To me the campaign systems are the feature I am most interested in in any wargame

I agree. The campaign of a wargame is critical. I just like the scenarios and linked campaigns in the series (EF WF and RS) rather than the dynamic ones. Anything above regiment or battalion size is just too tedious due to Talonsofts's interface IMHO. As far as CM units gaining experience, I think Fionn has stated that the campaigns in CM last days, not weeks or months. Therefore in theory, the units would not gain enough combat experience to warrant a change in their levels thoughout the campaign. However it would be nice to take a core force and lead them through a longer campaign and allow them to become seasoned vets. Allan

The campaign system is the core to any good wargame. However, in the EF,WF and RS the linked campaigns and scenarios are much better than the dynamic campaigns. The interface just makes moving a large number of units very tedious. I think the experience during the CM campaign issue has been stated before. Basically the campaigns are short in CM (IIRC)lasting a few days rather than months or years. It is therefore doubtful that units can gain significant experience during this short time to change their intial experience ratings. However, it would be nice to implement a longer campaign with core units that experience. Allan
 3.
quote:
Originally posted by Captain Foobar: I don't know whether to laugh or cry...

Here is something to make you cry....I applied the latest patch (4.02) to CC4 in hopes of playing a campaign game. In the first battle two things happened that make me want to remove the game from my HD. First, that *&%$* rocket halftrack shows up and with its laser guided, never miss indirect fire and wipes out about 3 tanks with 3 shots. If that wasn't enough, during the same battle I have a hidden AT gun set up perfectly to ambush a panther. The panther moves down the road and presents a broadside shot to my AT gun at about 50m. My AT gun says it's "rotating" then "seeking cover" then "rotating" again. I am shouting "fire the dang gun you morons!" All the while the panther stops, rotates its turret, aims and blows my AT gun to hell. Man that is frustrating! Especially when it happens more than once in a battle. It serves the gun crew right. If it takes them more than 30 seconds to aim and fire they deserve to die and have their little electron souls banished forever to my daughter's Teletubbie game. Not that I am bitter or anything Allan
 4.
quote:
Originally posted by CoolColJ: Becuase of the old school system, you have to control every single dang unit everyturn.

Although I like the series, this is one aspect that really pains me. For example, I started a dynamic campaign in Rising Sun over the weekend. The first battle with my battalion size force was 21 turns long. It took me about 13 turns just to move my units into attack positions. This took forever. I do like the scenarios since they are smaller and the units are already within close proximity of one another. Allan
 5. I think the CC series could be much better if they would just get the kinks/bugs out before going on to the next game in the series. Personally, I like the series. It can be fun. However, things like AI pathfinding, infantry being far too easy to spot and kill along with line of site problems really detract from the game. I they would just get it right before releasing it.......gee where have I heard that before Allan
 6.
quote:
Originally posted by Captain Manieri: Bar none....West Front sux.

Yes, please give some details. I liked EF and WF. However, after playing Rising Sun for the last day or two, it may be my favorite of the series. I am just getting used to jungle warfare, bunker busting and night combat. Quite a change from the European theater of armored infantry and flanking tactics. Allan
 7.
quote:
Originally posted by srare: Are those games any good - Rising Sun and East or is it West Front? Are they more operational type games? I was considering purchasing one - which one do you reccomend?

I like the campaign series. However, the dynamic campaigns in EF2 and WF are broken in my opinion. I don't know about RS yet. The OOB's and objectives get really out of whack the further you go in the campaign. For example, I decided to start a dynamic campaign commanding a regiment of U.S. armor on June 7, 1944. My forces consisted of mainly Grant light tanks, M8's with a few Shermans. As the campaigned progressed, I was not able to upgrade my force to Shermans even though I earned major victories, yet I was asked to face German Tigers and Panthers with increasing frequency. I was repeatedly asked to take objectives that were heavily defended by German heavy armor with a force that was essentially a recon regiment. I read somewhere that you could edit the campaign via a text file. I have not tried this yet. However, I fine the linked campaigns and scenarios to be pretty good since the OOB's are preset. I am just starting to play RS so the verdict is still out. As far as which one to get, choose the theater that interests you. Allan
 8. I had to email Steve a few months ago to make sure they still had my correct info. He emailed me back to confirm my order of 6-17-99. Wow,I can't believe it was that long ago. Allan
 9. Talonsoft has given us some good games. I just got Rising Sun to complete the campaign series. It is well worth the price. Now if I can just play it enough before CM is released Allan
