing wall).
  11. hmm I´ll let the T-34s and KV1s come storming into my positions without artillery and infantry support and i´ll kiss them good night with my hidden 88´s.
  12. Hi there, without trying to glorify any army, I would like to note that my granddad spent 6 years in the war (on the front) and 5 of those on the east front. According to his experience they (the Axis forces) where usually outnumbered, especially towards the end of the war. The Axis forces often had to withdraw because they ran out of ammo. Mostly the quality of the Soviet Army was poor (he claims that they where often drunk) and they seldom had contact with the Soviet guards. He also states, that their attillery did the most damage (and the Russian winter). His maxim was never to get caught by the Russian army - the Axis forces where apparently terrified of getting captured. Anyway I`m just saying what I heard from him (yes it is a very subjective opinion). I myself can`t say what it really was like ( I`m sure it was living hell for all participants on the east front). 13. Hi all, having been a SMG gunner in the Austrian army myself, I can contribute some personal experience: We used the MG42 (some even had swastikas on them)as an exercise weapon: taking apart and putting together again, barrel changes (5 seconds is no prob )etc. and had the MG74 as our real weapon (is basically an update of the 42). I found the MG74 to be a very accurate weapon, being easily able to hit small stationary targets at 300-400 m. Its effective range is 600m and 1000m with tripod. There are 3 reasons not to fire the MG like a madman: Only with short bursts (4-5 shots)is it possible to maintain control and therefore accuracy over the weapon. The only time we trained the full-out use of the MG was being in a defensive position and being confronted by an assault at close range (less than 300 m) with the sole purpose of pinning down the enemy. 2. A reason not to use the MG full-out is ammo wasting - you never know how long have have to survive on that ammo. 3. You seldom have a fixed position with a MG but rather need to maintain mobility and cover your platoon from the flank. That means you are hefting alot of weight so you dont want to waste those dearly carried rounds(13 kgs for the MG alone, then 200 rounds plus backpack and smaller items (and sometimes a pistol), while your buddy has the tripod, usually 1000 rounds and his own assault rifle StG 77 with 5 clips. p.s. firstly I want to note, that although I have a fascination for military equipment and love war games, I abhor war and will always prefer a peaceful solution and secondly I am fully aware of the atrocities committed by my country during 38-45 and feel a deep regret for them and yet I am proud of my grandfather who served from 40-45 on the Russian front as a recon unit, getting wounded 4 times and losing his leg in March 45 due to an explosive bullet, aswell as recieving the Iron Cross for bravery (although he got degraded twice for cheekiness to a superior).
