1. I've just spent the last day sampling the delights of QB. Quite a few in actual fact. I've come across a few things that surprised me.

Firstly, for the overall cost of the King Tiger should I rate it? Everytime I have one I loose it early on. Bad tactics spring to mind.. I lost this one to a 76mm AT gun, (that I couldn't even spot) from about 350m. Second shot. First one bounced off, second shot penetrated the turret. I've not had much luck with them.

Secondly, I know the pros with the Hetzer, but I lost two in exactly the same way in the same battle. From a 81mm mortar. The shells presumably penetrating top armour as both exploded. Sure enough the mortar was credited with two hetzer kills. I know the debate over mortar effectiveness has been done to death but this surprised me I have to say.

Just one point to those involved, where the desert campaign primarily concentrated on '41 to early '44 this presumably means we are going to have to use the same units we get for Overlord. I can't see how this will feel authentic, even though the screenshots look stunning.

Sorry for the double post - bloody Netscape.

  3. Shatter, by new Pacific flyer, I take this to mean MS Combat Flight Sim II?

You can't go far wrong with it. It's the prettiest sim I've seen in ages. I don't know how realistic it is, but the graphics and sounds are amazing. Plus, fully supports Force Feedback and mulitplayer, whereas B17II doesn't. You need a decent machine to make the most of it though.

I've got an Athlon Tbird @900mhz and it simply flies, if you can pardon the pun.

  4. I was thinking about subscribing to their site. I remember way back when they tried to bring out a bi-monthly magazine. I subscribed to it to be told a few weeks later that they couldn't get the finance for it. They were very professional about it all though. Hell, I even got a refund!

I've been reading pages on their site for years. I have to say, I think it is (was) one of the best sim sites out there. Although lately, I'm wondering.. Their take on B17II. Hmm.. Seemed more like a plug than a non biased review. Will anyone here subscribe?

  5. Hey, I'm running into some complications when using the mod manager in conjuction with Marco's mods.

I would like to use both, so I start off with the mod manager and get this working fine. But say I want to use a specific mod that Marco has produced, I have to use the batch file to sort it out. It isn't really saving me anytime by doing this. Is there any way of combining the two things via the mod manager?

  6. Just one thing. Would it be possible via a patch or something to enable the user to group select with the mouse. I like to be able to organise my mods so that I know what I have installed and when. At present with over 500 megs worth the list is quite long as you can imagine, and moving each one up or down the list is time consuming.

But thanks for all the work, this is helping a lot.

  7. Okay, weird maybe, but I was thinking, reading some threads below, when you hear about a tiny M5 knocking out a King Tiger etc etc, how does the relatively small shell actually 'kill' something as big and as powerful as that.

Presumably a lucky immobilizing engine shot, or the crew are killed or maimed. Was this the case? Maybe a morbid question in some respects but just curious.

  8. I use Redhotant 24/7. They've been reliable recently, although I use ISDN and the second channel isn't available to me so I can only get 7-10k a second instead of double that. Still way better than 56k mind you.

I would recommend them at the moment but there techy support is non-existant. You need to know what you're doing basically. www.redhotant.com

David, may I ask, do Demon support ISDN PPP do you know?

  9. Hopefully, I haven't spoken too soon, but so far so good. I've not had one crash with the new patch. I've been online for nearly 5 hours.

Interestingly, I'm now running Win98 SE. I had a pretty clean WinME beforehand but I couldn't get to the bottom of the crashes, so I downgraded, so to speak.

Dan et al, have you experience more problems with ME than 98?? Makes me wonder. The TCP side of things seems to take longer to pick up when you enter the address, but it seems far more stable.

    Anyway, thanks for your help.

  10. I have not been so fortunate.. I managed to get part way through a battle against the AI and thought I had the problem solved until I went up against a colleague via tcp. Same issues for me. Occasional sporadic lockups. No obvious pattern. Like trying to find a needle in a haystack - very frustrating.

Clutching at straws I decided to format my drive and reinstall from scratch. Problemo.... Arse.. I've lost my ME serial number.. Bummer. Back to 98 for the time being. So here I am, 98 SE back on my new AthlonTB and I hope to install CM shortly with the patch. I won't have anything else on my machine but CM and DX8, to avoid any software implications. Of course, I still have to download the relevant drivers so I guess I'll be a while yet.

One thing of interest, my machine is running at a constant 49 degrees. Quite hot I believe but official statement from AMD is that this is way below the danger levels.

    Any feedback, anyone??
