  1. Hotseat is where two people are playing on the same computer. I think what you're after is a PBEM, Play By E-Mail. =) David ------------------ They lost all of their equipment and had to swim in under machine gun fire. Safe? What do you expect? Houses aren't designed to withstand high explosive, you know. Of course they're not safe. > Every one of them crumbles to the ground when hit and this is not realistic, nor does it provide a better gaming experience. Why shouldn't they crumble to the ground? Why isn't this realistic? Granted, CM isn't 100% realistic, but where did you get the impression that a house should be a safe place when someone is shelling it? I think the problem here, is that when a shell hits a house, it looks like no damage is taken. Then, some time later, it suddenly gives way. What you've got to understand is that with every shell, a large chunk of that house is going to disappear – it's just a complicated thing to represent in the game. If you could see what's happening to the house in reality, you'd start to think about moving your men as soon as the first shells hit. 3. Call me deadpan, but I was kidding. As for Major MacPherson, I've got the program on video, I watched it last night, and I shall provide a transcript when I get the chance. All I shall say for now is that he doesn't make a very convincing Scot with his posh English accent. Oh, and the whole program wasn't devoted to him, he just appeared a couple of times between various other people. 4. Oddball, that's a sound channel issue. There's a limit to the number of sounds the game will play at once, depending on the specification of your computer. I think it's more to do with processor speed than RAM, but I do know it's variable (I never have that problem, for example). You're suggesting that because you paid money for the game, BTS must continue working on it until you're happy? You paid for the groundbreaking, incredibly detailed, absorbing and generally wonderful game you already have. You'll get fancier buildings in CM2. 6. Matchbox Product Announcement The Second World War saw air power come into its own. Swarms of German aircraft unleashed fire and death upon the British populace, while Allied forces struck back against Hitler and his evil minions with even bigger, more powerful four-engined bombers. Soldiers in battle were constantly harried by sleek new fighter-bombers, and by the end of the war, German ground forces could barely move for fear of being pounced upon by American and British planes firing powerful guns and rockets. To commemorate the 58th anniversary of the middle of this momentous conflict, Matchbox is proud to announce a new set of highly detailed and realistic die-cast model aircraft. No collector or enthusiast will want to be without these fine reproductions of some of the Second World War's most renowned and feared flying machines. From the squadrons of the Nazi Luftwaffe comes the formidable Arado Ar68G fighter-bomber, which terrorised the British mainland and Allied soldiers throughout the war. Representing the British is the powerful Fairey Battle, the backbone of their bomber force. Also reproduced are the feared Soviet Polikarpov I-15 and Japanese Mitsubishi A5M (known to the Allies as "Claude"), and topping off the collection is the most feared aircraft of all, America's excellent Brewster F2A Buffalo. This fine set is strictly a limited edition, so order now! ------------------ They lost all of their equipment and had to swim in under machine gun fire. 7. I'm on a Mac, and I got a crackly sound problem on one, single map. It was one I'd put together myself, and whenever I hovered low over a sound source, it would crackle or distort in some other highly irritating fashion. Have you tried different maps, or just the one? David ------------------ They lost all of their equipment and had to swim in under machine gun fire. 8. I'm in a bit of a hurry just now, but in reference to Croda's comments – it is a myth that the British and Canadians had it easy during the Normandy landings. In some areas it was comparable to Utah beach, in being relatively unopposed. In other areas they took heavy casualties. They didn't have it as bad as Omaha beach, but that doesn't mean they had it easy. David By the way, my signature refers to the British landings. ------------------ They lost all of their equipment and had to swim in under machine gun fire. 9. I have certainly exaggerated the shading, and this results in a more rugged appearance. I think the faces would look a bit out of place on civilians, but they seem to work rather well as soldiers! =) David ------------------ They lost all of their equipment and had to swim in under machine gun fire. 10. Well, you see, the Peng thread has been moving a bit too quickly for my liking these days. I suddenly realised that the longer I abstained from it, the more imaginative I became. Then a few days ago I spent a whole 12 hours without visiting, and I was sitting scribbling with my graphics tablet, and hey, what's this? I'd suddenly created a set of mods for Combat Mission! So there you have it: Prolonged exposure to the Peng thread really is harmful, and visitors should be presented with a warning to this effect. They should immediately return to Combat Mission and proceed to shoot people and blow things up, which is inherently much safer. =) David ------------------ They lost all of their equipment and had to swim in under machine gun fire. 12. I'm starting to get the impression that this hamster stuff isn't a joke any more, and CM2 really WILL have hamsters. 13. I'm awfully relieved I've finally managed to get rid of the original faces... they're so bizarrely ugly... the guys who did them must have very distorted minds... what's that you say, rune? Two of them are actually you and Bill Wilder? Ummm, oh really, I was just saying how sorry I was to replace them, considering how handsome they all are! =) David ------------------ They lost all of their equipment and had to swim in under machine gun fire. 14. This is just a 3D problem. If you're looking at the top floor of a building from an angle, you can't see the ground immediately behind it – your vision is blocked for maybe 20 yards behind the building. So when you're placing a waypoint, it won't move smoothly between the building and the ground around it – it'll jump between the top floor and the ground 20 yards away. The solution is as Daveman says – use the top-down view, so that you see things in 'map' form. That said, I prefer to avoid doing this whenever possible, because you get a better feel for terrain from your guys' point of view. 2 or 3 for open ground, 5 for buildings. 16. They should probably cross the river on the chairlift, so they're not cut off from the town garrison. If your Mark IV is still in one piece, it can go too – just hook it on to two of the seats, one at each end. Wait a second... did I forget the chairlift?? ------------------ They lost all of their equipment and had to swim in under machine gun fire. 17. Schrullenhaft wrote: > the need for everyone to be able to see their units to select for orders Exactly. Night scenarios shouldn't be more difficult to play than day scenarios, but making night darker would have this effect. The challenge of a night scenario is built into the engine – reduced LOS, unreliable spotting etcetera. The graphics just give it a night 'feel', but they are otherwise irrelevant. 18. CM2 won't be a different type of game, but it will simulate the different scenarios found on the Eastern Front. There will be a good few improvements and new features, so, for example, there might well be trenches. CM2 will differ in this way, but essentially it'll be the same game. 20. I think this is an improvement... I forgot to point out something else – I'm rather pleased with the backs of my guys' heads. After all, that's what you see most of the time! 22. If you were surrounded by people trying to sneak up and kill you, you'd be staring too! Personally I prefer big eyes to small smudges, but yeah, I might redo them (I should be doing some REAL work first though). As for the top-left guy – some people do have their eyes close together. It's the type of thing where you look at something someone's made up, and you think "hey, that's weird, that can't be right!" – but if you saw it for real, you'd go "hey, that's weird, I can't believe it!". 24. I have to say I'm no fan of the soldier faces in CM. I know there are photorealistic mods and such floating around, but I decided to do my own, semi-realistic versions, which I think are more in keeping with the overall feel of CM. This is the result: Before... After... Personally I like them much better, but you can make your own mind up. Daves_CM_Faces.sea.bin (Mac) Daves_CM_Faces.zip (PC) Let me know what you think!
