Sigh...The forgotten Pacific Front.
Louie the Toad replied to Mailer's topic in Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord
Mailer, I think you missed my point. Without the Ship and Aircraft fighting the Pacific is of little interest to me... due to jungle fighting, few roads, limited maneuverability, blasting the enemy out of caves, few AFV types, lack of tank vs tank.. only 1 Axis army....not enough variables. Every battle will seem like the last and the next. Ho Hum....... Toad -
Sigh...The forgotten Pacific Front.
Louie the Toad replied to Mailer's topic in Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord
As I look over the descriptions you list, the LESS I think it would be fun in the Pacific. Possible exception - Beach landings. But the rest of it, jungle fighting, limited use of Tanks and certainly few Tank vs Tank battles. Limited AFV types to play with, only one Axis army. At the current level of CM this would just not be fun for me. The bigger picture with ships and aircraft would have to be in the play of the game, imbedded in a significant way, for me to be interested. No rumble in the jungle..... Toad -
CMAK will not make CMBB obsolete
Louie the Toad replied to Runyan99's topic in Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin
Since CMBB first came out I have asked for an early years game. AK comes close to that. Why the early years? An era of experimenting, (thus variations) with armor and infantry formations. The player could design his own force (within limits) without much criticisim because that is what was happening. Less emphasis on the big armor vs bigger gun race. Interesting AFVs. (also could be read 'quirky') If an Early Years game does come out the new game engine will be required to handle the variety. For instance tanks with multiple main armaments. Maybe then the cavalry and motorcycle enthusiasts will have their wishes granted too. Quirky..... Toad -

Battlefield Communications US and German
Louie the Toad replied to Louie the Toad's topic in Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord
I am still curious about communication on the attack. Land lines obviously are out. So by what means would a platoon leader give info to and get orders from a Co Commander. I could be assuming a much greater distance between platoon and CO HQ than was actually the case. How distant were platoons from Co HQ while on the attack. All I can find in the basement is FM 22-5 .. Close Order Drill. Parade Rest.... Toad -
I don't recall seeing this on the forum. What type of communication would an infantry platoon leader have with a company commander, Company commander with Battalion HQ? Was it a radio? A Walkie Talkie (not much use as I have heard (pun intended)) A runner? If a radio, how was it transported? Platoon Leader's communication: Company Commander communication: USA: Germany: If you know, please let me know too... Toad Thanks.

Hull Down Trouble
Louie the Toad replied to Uncle Socrates's topic in Combat Mission - Tips and Tricks
Do the 'assault guns' you mention have turrets? Hull down = turret up.... Toad -
So...what does CMAK's interface look like?
Louie the Toad replied to Bergerbitz's topic in Combat Mission: Afrika Korps
I like the look too. But I never understood the need for the map picture. That info seems unnecessary. Whereas the picture that comes up when a unit is selected at least gives important info about where the unit is located. Has anyone thought to add passenger info to the first Unit screen? So that one does not have to go to a second screen to check whose on board. Whose on first?..... Toad -
If you are in command of XXXXX then in the game to simulate reality you should intuitively know the XXXXX language. So XXXXX language translation should be supplied to you. You don't necessarily know the enemy's language. You could get that from experience or a dictionary. As far as using the enemy's language to pick up intelligence about him, yes that should happen. It helps to know if a voice from the other side yells the equivalent of "lets get out of here". But then of course you would only know what the enemy was saying by combat experience or the dictionary. What do you suppose Austrailian will sound like? ---Toad

Lane, They give you an advantage by helping you estimate ranges and elevations. Personally I think its gamey to play that way vs the AI or against someone who isn't using the grids. I think there are shaded grassy terrain mods out there that help visualize the elevations without having to use the the artificial turf. That is why I sign off on posts regarding gridded terrain with comments such as.... Chalk marker .... Toad

"Ramming Speed" new order. I love it.... Toad -
Hi Franko, We played ABH as two player vs AI but not as operational and tactical commanders. We just thought of trying that a week or two ago. If we don't find anything suitable we may use ABH in this experiment. It is such an enjoyable scenario. If you are asking how it went as two player... We played the German side. One of us attacked along the gully and the other moved along the road with Whitmann's group then turned toward the two small towns, attacking them from the flank and rear. It took a long time...too long before one attack helped the other. Pincer... Toad

There is no doubt that battlefield shock exists. However in CM should it be placed in the AI or remain in the mind of the shocked player? As I write this I recall that the AI sometimes 'takes over' a unit for self preservation purposes. Isn't that what happened in the action on the bridge discribed above? My conclusion is, that in the mind of the shocked player or with the AI .... to borrow a phrase: "It's in the game!" ............ Toad
