  1. Let's see - I first started reading this forum shortly after the first beta was out. I started reading regularly when the release date got close. I only registered in August because it was the first time i had a legit question or comment that had not already been answered. I am now up to a whopping 15 posts, so that's about 2 a month since I registered. Yep, i think i classify as a lurker. (I just learned about the smiley legend next to when you post today - where is that puking one?? ) No doubt many active forum members know me more from pbem games or the Annex chat room. Just call me part of the silent majority, Mike
  2. Looks nice to me. This guy is a real talent. Besides, you can never have enough mod options! Mike
  3. I installed the new dd grid grass last night. The map is fine, but I now see 2 long lines of the horizon tiles which are completely black. These are next to the map edge along two edges forming a "t" at one corner of the map and extending off to the horizon. The rest of the horizon is fine. I can get back to my backup bmps fine, and I have opened each of the bmps in dd's zip file and they look ok too. It is almost as if one of the bmps making this tile row is black, but if so I cannot find it. Any help appreciated. Mike
  4. My machine is going on 2 years old: Celeron 433 Mhz processor, Voodoo 3 2000 with 16 meg Ram, 128 meg system Ram. I just updated from the subdued velvet (I think) low-res grass and terrain to the full DD hi-res terrain set. That is probably the main reason for the slow down, but like i said it sure looks good. It's actually not too bad on medium size battles and thats all I have going right now so I may stick it out. It's time for a hardware upgrade soon anyway! BTW you guys are right that FindFast is a resource killer - I had killed that long ago. Mike
  5. I upgraded to a cable modem. Incredibly fast. You can DL stuff in an instant. I did. Hi Res was like a drug. Now my games are... uh... slow. But everything looks pretty! Mike
  6. Schugger, Monty advances is real fun 2 player. River runs through it is too but a bit more fast and bloody and less manuever. very unlikely spoiler below for rune's stuff... . . . . . . . Main thing with rune's scenarios is try not to play it or look at even the setup before you play it "for real". Typically there are lots of surprises along the way... I cannot comment on Tin Tanks since right now my brother is blowing up not only my panzers but also all my buildings. I keep thinking there is no way rune could short the German like this, so I play on.... Mike edited to add a bit more spoiler space in there just in case. 7. Well Schugger, because I only have this info for a very small sampling. I usually ask rune to suggest a 2 player scenario; so far he has fed me Monty Advances, a River Runs through It, Tin Tanks, and a couple others whose names slip my mind. All these are strictly 2 player and non-historical AFAIK. Well River is definetly NOT historic. But still fun. I have no idea of all the others which are historic and may also make good balanced games for example; this would be good to know. I figure if I keep bugging rune every time I start a new pbem he will break down and do some cool descriptions. Mike
  8. Another "thumbs up" here for rune's work! I've had a blast the past couple months playing his 2-player scenarios via double-blind pbem. I agree with the other poster who said some sort of info or readme on what was historical, designed for 2 players, or both, would be nice. Of course you always promptly provide this to me when I ask rune but it is probably something everyone could use. Sounds like a good project for your lackey Mace. keep up the great work. 9. There is another way to easily limit or at least place a risk on buying a lot of heavy stuff: play in snow or rain to increase the chance of bogging. I find this works well on rural or farmland maps where roads are limited. I've played several QBs this way with no other limitations and it makes for fun games. The ground pressure of some of the big stuff doesn't disallow it, but makes it risky depending on the map you get. Mike [This message has been edited by MikeE (edited 01-18-2001).]
  10. Today in a PBEM I got a Panther in a nice Hull Down position and the "bow MG blocked" followed the "Hull Down" text. I don't recall seeing this before or if I have I had not noticed it. I've seen lots of tanks hull down too. Is this something that's been added in a recent patch or have I just taken a long time to see it happen? Also I wonder if it shows if an enemy Hull Down tank has its bow MG blocked. Interesting. Mike
  11. I'll echo what others have said about having no trouble at all finding honest, capable opponents either here on the Forum or from CMHQ chat. I for one would hate to see BTS waste precious coding time on what 95% of folks here see as a non-issue. I also like to play scenarios double blind as a break from the QBs. I'll have to try one of Rune's next it sounds like - hey Airborne if you're reading how about that for our next game? Mike
  12. Thanks for the quick response and the search tip. Yep that sounds like what is happening to me, and how odd it didn't show up in all my months of CM play _until_ I installed the latest driver? Augh! I am at 1024x768, guess I will have to try DirectX8.0 tonight to see if that helps. If not I guess I will be getting a new video card for Christmas! The only good news is that the updated driver did fix the problems I was having with "Sea Dogs".
  13. Hello, over the weekend I upgraded my Voodoo 3 to the latest driver available at the 3dfx site (dated November 10). This was due to some problems with another game, not CM. However after the upgrade I am having occasional display problems within CM. I am almost certain it is the driver because I have not installed any new mods lately. What happens is some of the graphics turn white completely and some flash between white and the correct color. It seems to be random, have seen it happen to soldiers faces, tank BMPs, target lines, terrain, etc. Normally shutting down CM and restarting will correct the problem, at least temporarily. I'm on the first release of the public beta patch. Anyone else running a Voodoo 3 (AGP) and this latest driver with success? thanks. Mike
  14. I have found the AI to do a very decent job picking forces for my 3 pbem QBs. Usually with a 1000 point combined force you will get a couple tanks or TDs, a couple halftracks and a couple armored cars, with the remaining filled by a good infantry and support unit mix. I like the feel of having to make do with what you are given - I've ended up with jeeps a couple times, but at least these and the HTs always have a MG - never gotten a unit that didn't have a gun! Maybe I've been lucky so far, but I'm enjoying these games more than the game where we purchased our own units. A 1000 point meeting engagement with combined arms, on a medium map, seems to provide fairly consistently interesting games, and is probably a good start for a first pbem. I do have a question on the new random force quality selection for AI purchase: does anyone know if it allows for a troop quality mix for any given side? The only time I used it I got all regular quality troops. One thing I do like about buying your own is the ability to mix and match quality amongst your force - seems more realistic. Well as they say on sportstalk radio - "long time listener, first time poster". Mike
