1. I solved the problem! As I mentioned earlier, it had something to do with that little program I installed. It´s called "Windows 2000 NVidia Refresh Rate Fix" and you can find it here: http://www.planetquake.com/ztn/ I don´t know exactly what it does, but as far as I understood it will raise the default refresh rates that come with NVidia reference drivers under Win2k. It worked really fine with Counterstrike to achieve refresh rates above 60Hz, but somehow CM refused to work with this settings. I reloaded all the default NVidia settings (there is a restore function) and now I use CM with 1024x768@85Hz. Contrary to this statement I must agree with Madmatt. I do see a differernce between 75 and 85Hz for example. It is a small almost not noticable flickering when you take a look parallel to your monitor. As far as I can remember biology lessons this has something to do with the human eye´s ability to detect moving objects better in it´s lateral field of view. Anyway, thanks for your help. ------------------ "I am no fool!" Michael

 3. UBB SHOULD BE ON Win2k does recognizes my monitor as a Dell1226H. I´ll check this out. I recently installed a tool called "NVidia Refresh rate fix", a small program which sets the default refresh rates higher than initial 60MHz (this comes handy if you play games like CS). Maybe this is the cause of trouble. I know. Win2k is not the best for games (especially elder, DOS based; that´s why I had to say goodbye to PanzerGeneral95, sniff), but I choose it for many other good reasons and won´t change it again. Thanx you for your help, ------------------ "I am no fool!" Michael
 4. After reinstalling Win2k, CM will only run in 640x480@120 software mode. If I accept this option on the initial config screen, CM will use the software renderer which looks awful (have you ever tried this? Reminds me of old C64 games...). If I skip, CM will bail out and display the following message: Could not initialize Direct3D graphics Other games (Counterstrike) show no problems with Direct3D or OpenGL. My config: Duron800@1000MHz, Epox8KTA3, 128MB SDRAM, Win2k SP1, DirectX8.0a german, GeForce2MX, NVidia reference drivers 6.50, Quicktime 4.0, Dell 1226H monitor P.S.: Does this problem have something to do with monitor refresh rates? ------------------ "I am no fool!" 5. A good friend from HighSchool used to call me this way. I adopted it as a nickname, but I continue to use different nicks in different online environments (for example: Fleischwurst, Wurstwasser, Pvt. Piddleborough). Although it may sound italian, it is simply derived from my name, Michael Miler. ------------------ "I am no fool!" Michael
 6. I have to agree with Tom´s statements above. I doubt that there would be any chance to pass computer game software containg the term "Waffen SS" anywhere. The same applies to swastikas or any other sign of former NSDAP organizations (like Hitler Youth). It is still very interesting that the usage of the Iron Cross (Eisernes Kreuz) is not prohibited in any way, especially not in Computer games. As Tom already mentioned we have to differentiate between media (e.g. games, books, videos, music, etc.) put on the so called "Index" by the BPS on the one hand and completely "banned" media on the other hand. Indexed (?) games are not considered illegal and may still be purchased if you are older than 18 years. Of course, there are other serious restrictions to marketing: those "indexed" games may not be advertised or displayed in show-cases anymore. Banned games on the other side are officially declared illegal by german courts (bitte korrigieren falls falsch) and possession or distribution is prohibited by law. As far as I can remember only very few games were actually "banned" by german courts, and those which experienced this fate really did deserve it (titles like "KZ Manager" where you had to manage a german concentration camp in WWII). A few years ago PanzerGeneral experienced some trouble and as far as I can remember it had something to do with inaccurate (=Nazi) text passages in the manual. But today, PanzerGeneral and it´s successors are legally availabe on the german market and RTS-game "Sudden Strike", which is set in a WWII background is very popular over here. On the other hand, games like Quake, Soldiers of Fortune and other bloody FPS have been put on the "Index" by the BPS and therefore are only availabe to adults. But this surely has not hampered their popularity and distribution among german computer players in any way Replacing all swastikas (like in PanzerGeneral) would be okay for german market, but the usage of ther term "Waffen SS", well, I dunno. Would surely be difficult Just my 2 Pfennig, ------------------ "I am no fool!" Michael

 10. I was also wondering, but after a quick look at Gordon Williamson´s book "The SS: Hitler´s Instrument of Terror" it should be the abbreviation for "Rottenführer". He compares this lower enlisted rank with "Obergefreiter" in the Wehrmacht, which should be something like corporal in the US Army (correct me if I´m wrong). ------------------ "I am no fool!" 11. When purchasing german units for my PBEM I have so many choices concerning different service branches (Heer, Fallschirmjäger, SS, Gebirgsjäger, Volkssturm) and different formations (rifle squads, Sturmgruppen, SS-Rifle, Escort squads, VG squads, SMG squads, Füsilier squads, etc...). Looking at the allied possibilites, there are only rifle squads, parachute squads and glider squads IIRC. My question is: does this historically model the allied troops during WWII or was there simply more research put into german formations (I doubt this since I assume that BTS surely had some WWII buffs on this board to help them)? If such few specialized allied formations were normal, could someone explain this to me? Thank you, ------------------ "I am no fool!" Michael
 12.
quote:
Man könnte dann ganz zwanglos Partien vereinbaren , ein Tournier starten oder auch mal - tolle Idee - eine Art LAN-Party.

Concerning this, please read my "Deutsche ACHTUNG - Germans listen up" thread. It seemed that there wasn´t that much interest in LAN-gaming for now (maybe until TCP/IP patch is out). Have a nice day... ------------------ "I am no fool!" Michael

I just study here... I´m more into football since Saturday, after I saw my first "Braunschweig Lions" game Please, send me a setup, I´ll send you a mail... ------------------ "I am no fool!" Michael
 16. Gamey - schmamey! I mean, in a game actually everything gamey. Although this may sound dumb, any game relies on modelling and abstraction and can never be a 100% copy of reality. But I of course would accept it if my PBEM opponent considered CM more as some kind of "combat simulator" than a game (as somebody pointed out earlier) and therefore it surely is the best solution to talk about personal preferences and the scenario settings before the PBEM starts. By doing so, this whole gamey discussion will be pointless... Have a nice day, ------------------ "I am no fool!" Michael
 17. Thanks Lindan, I already knew the nationalities thread. Besides, it actually was not my intention to collect all german CM players in this thread for counting them... I just wanted to know if there is any interest in doing some activities concerning CM besides the internet, chatting or PBEM over here in Germany (or Poland, Austria, Netherland, eg.). If so, we could combine our efforts and organize something, but if we are still not enough over here in Germany or simply no one is interested in such activities, then I won´t bother... In the chat you pointed out that due to the missing TCP/IP ability a LAN-Party wouldn´t be that fast paced. Maybe you´re right, but I still think that even with hotseat gaming there could be a lot of fun (although I haven´t tried it yet...) And concerning PBEM: of course I have no problem battling non-german opponents (in fact I like bashing non-krauts ) , but you will have to give in that difficult strategy discussions concerning WWII are easier to do in your mothertongue Have a nice day, ------------------ "I am no fool!" Michael

 19. To all german (or vicinity) CM players: How many of us are actually there? I already identified some guys by reading their profile, but I suppose there may be some more lurking around (ganz zuschweige von all denen, die nicht in diesem Forum sind). How many copies of CM have been sold to Germany or countries nearby? I´m asking this because maybe we could bring together some people for a CM-LAN-party or some kind of strategy "pow-wow". Also, battling german PBEM opponents would also be quite interesting... And what about german CM websites where people could meet and post or discuss CM related topics? As far as I know there are two of them (Tom and Lindan, correct me if I´m wrong...) Thanx - Dankeschön ------------------ "I am no fool!" Michael

 21. Thanx to all who have answered so far, it is very interesting to hear what you have to say. As anyone can see, the opinions differ, but there seem to be two positions to extract. The first fraction tends towards veteran units in general. The other one votes for a mix of regualrs and veterans depending on certain strategys. I would agree with L.Tankersley who just (literally) said that a dead or out of ammo veteran unit is just as useless as a regular one. Concerning armour, maybe going veteran for the american panzers seems to be apropriate, but for the germans I usually stick with the "Masse statt Klasse" proverb (literally: masses instead of class; means quantity instead of quality). There is nothing more frustrating than to see a 270 point KingTiger get bogged or immobilized on the first few turns. Rather buy a cheaper Jagdpanzer and two Hetzers for the same money and if anything happens to one of them, well you still got two left. Another point would be my role in the scenario. If I am the defender, I think I would rather rely on quantity and cheap Volkssturm units than quality, but note that in my opinion (like Red Devils pointed out) crucial support units like Panzerschrecks or bazooka should always be veteran since the additional costs are only about 4 points. As mentioned above, the opinions differ and would say that there exists no general rule or agreement and your "shopping" strategy should depend on your opponent, map size, scenario lenght and combat role (attacker, defender, meeting engagement). Kepp those viewpoints coming in, P.S.: If this topic expands, it could be part of a FAQ. ------------------ "I am no fool!" Michael

 23. AS far as I remember you have to delete the preferences file from you CMBO directory. If you then start the game again it will ask you which resolution you want to play with (eg. 800x600, 1024x768). Please correct me if I´m wrog... ------------------ "I am no fool!" Michael
 24. Greetings, since I haven´t found satisfactory answers in old topics I would like to ask for your opinion: When selecting units for a PBEM I am often in a dilemma concerning the experience level of my troops. So, for example, I always have to ask myself: "Okay buddy, are we going to buy this veteren KingTiger for 2xx points or will I rather pick a regular one for xxx and still have some money for a Hetzer (or something)". The same situation fits for infantry, artillery or anything else. It always seems to be a choice between quality and quantitiy ("Masse statt Klasse" - a german proverb) and I just wanted to hear your thoughts and experiences... If this may have already been discussed before, please give me topics. Thanks ------------------ "I am no fool!" Michael
