1. Matt,

A bunch of medical terms here...are they very serious? I hope Steve (the other one that is) is recovering soon.

Lewis, the game has just gone 3 turns and we had barely exchanged a few shots. Nothing conclusive yet.

I am in the hospital right now, so it may be more fair to you if I forefit,

    as it is quite serious.

But when CM2 comes out, I think I can use the soundtrack cd of "Hunt for the Red October". But afaik, the chorus is not official Soviet Navy song.

  4. Hi Wilhammer,

Thanks for your informative post. Keep us informed about your talks. Show him CM and this board some day so he could be assimulated. tongue.gif (Why do CM Borg need to be summoned nowadays?)

BTS, I think smoke concealment of Allied tanks should be really toned down a bit.

  5. I realize there are quite a number of museums around London which are related to CM. Can anyone point out where I can find some kinda travel guide?

If I can find money and time, probably early next year, I would love to pay a visit on my own.

  6. I knew about the longish before BG2 is out since I read the CGO review before purchase. 6 months? Oh...

BTW, I have issued "non-repsonsive" warning to my fellow PBEM opfor.

I love the PPD (Plasmaic Pulasr Device) in SFC2, it is so cool. I can't wait to see how fighters and PFs get mixed up in the full version.

MGS is Metal Gear Solid (actual it is a port of Metal Gear Solid Integral) which is a Playstation game port. Pretty cool, kinda like Thief/Thief 2.

MSG is the stuff to take when eating in a Chinese resturant.

  10. Yep, infantry in building is real meat grinder. I remember at early time (Fionn? BTS?) that you really need at least 3-1 to win a small building.

My solution: fire and firepower -- shoot the building, not the enemy.

Have a tank/GMC/SPA are great, for they are relatively more accurate. If you don't have them handy, try oba, infantry guns and large mortars also work fine. Flamethrower units or flame-throwing afv are not so good for you have go < 50m for a hit but if they survive, it effectively flushes the rats out of their hole (sorry, can't help, I really hate those enemy hidden in a building tongue.gif ).

The last choices would be using bombs, tnt packs, etc, for they have to move real close to the target building. However, I find hollow charges : recoiless, zook or fraust do not work well against buildings. But firing from the building is another matter. biggrin.gif

  11. Here is one:

"Tank Killing : Anti-Tank Warfare by Men and Machines" by Ian V. Hogg, ISBN: 1885119402

    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1885119402/102-2003895-2189745

I find it is rather comprehensive and discuss the development of tactics and equipment for tank killing purposes from WW1 to nowadays.

"U.S. Infantry Weapons of World War II" by Bruce N. Canfield, ISBN: 0917218671

    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0917218671/102-2003895-2189745

It is rather expensive but it does have sections on rifle grenades and boozooka. Quite a lot of photos.

"Germany's Infantry Weapons 1939-45" by Terry Gander, ISBN: 1861261810

    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1861261810/102-2003895-2189745

Here is another one but not yet arrived

"Panzerfaust : And Other German Infantry Anti-Tank Weapons" by Wolfgang Fleischer, ISBN: 0887406726

    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0887406726/102-2003895-2189745

I suggest you may wish to visit the CM reading list website or search here for a number of discussions on hollow charges, tank guns and infantry AT weapon effectiveness

  12. I played a QB against the PO last Fri, my German combined forces holding a village against American armor attacks.

The panzers, 1 STuG H, 1 STuG IIIG and 1 Wribelwind (sp), went out of business when the American are vis but when the American panzers entered the village, my troops hidden behind houses killed them with 'fraust. It was a very tough battle and iirc, one squad had done particular well that they got 2 Shermans, of which one was a M4A3W(75). I finally got a tactical victory.

It is quite hard sometimes to motivate your men to move in for a kill. YMMV. But it is better to lay ambushes.

  13. A lot of opinions have been raised, I am late, as usual, but I would like to put my $0.02

Appearently, BTS ppl are trying to solve 2 problems we have been discussing lately, "gamey recon" and "cherry picking".

I second the idea of decreasing the "fast" speed of light vechiles, especially jeeps and trucks and lower their effectiveness in recon, instead of just raising the costs of these vechicles.

I would like to see is a random TO&E in the force choice rather than generic force types such as "combined arms", etc. It would be fine if CM gives a company of Volksgrenadiers with random-generated supporting heavy weapons and a random number of STuGs when I choose "Heer infrantry" given date "Jan 1945" and 1000 points, say. It is far more easier for me to run a qb I want rather than handpicking all the time. I have admit I don't sometime like "borg shopping" very much for CM does not seem to use all the "money" granted.

If I have to do the shopping on my own, I would go with the Rarity Option. As a non-grog, I am not sure if my picks are hisotrical or not and I am not aware that Puma was very rare until I read this thread. Or I would think, humm, this vechicle is cool, let's "buy" 2 for my panzer recon.

If all the proposed changes would be made, I think it would make CM even more infantry-intensive in long term, in QB at least. As I understand, it is a design-decision to leave out C&C in vechicles, unlike other games like TotP and PitS, I am not sure if this impact would be good or not to see less vechciles in qb.

    Regards,

    Griffin.

  14. From my little experiences, Tiger is no longer a uber tank I once thought. (spoiler below)...

    .

    .

    .

    .

    .

    .

    .

    .

"Villars Bocage" -- Most of the time, the game has to be restarted due to shots from 17-pdr and sometime Staurt, especially if your Tiger is standing still and exposed. Most Shermans, including Firefly VCs, often get the first shot. I am not sure if it is due to the old problem with "running-crew-pirority" for I have not paid a visit after 1.03 patch.

"Magnificant Seven" -- Another tank-heavy scenario. I find that even a JadaPanther is vulnerable to 75mm frontal shots if the shot happen to shoot at any distance shorter than 500m. Your panzers is extermely endangered if it comes anywhere down from 400m. I think this draws the "thin red line" against Allied tanks.

The third one I would bring out is -- but I forgot the name -- a scenario between Polish armor and 2nd SS Panzer Division where 2nd SS was trying to escape thru the exit zone. It was another fun "tank shooter". I divided the Polish into 2 groups, one in the woods directly towards a hill and other moves towards the left flank of the hill along the road. When the Germans showed up on the hill, including Tigers, Panthers, various STuGs, and Marders, a sub-500m shooting began. I lost half of my tanks but the hill was littered with twisted, burning metals under German brand. My "calvary" marched victorously towards hill, sweeping German infantry as it goes.

    .

    .

    .

I am trying to point out that German panzers lose their edges when it comes down to distance shorter than 500m. It is even worse when the Allied has the numeric superority and the flank.

    Good luck and happy hunting.

  15. Well, I read from a Taiwan-published defense mag that most snipers there are vegetarians for vegetarians leaves "no traces of smell" for enemy to search for. Anybody can elaborate this one?

Any movie question -- is the guy in "Clear and Present Danger" a sniper or sharpshooter? Does US military conduct "training" like in the movie?

Is H&K PSG-1 have better range than other rifles out there?

  16. Warning: Total Off-topic ahead!

I remember I read about an WW2 German unit known as Z.b.v. 800 which was active in the EF. I recently get the book "The German Order of Battle : Infantry in World War II" but cannot find the unit in the book, whereas some other Z.b.v units are covered.

Can anyone shed some lights on this one?

    Thanks in advanced.

  17.
quote:
In the East, if you used captured armor and needed parts, you couldn't use German machined ones and had to canibalize.

My point is, with reference to the original poster, they needed the parts for their captured equipment, not their standard-issued ones. I don't think the captured equipment intended to hold for long either. They could be used for surprise and confuse the enemy or infiltrate behind the enemy lines.

quote:
I can't picture any situation where you could maintain a functional force of armor by having to not only kill the right tanks, but not have any more damage-in-need-of-repair occur to your tanks while you do so.

    Thanks for pointing that out.

  18. I heard somebody has his QB oppoment sending over 15 flamwthowers at him in a foggy night . That was bad frown.gif

    I propose these:

    1. Agree over the parameters used in generating QB -- espeically on the type of force composition (combined arms/armored/etc) and nationality (US/UK/Canadian/etc)

    2. Use "Random" on force selection most of the time.

    3. Or may be, BTS would add special pools like "75-rules" or "unit templates" to QB selection smile.gif

    4. If the players really want to choose units on their own, add rarity factors to the system.

    5. Play only with reputable PBEMers (like me tongue.gif)

I know it may be hard to implement or they may not fend off all cherry-pickers.

    My $.02.

  19.
quote:
2) Spare Parts

I would have a little reservations about this point. I have been reading "Villers Bocage: Through the Lens" recently and it is said that the KOed half-tracks were looted mainly because the Germans needed spare parts from them. My impression is: if this happened in WF, especially late at war, it was bigger in EF. tongue.gif

    My 2cents.

  20. Muldune,

Wait till you start PBEMing (or TCP/IP later), you experience "addiction" without drugs. Trust me. wink.gif

BTW, don't worry about that Borg thing, he/she/it seems to maintain a list of who has been assimulated or not, or who is borg-slayer.

In the meantime, enjoy food, rest, or normal life while you still can.

    Oh, btw, welcome aboard.

  21. Now that is something refreshing from the interview about TCP/IP play:

quote:
SG: Slow, but steady progress. We pretty much had it on hold for the first two months of CM's release due to the need/desire to fix, tweak, and enhance the initial release. That is behind us for the most part, so Charles now has time to focus on TCP/IP. We will most likely give a better sense of how we are doing in the end of September.

Unfortunately, it is sad to hear the sequel to "Over the Reich", "Whistling Death" (Japanese nickname to F4U Corsair), is dead.
