  1. Actually, it was the British 59th division that launched the assault on Grimbosq.
  2. Makjager was kind enough to scan several pages from his book "The History of the 12th SS Panzer division "HitlerJugend" and e-mail them to me, this being reference material for an upcoming Op, and one particular passage caught my eye: "On August 6th, from 18.40 hours on, the 271.inf-div observed enemy rocket fire in the Grimbosq (9km west of Bretteville-sur Laize) and Thury-Harcourt sectors." What types of rockets did the allies use?

  4. On August 6th / 7th the British XII forced a crossing of the Orne opposite the towns of Grimbosq and Brieux. Counterattacked by Kampfgruppe Wunsche, the Brits were pressed back towards the river, but eventually held thanks in large part to their artillery support. A good account of the battle can be found in "Steel inferno", which provides good OOB info on Kampfgruppe Wunsche. What I need to know is what other units were present. Which German unit(s) defended that section of the Orne river line prior to KG Wunsche's arrival? On the British side I know that the 176th infantry brigade was involved, as was the 107th & 147th R.A.C. (reference this site) Any others? Thanks in advance
  5. I would suggest you look here , here , here and finally here .

  9. I am assuming that the Coax MG is #1 on the list due to the mobility and protection is gets from the tank. If so, then shouldn't MG armed HTs also get a slot? Say below tank mounted coax but above the standard tripod MG34/42/M1919.
  10. Sounds about right. Nebs, and rocket artillery in general, were mainly used for deep strikes, such as counter battery, while tube arty worked closer to the front line. Targeting a neb barrage 350 meters away from your troops is asking for trouble, and to be honest you are very lucky only two landed close to your guys.
  11. No, a bump to thank Jon Although I'd welcome contributions from others on this subject, I think everything I need is listed in the post above. About the only thing missing is what they had for breakfast, but I'm sure you know that as well
  12. Yet another one for the proving grounds. After the little diversion to Normandy with '2 bridges too far' I now return back to Brittany with 'Blouveaut'. Once again we have elements of the US 6th armored, this time 'C' company / CCA battling the 3rd Bn / 897th Regt / 266th ID for control of the town and surrounding countryside. Medium sized, 45 turns, around 4000 points combined.
  13. Another one for the Proving grounds. This one is an improved version of my "2 Bridges too far" scenario. Both side's OOBs and briefings have been updated, as well as a few minor tweaks to the map. Huge, 55 turns, around 4500 points per side. Units involved are 2nd Battalion the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (the "Argylls") vs 10th SS Panzer "Frundsberg" division, and depicts the battle for Gavrus during Operation Epsom. Special thanks to JonS for his help with the British OOB.
  14. What artillery units (Corp or Army level) were in support of the British units in Op Epsom. I can figure out the divisional stuff, but I need help with the higher level units. Also, at what level would you find the CW 4.2" mortar. Organic to the Brigades, or were they divisional assets? Thank you
  15. In my opinion the one vehicle that best resembles the Sommua (in CMBO) is the Puma. You could get the Hotchkiss, which would give you the same gun (IIRC) but it is much smaller and slower.
  16. Behold! According to the organization section, field artillery regiments in 1944 were equipped with towed 25pdrs.
  17. The German high command was planning Wacht am Rhein in August / September? That is news to me. If forces were going west it was in response to the collapse of the front in Normandy, which I will concede would have also taken units from the Italian front.
  18. But if you haven't launched Dragoon, you haven't captured Marseille. And if you don't hold Marseille and haven't cleared the routes from there northward, you can't push more supplies into NWE. The Normandy beaches were already delivering all they could and until Antwerp was captured and functioning, that was all they had north of the Loire. As stated earlier in this thread, the whole justification of Dragoon was to provide logistical support for all the divisions waiting in the wings to be brought onto the Continent. Eisenhower wanted to build up his forces as quickly as possible, but just having troops around was no good unless they could be supplied. Michael </font>
  19. Agreed, but wouldn't (most of) those assets head east? Keep in mind that this was post Bargraton, when the Germans were scrapping up reserves to fill in the hole that once was army group center. They were also about to lose another huge slice of men and machines in the Romanian debacle. But wouldn't the switch of forces also warrent a switch of logistics as well? Assume the Germans do withdraw into the alpine passes, reducing their forces accordingly. The allies could do the same, keeping a skeleton force in place, while the vast majority of men and supplies go to NWE. Afterall, that is the point you and Michael have stressed, that taking the fight directly to Germany is what counts. I'm arguing that by breaking open the Italian front you free up the very thing you need to really drive the war into Germany.
  20. I'm still not convinced that that is an ecomomical use of forces in terms of achieving the strategic goal of defeating Germany. And that after all is the goal. The fastest way to liberate the most people is to force an early surrender. Michael </font>
  21. For the same reasons, although on a much larger scale, of why the allies landed an invasion force at Anzio. By the time Dragoon was launched the front in Italy ran more or less from Leghorn to Rimini. That is still deep inside Italy. Threatening the LOCs might have forced the Germans to quit the Gothic line and the Po valley. Granted, it is a stretch, but it wouldn't have been something the Germans could ignore.
