  1. Jack Carr,

do you usually play allies? If that's the case the only problem is it that it becomes too easy too win ;)

Now that's historical I know, but it tends to lead to bad habits and tactics which the extra forces cover up. When you start playng real people in PBEM/TCP you'll get slaughtered.

BTW with QB's I usually let the AI defend, 1000pts med trees and hills, med map, farmland.

  2. Well impatient as I am for CMBB I'm grateful for these little titbits and scraps of info. Thanks Rune for hosting and the guys who've posted on what they've seen.

Guys, remember other game companies read these forums too, so BFC/BTS have a reason for keeping some of their cards close to their chest.

  3. Yankeedog,

looked up the words in question in the OED (shorter) and it seems that no grogs were involved in the compilation of the dictionary.

    ;)

Sniper E19 A person who snipes or shoots from cover; a sharpshooter.

Sharpshooter E19 1: A person skilled in shooting accurately, an expert marksman.

2: Mil. A rifleman of a particular grade. US L19.

  4. KiloIndiaAlpha,

or should I call you KIA ;) Thanks for the tip, but I'm afraid I've tried at Amazon.uk before (last month in fact) and they said it was out of print. They need to update that webpage.

    IPA

yes, I'm in Taiwan but I'm visiting the UK in August. Thanks for the tip about Borders, I'll try and find out if they have one in Taipei.

:( Just checked and No Borders in Taiwan and they don't have the book in their US stores.

  5. Shapeshifter,

I've been using SoftHome.net for the last few months and have been very happy. Works fine with PBEM. It's free, includes POP3, 15mb mailbox and 45mb of transfers a month and NO spam. Let me repeat the last point ZERO SPAM, unlike Yahoo and Hotmail. http://www.softhome.net/

With file size it's the number of vehicles rather than the map size that counts. I think the biggest I've done was around 1.5mb. 2mb+ would seem very large indeed.

  6. Darknight_Canuck,

What was the Recce Regt for the division?

It's not as simple as "5th Recce Regt" is it?

It seems it was indeed the 5th Recce Regt of the RAC (Reconnaissance Corps). Sources; M.Bellis and J. Bouchery.

BTW Michael, lots of great stuff on your Tommy site I hadn't noticed before. Have you added to it recently?

  7. Deadly Dave,

it's not going to happen. BTS are very firm on that and always have been. Most players agree.

with all the requests for accurate force selections and fair picks not cherry picked forces

Actually, in CMBB the new choices of Fixed rarity and variable rarity should solve most of the "issues" with this. I must say I never had a problem with opponents cherry picking unrealistic forces. Perhaps the answer is to "cherry pick " your PBEM players :D

  8. Michael,

Tout in "A Fine Night for Tanks" 1998, is sure that Joe Eskin's Firefly got Wittmann and a few other Tigers in that engagement. He says no ground support aircraft were flying until later in the day. Tout also says there were some 34 Fireflies, "...within range of Wittmann's route..."

Reynolds in "Steel Inferno" 1997, explains how "A" Squadron of the 1st Northants Yeomanry had generally been credited with the kill. He then says, that "recently" Hubert Meyer in the magazine Der Freiwillige claimed that a Typhoon had got Wittmann. Reynolds concludes that, "...the only thing that therefore which can be said with any certainty is that Wittmann did not survive the 8th of August...."

Reynolds writes that Wittmann's remains were found in March '83 and matched with his dental records. An ID disc of his driver H.Reimers was found in the "intermingled remains. Tout and Kurowski say the same thing.

Kurowski in the 1992 "Panzer Aces" claims that the Shermans got Wittmann. In the 2000 edition there is an editors note which says that some now claim a Typhoon got the hit on tank 007.

Kurt Meyer in "Grenadiers" who was in the vicinity at the time says that at shortly before 1100hrs near Hill 190 allied planes attacked a combat team of the Algonquin Regiment under Lt-Col Worthington. So it would seem some allied planes were active on the morning of the 8th.

  9. Nac4,

if you've played the game as much as you claim you'd have realized casualties DO matter in the final score/victory levels.

One particular example I remember was in a PBEM game I played last year. On the final map my opponent held 3 out of the 4 flags and the 4th was undecided. I still won because I'd inflicted more casualties.

  10. Panzer leader,

I would say it depended on the price. If you can get it cheaply it might be worth it, but as it sells for $42 or so and is quite popular it's unlikely to be a bargain.

My copy came as a gift and I would have been very diasppointed if I'd paid serious cash for it.

IMO Reynolds Steel Inferno or Men of Steel are better value and more useful for scenario making. He quotes many of the best lines from Grenadiers anyway.
