  1. I decided to run through this epic campaign once again.. Am I mad? Well, slightly yes, but I appreciate the scale of this campaign and couldn't resist. I've been practising a lot and thought I'd chance my new skills.

Although there are parts of this campaign I still absolutely hate, (RR and School of Hard Knocks in particular) I decided on a different route this time which gave me a different mission. I couldn't bare the thought of Razerback Ridge again (brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it!) so I opted for a different path. I still think a couple of the maps have been designed by the Devil but the overall campaign has been much more enjoyable this time round. Albeit, enjoyable with a LOT of saves.

Things I have done or tried to do differently this time:-

I used my artillery sparingly and have attempted to bombard points of interest first.

I valued my observers and have kept them out of harms way (mostly) :)

I have tried to keep my leaders and HQ's in command and alive - this really helps!

I kept my squads hidden that weren't in use (really important for School).

I used fire and maneuver significantly. Enemy artillery concentrations obliterate platoons with ease otherwise.

I have tried to use combined arms - I support my tanks with infantry where possible.

I recon the area first where possible by splitting squads.

I have kept tried to keep my 60mm mortar teams with infantry platoons, likewise for the machine gun teams, and let the mortars target by themselves.

I try to soften up the area first with suppression. I use the machine guns and advance with infantry under smoke where possible.

So overall I have learnt some new tactics. I think for the most part it has helped me progress. The only mission I drew has been School, but the others have been total victories to date. I am now part way through the final mission, which is a bitch.

    Wish me luck!

  2. If you want good defense check out the Courage and Fortitude campaign. Designed with defensive positions in mind and it's one tough nut to crack. Part of the problem against another human opponent of course, by its very nature is the ad hoc design. You cannot easily predetermine your defensive positions using the supplied maps even with the help of the map preview. So you go into battle more or less blind. In this situation I would say it's nearly always going to favour the side with numerical superiority, given enough time of course.

  3. I think this has to be my favourite mod to date. I love the ambience - the single dog barking, the occasional bird noise, crickets. It's so realistic. Even the vehicles are growing on me now too. Amazing how much this improves the game in my opinion. Just goes to show what you can achieve with sound effects.

  4. Yeah, it is a good mod...now I am just putting finishing touches on all my sounds...zips, ricochets and explosions are perfect...used a combination of every sound mod released. Got the gun fire almost to where I want it too. And I can't say enough about those new scream files.

    Mord.

Are you going to release that for public consumption?

  5. I just wanted to bump this thread again. This mod really is quite something guys. If you haven't already done so, please try it. Every battle I now play sounds like something out of Band of Brothers :D

Please keep up the progress with this mod Stephsen! It will be very interesting to see what you can do with the Commonwealth effects when that comes along shortly.

Oh and I did I already mention... The incommmmmming artillery simply rocks! Love it!

  6. I'd imagine it will take a while to upload being such a big file. But I will just add that I think these are amazing sounds now that I've played with them for a bit longer. Absolutely incredible work well done.

The MG42 sounds authentic now, and actually had me ducking for cover! The Garand type effect sounds cool, pity the K98 sounds the same, (although I realise this isn't your fault). Love the sound of the BAR too, really clunky. Love it. But I still think the artillery rounds are the best bit, love those rounds incoming. It feels like a different game now, but in a good way ;) The ricochets and bullets whizzing over your head are superb as well.

One thing, the vehicle sounds. I think they're pretty good actually, but they could perhaps do with being a touch louder - they often get drowned out against the background small arms. Just a touch though, you don't want them over-powering the other sounds. But that's just my opinion. Overall, I'm really impressed. Cheers!

  7. I've just had a very quick go! I think it's pretty stunning truth be told, certainly what I've heard so far. The sound effects generally are very well balanced, the only negative criticism I have is the crickets/ambience volume is perhaps a tad too high for my liking. But I love the artillery incoming and smaller shells exploding. Plus the US small arms seem more authentic to me now. I have yet to hear any vehicle movement noises, so will give that a shot next.

Have you played with the voices at all? If not, I can actually hear them properly for the first time lol.. I have Mord's voices installed which seem to work really well with your mod.

  8. Both games are fun and worthy of investment. I believe the lag experienced in Kursk has been addressed in a patch. But it is pretty intensive. But then so is Normandy. In my opinon Normandy is the better of the two games, being much more of an authentic simulation.

If you want a quick ten minutes at a time, then go Kursk and enjoy the beautiful graphics and sound effects.

If you want to learn a more long-term and authentic battlefield simulation go for Normandy.

If you feel flush, get both :D

  9. I had to laugh when I read your post - sorry. I can just imagine how you feel, especially twice :D

As John1966 said, it's going to be really difficult on that sort of terrain over those distances. Best bet is flanking - send several scattered groups of tanks left and right and use plenty of smoke. Those 75's aren't going to cause any trouble until you can get close and behind. The Tiger turrets are quite slow compared to the Shermans, so you could get lucky if you are quick enough. I had a Tiger knocked out by the first shot of a 57mm AT gun, so they can die quickly too. It just depends on the round and how close you are.

  10. I love the option of both but campaigns are the only real way I am able to immerse myself fully into the concept of the game. The very nature of the linked missions and the the way casualties and losses are tracked means I can sink myself into the game. I'm not one of these people who can spend half hour on the game and then leave it either, I have to spend a good few hours at it to really get my teeth into it.

  11. I'm 37 and I play primarily WEGO. It's the style of gameplay I prefer and always have done since the very first days. It's much less chaotic and I love being able to use the replay to see exactly where that shot came from. Plus I can make a brew inbetween turns. Maybe it's partly something to do with the fact CMBx1 started out life as WEGO, that we have got used to it.

I also agree with what a lot of the others have said. But I do play RT occasionally; it tends to be for the tiny scenarios or small QB's. You do have more finite control over your forces using the realtime engine there's no denying that aspect. But it just doesn't do it for me. I can't stand the thought of a large, important campaign battle in RT - what a nightmare!

  12. He he. :D I am crafting the Commonweath campaign and it was originally my plan to have a second 5 or 6-mission campaign that followed the Canadian North Shore Regiment from the landings through to Carpiquet. The maps are all done but there's no way in hell I could finish the Brit campaign in good time and do that. Unless the module is delayed for a while and nobody wants that! The 'Road to Carpiquet' campaign will be uploaded to the Repository some time after the module is released.

Good man, look forward to it!
