  1. Hi DD: If you found the Performa to be too slow to play the game, then as Barticus said, networking to to an iMac isn't going to help. It *will* help during the movie creation phase, however. The faster iMac should pick up the job of creating the movie, then send it to the Performa. In order to network the two machines, your best set-up will be to use an Ethernet hub or switch and two cables. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Deadly Dave: If I connect up to the imac with a cable will it work ie will the performa lean on the imac and allow itself to be piggy backed or will the performa drag its tail <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
  2. Oh, look! Another Mac OS X thread I can jump into! Apple announced today that Mac OS 10.1 will be released on Saturday. Once again, I'm looking for BTS's words on how CMBB - and the original CMBO - will play in the new OS. I'll state once again, that as an owner of CMBO, I am more than willing to pay an upgrade fee for the effort required to make CMBO work in OS X. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by karsten: Has anyone had a chance to try CM on a developer version of 10.1? Are there any improvments? Still sad that there will never be a carbon or cocoa version of CM :-(<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
  3. Glad to read that you've sorted it out! Playing via TCP/IP is also possible between a Mac and Windows machine. Just ask if you need help figuring it out! <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR> First off, thank you for the fast response! But in truth my buddy and I are rookies.... we never choose the play by e-mail option and were sending each other saved games. Geesh, it was hard to admit this..... thanks again for all your offers to help.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
  4. I regularly play via TCP/IP matches over the internet against my Windows-using opponent using my Macintosh. We have played matches with both he and I hosting the game, with no problems. It's also entirely possible to network a Mac and Windows machine together when they're in the same room; with appropriate networking hardware, of course. If you need any help making it work, just ask! Toad <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by midwich: [QB}With Combat Mission, can I play Windows users via TCP/IP? I realise I need the right dynamic addy, but am not sure how compatible the two platforms are for this amazing-sounding game. Also, am I right in thinking that right now this would be a 1-to-1 connection? Thanks for your help! midwich[/QB]<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
  5. Add my name to the list of people who want to play CM in Mac OS X. As I've mentioned before, I am willing to pay an upgrade fee in recognition to the significant amount of work that would be required to update the game to the latest Mac OS. Toad <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by aka_tom_w: How many of us want to use OSX and play CM? <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
  6. Your memory allocation to Combat Mission may be too low for the size of the games you're playing. I increased the "preferred" setting of mine to 64 MB long ago. You wrote that you're using a fairly recent machine, so you probably have enough RAM to also increase it. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by lucero1148: Hi , I am play testing a huge scenario with my co-designer and we have come across a Mac error type 11<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
  7. Please add my voice to the OS X owners who look forward to a Carbon / Cocoa version of CM and CM2. In the mean time, I continue to enjoy CM from 9.1.
  8. Creative Labs has suggested that their Soundblaster Live for Macintosh may start shipping in early March. I'm definately interested in it. I'm curious if other Mac CM players are too, and if BTS might consider supporting the advanced features of the card in CM1 or the planned CM2. ------------------ -- Toad Ontario, Canada
  9. Mac Mac: 13 PC: 14 On a related topic, I think BTS would find value in knowing exactly what hardware people play Combat Mission on. Me: Apple G3 blue tower, 400 MHz, 256 MB RAM, OS 9.1, factory video & audio. [This message has been edited by Toad (edited 02-27-2001).]

  13. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Madmatt: I see the issue. When a unit takes a crew hit it automatically buttons up. The M3A1 can't fire while its buttoned though, the gunner is behind the gun mount it is assumed. The TacAi will never UN-Button but you can do it for him. Just give the un-button command and the M3A1 will again fire its MG even with a crew hit. Madmatt<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Thanks. I'm having the trouble with a British Wasp flamethrower. It has one casualty and will not unbutton or accept a "target" command.

  15. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Freyland: and then see your efforts carried out on the battlefield? Did we not all "ooh" and "ahh" about watching the films over and over again, just to see that cool explosion, or figure out how FOW just screwed us, or just to admire the reactions of the Tac AI? How many of you spent huge amounts of time making the "perfect setup"? Using TCP takes away all of that. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> I agree. Not that the outstanding work that BTS and company put into this is for naught. I applaud their efforts and say, "Knock 'em dead!" to everyone who wants to play the TCP/IP way. But I would miss not being able to review every angle of that perfect tank kill. ------------------ -- Toad Ontario, Canada
  16. I've played with "mods" for shooter games like Unreal Tournament. They're fun, but I always end up returning to play the "original." Playing with other people is more interesting than playing against the computer. It's always easier to agree to play "classic" than to decide what "mods" to allow. So, even if Combat Mission did support dozens of "mods", I would find myself back playing the classic way eventually ... However, I do long for using Combat Mission's accuracy and detail to experiment with historical "what if" scenarios. "What if" Germany's "E" series of tank designs, like the Maus, saw the battlefield? "What if" the Soviets and Allies didn't agree how to divide Germany and went to battle over it? I would find many interesting hours exploring these historical possibilities. And, to finally settle the question of who's truly the better player, without excuses of "your nation's units were better than mine", the option to play like-vs-like would be fun. ------------------ -- Toad Ontario, Canada

  18. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Jaded: Any new news on this? With Ncrawler's 1.4 pack out, I'm trying to figure a way to get it installed on my Mac....<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Hi Jaded, You can use the Windows sounds on your Mac if you're willing to spend a little effort to convert them and use Res Edit to get them into the appropriate sound resource files. I'm using some of ncrawler's sounds on my Mac. There is a slight problem that the Windows WAV files are recorded at higher volumes than the stock sounds in the game. So they can sound a little exagerated. I haven't found a tool to easily reduce the volume of WAV files yet, although the author of SoundApp did reply to my question to say he's planning to implement the feature some day. Here's the basic how-to of getting the WAV files into your Mac Combat Mission. 1) Get Res Edit from Apple http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-10239-100-859800.html?tag=st.dl.10005_103_1.lst.td_859800 and SoundApp Norman Franke http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-10216-100-2373098.html?tag=st.dl.10005_103_1.lst.td_2373098 2) Use the "Convert" feature of SoundApp to change the WAV files into Macintosh system sounds. 3) Make a copy of the Combat Mission sound file you want to edit with ResEdit. Keep the copy in a safe place, just in case. 4) Open the Combat Mission sound resource you want to edit with Res Edit. 5) Open the Mac-converted sound you want to insert with ResEdit. 6) Highlight the sound ID of the sound you want to add. Do a "Get Info." Change the resource ID number to the ID of the original sound you want to replace. The do a "Copy." 7) Highlight the original sound and delete it. Then do a "Paste." The new sound should now be in the Combat Mission sound resource. 8) Save the CM sound resource, and try your new sounds. ------------------ -- Toad Ontario, Canada
  19. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Joeri: Maybe it also works by walking captured troops over them but I don't think that is ethically correct. 20. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by howardb: I think you guys are missing a point here. The website Battlefront.com is their sales office, they don't sell their products in stores so basically everybody that's interested in buying CM has to come by this site, could they sell more copies with a profesional looking website? I think so. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Precisely. I am confident that Madmatt has the experience and awareness to recognize the superiority of clean, simple Web design when building a business Web page. I am looking forward to the changes the new Webmaster has planned. I am sure we will one morning discover a new Battlefront.com composed of well-structured, clean, and simple pages which navigate quickly and communicate their content efficiently. New visitors to here will find what they are looking for amid a minimum of clutter and lead to more sales. ------------------ -- Toad Ontario, Canada

  22. A lot of people who frequent this message board are quick to respond to questions with valuable, informative and knowledgable answers. I have learned a great deal by taking the time to ask questions. Unfortunately, there are a few times when some one asks a question that has been discussed before. Sometimes it was discussed last month, other times it was last year. Sometimes when that happens, the author gets the words, "Do a search!" thrown in their face. The search feature is a powerful tool. It can allow you to read the past discussions of others on topics you have only just thought of yourself. Often, the search feature comes up with threads full of comments from the BTS development team themselves. But the search feature isn't perfect. Sometimes you can't find an answer simply because the words you use are different from the words used in past threads. Or your question is only briefly addressed. Or you don't completely understand the answer. Or you want to ask the question in a different way than the original author did. Or maybe you just plain couldn't find it. I would like to encourage the people of this fine message board to not be so harsh with questions, be they from a new user or veteran, new topic or discussed to death. The search feature is only one means of learning answers. The real value of this message board comes from you guys and the opportunity for new Combat Mission'ers to communicate with you. In fact, there have been a few questions raised that I wouldn't have thought to ask and search for if some one else hadn't posted to ask them again. I was glad they took the time to post their question, else I would have never thought it myself. If a question is asked that has been discussed to death already, then take pride in your high knowledge of this busy place and share that fact. Don't punish the author with ridicule. Tell them, "Hey - I remember that being discussed about two months ago. Try searching for it. Lots of good information there!" Or live life on the Wild side and actually take the time to write an answer. The purpose of a message board is to encourage questions and discussions. In the end, a new message thread about a topic you've already read about doesn't do any harm to you. If you're not interested, then don't click on it! ------------------ -- Toad Ontario, Canada
  23. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Michael emrys: This concern has wafted through what I presently use for a brain four or five times, but I admit I haven't really sat down and worked through all the possibilities yet. My hasty reaction is to say that the presence of armor (and maybe certain other kinds of specialty troops) should effect the global morale. Having armor should boost it; losing your armor should hurt it. Seeing the enemy's armor should reduce it. Seeing the enemy's armor when you don't have any should reduce it more. Especially when we start to get into pre-1943 combat this should be true. Bumping the thread up for further discussion. Michael<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Some quick thoughts ... I don't think it should affect Global morale. Unless a squad could see a friendly tank, or witness it's effects, I don't think it would bring them any significant enthusiasm. How could a tank that some people can see and other people can't benefit the morale of everyone? On the other hand, perhaps the presence of friendly tanks might improve the morale of squads local to it. The same effect as, say, a HQ with the "morale" heart symbol. ------------------ -- Toad Ontario, Canada
  24. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by chrisl: With the impending public release of MacOS X beta, is there any word on compatibility with CM? <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> OS X will include "Classic" mode for running pre-OS X programs. I don't know if such will be implemented in the beta, or how the Classic mode works with games. OS X is certainly very big on Open GL as it's graphics API of choice. BTS has mentioned that implementing Open GL into Combat Mission is one of the many things on their to-do list. ------------------ -- Toad Ontario, Canada
