  1. This is a hoax. Please check nai.com and disregard mass-mailings that have the following phrase: "AOL (And/or Microsoft, Sun, IBM, The US Government) have announced this virus is worse than Mellisa (And/or VBS/Joke, VBS/Loveletter, etc.) and you MUST pass this E-mail to everyone you know." It's a weird game that people on the Internet do.
  2. Aaaaaah! Lock it up! Lock it up!! Better hamsters, chinchillas or Lewis than Survivor!!!!!!
  3. Arms for crews are admittedly UNDERpowered. They don't include carbines and are merely pistols. People who want BTS to sacrifice realism (Tank crews) for gameplay are people who are caught up on the ubertank theory, where TCs are brilliant and never mistakenly turn their attention on the wrong thing. Does this also mean you want Tanks to avoid FOs, Jeeps and HTs? Most of these are just as dangerous as crews to the tank, right? Besides, who doesn't like to shoot those bastards in the back.
  4. In reality, this happens all the time. Once, Patton's entire 3rd army surrendered only so they could see what was behind the Seigfreid (Sp?) Line and report it back to Ike, via the radios embedded in their teeth of course. Then Patton pissed in a stream, at least, that's what the Polaroid shows. 5. The only viable solution is to remove the crews, tanks, HTs, guns, arty, sharpshooters, schreks, houses (I mean, come on, how unrealistic are those!), jeeps, MG jeeps, (I mean, come on, how unrealistic are those!), German troops, British Troops, Canadian Troops, Polish Troops (I mean, come on, how unrealistic are those!), airplanes, HQs (I mean, come on, how unrealistic are those!) and foxholes (I mean, come on, how unrealistic are those!). Once accomplished, CM will be a truly realistic simulation of English and German countrysides. Well, mostly. Then we pull out the cardboard...
  6. My vote is for Lewis, as well. Hey, how much cardboard and how many posters do I get for $89.99? Is it high quality cardboard? Crayon or ink? Oh, and can we lock this pointless thread up?
  7. I think, in all fairness, it was pretty obvious I was just having fun. If you look at his first post, you can see what set me off. I mean, kiddie pornographers because someone told him to use the search engine?
  8. But with all the modelers, programmers and artists out there in the CM community, coupled with the Grogs, dem-grogs and quasi-grogs, we could fill out the OOBs for everything that EVER showed its face on the western front. Right?
  9. Shut up, stupid. Oh, and please use the search function to look up the number of times you've been called stupid so people don't have to waste their time doing so in the future. [This message has been edited by Elijah Meeks (edited 08-23-2000).]
  10. Great jokes! Uh, except for that last one by Ghengis Jim, that was just weird and kinda freaky. (Like a yuppie that walks into a sports bar and says, "Oh wow, great touchdown, say does anyone know who the owner is so I can buy his car?")
  11. I've seen what appears to be a bazooka team engage an enemy crew in HtoH combat, killing a member of the crew and running it off. I can send the PBEM movie, if you'd like.
  12. I'd like to hear from BTS as to their openness on 3rd party mods for CM. I know we can make new textures but will they supply independant mod-makers with enough information on CM to add new vehicles or structures? This way a team could add the Sturmtigers, French Resistance or Rangers. BTS could create an approval process (i.e. Madmatt and Fionn) to keep the O.G.R.E., M1A2 and 20CM railgun out.
  13. It was mentioned once before but, wow look at this site.
  14. I understand that SL won't have SS or swastikas and the squads will be multi-racial.
  15. Blah blah blah, scroll down to the bottom of the page. http://www.sharkygames.com/games/columns/beatdown_gencon2k/3.shtml
  16. Matt, What exploit did they use and when, exactly, did it take place? Is CMHQ hosted by someone or do you own the server? What's the OS?
  17. I had the opportunity to interact with Alex Garden, Ron Moravek and Curtis Terry at Relic Entertainment (Homeworld). They mentioned that Valve (Half-Life) was respected by the industry for one reason, that they understood that community was important. I don't think BTS needs any help in developing a community, one look at this board proves that. All I ask is to think of how we would have expected Valve to react, a year ago, if we had said, "I think a multiplayer-only, player-oriented weapons-purchase based, terrorist/anti-terrorist game would be cool with the way Half-Life does things." We would think that Valve would say, "Do you realize the work that would take?" Valve didn't, though, and Counterstrike has spurred sales of HL immensely and improved its replayability beyond belief. I don't ask that BTS commits the changes we want, just that they let us know what can be done and what can't, so that we can direct our effort toward commiting these changes. In this manner, we can develop CM in numerous ways and thereby take the best qualities of open-source software and combine them with the best qualities of tightly structured, serious design. HL has an enormous community, partly because of the quality of the game, partly because Valve doesn't mind that the community tweak with the game a bit to produce varients.
  18. David, While I understand the precepts behind your speculation, the priniciples behind these additions are basic. I do program (I say this because most people start things out saying they don't) and I know that if BTS has a structure in place that accepts new vehicles, which I assume it must as hand-creating it for the 100(?)+ vehicles in the game would be silly, there may be a possibility to accomplish this. Don't misunderstand me by thinking I mean it is easy but I think it would be worthwhile. This structure would be necessarily complex for the AFVs, etc. as they need to take into account the myriad factors that CM is so loved for but they may not be so complex as to limit the addition of other, more novel objects (The wrecks and such that others have mentioned, for example). As to the structures, as the basic ruleset is in place, their addition may be easier. I can see difficulties involving their implementation during quick-battles, possibly by the AI and another dozen niggling issues that I haven't noticed. However, even if they can only be implemented in a PBEM setting (Like assault boats) it would be the fan base working on it and not the precious resources of BTS.
  19. So, uh, take the hamsters out of the blender, eh?
  20. I'd like to open this up by saying, every forum needs a bunch of grognards to keep it from degenerating into a, "I think CM would be better if we did just what I want." With every new guy positing the same thing. I remember BTS saying that they may add rare AFVs like the SturmTiger and Maus at a later date and I was wondering if this was the case? I was also wondering if they ever planned on adding noncombatant vehicles, (Trains, grounded planes, etc) and more building models? If BTS will not, is it possible that 3rd parties can (Not the AFVs, which require lots of stats and likely programming issues and maybe not the plain-jane noncombatant vehicles but at least the extra structures)? Also, my search was inconclusive, will there be an expansion for CM or is it patches till CM2? Oh, and how do you make a really good soufflé?
  21. There's a great mod for Half-Life called The Russian Front that models German and Russian city-fighting (mostly) during WWII. With a 32 player limit and no vehicles, though, we're going to have to wait for TF2 to come out and someone to create a WWII mod for it. http://www.planethalflife.com/borderline/mods/rfront/
  22. Kinda like what happened during WWII with that cruiser (USS Indianapolis) and the sharks, eh? Immediate and efficient resolution and rescue... [This message has been edited by Elijah Meeks (edited 08-17-2000).]
  23. Fionn, I think you're cold-blooded when it comes to marshall matters. In that aspect I think you take people off-guard. The same guys who would throw a company of CM troops into near-certain death find it hard to reconcile such thinking with the real world. Hell, I'm one of them, but I realize that it's true. Sherman said, "War is all hell," and he was right. He was the first modern general and he knew, as Shelby Foote says, that, "civilians are the backers-up of war" so he naturally took the war to them. Patton knew the cost of war and the fact that hard, bloody fighting brought quick resolution. These men got reputations for being cold-blooded SOBs, as well they should, but that doesn't make them wrong. All those Russians had families, as did every man who ever died, in war and out. We Americans haven't experienced catastrophic loss like those in Europe and Asia have since the Civil War, so please understand that our social skill to deal with catastrophic loss has atrophied. I guess we take everything to heart and in that aspect we embody the worst quality of young men, naivette, but I think we make up for it with the best, that of idealism.
  24. That's strange, as I've seen the exact opposite, shots that miss my target but smash others targets that get in the way or are in the wrong place at the wrong time. I can send you a PBEM movie demonstrating this very thing if you want to review it.
