  1. I saw something similar when I went into the editor, chose SS Mechanized units in 1943, and then went back and set the date to 1941. Since there are no SS units available for 1941, BTS didn't bother to include .bmp's for 'em all. What you see there is the same effect I got: Some, or all of the stock .bmp files are missing.

Hmm, I don't quite follow you here..? If you mean slots, no, they're not about turns. They're just slots, different reinforcements. For instance, in an ordinary battle you could have two reinforcements arrive at the same time but in different parts of the map:

    #1 Arrives on turn X

    #2 Arrives on turn X

Or you could make them a bit different:

    #1 Arrives on turn X at 100 % probability

    #2 Arrives on turn X at 5 % probability

It works the same with operations, just the "turn" gets replaced by "battle".

This is, IMHO, the biggest flaw with Operations. You can't fine tune the arrival of reinforcements like you can in a stand-alone scenario: All Op reinforcements arrive on Turn 1, in one place, in one mob. A bit annoying, actually.
  3. Thanks for the links, but I've already Googled just about all that can be Googled on the subject --- it's hard copies of info I'm going to now.

Already ordered British Airborne Troops 1940 - 1945 by Gregory, and Frost's A Drop Too Many, just have to wait for them to arrive. While I'm waiting, maybe I'll head over the the library and see what it takes to get my hands on a copy of the British Official Histories.

  4. I've been trying to put together an Operation based on the Primosole Bridge battles (13 - 15 July '43, Sicily), but am having a hard time finding sources for what exactly happened, in what sequence, and to who. (For instance, I've read three different accounts, and each one says a different number of 6pdr ATG's were in use by the Para's --- one even says that they had some 20mm AA with them, and another says they put a captured Italian 75mm battery into use!) Most sources say the German FJ's attacked from the north --- but one says they came from the south, as well. I'd especially like something with a picture of the bridge itself, and the immediate area.

I was considering picking up D'Este's Bitter Victory, or Frost's A Drop Too Many --- but I'm not sure what amount of detail they go into.

    Any suggestions?

Maybe some of the British radio spotters who are slow and can't embark just have really big radios? Have you seen what some of the early war sets looked like?

IIRC some spotters carried their big radio in a carrier or truck that remained out of LOS while the spotters went forward, dragging wire to the radio. Maybe that's what these spotters are modelling?

No.18 set would have been standard; they were man portable. No. 38 sets were really small, but usually used for platoon communication within a company or company-to-battalion comms. Don't know how commonly used by FO(O)s they were, probably not very?

Oh, and to gain a few grog points, easy pointers for telling the difference are that the stars are white in Oz flag while red in Nz flag, and the Kiwi flag wouldn't have that seven pointed star that symbolises the Aussie states & territories.

(Mmmmmm, I always have time for kiwi fruit!)

I thought the seven-pointed star on the Aussie flag referred to their inglorious past as transportees --- you know, it kinda looks like the badge on a bobbies helmet. And I thought the red stars on the Kiwi banner referred to their socialist political leanings.

    You mean they don't?

  8. I seem to be having a spot of trouble in discerning the subtle difference between the Australian and New Zealand unit location icons. No offense to any Aussies or Kiwis out there, but yr flags do bare a marked similarity.

So, I came up with this:

    Aus.jpg

    (Hey, everybody likes kangaroos, right?)

And, while I was at it, I did something similar for the Canadians:

Now, if I can just convince myself that a kiwi would look good in the middle of a blue/white/red target...

EDIT: Oops, forgot to mention interested parties can find them at CMMODS.

How about instead of having to click on the LOS button and drag the red/black/blue line around the battlefield to see what a unit can see, whenever you click on a unit, the battlefield turns to shades, with the lightest being the most visible and the darkest not visible, and the stuff in between. This would save lots of time in plotting moves.

Dangerousdave, I'm guessing that sorta feature would not be included in a simple patch. It would most likely require an engine rewrite, ie CMX2 :( </font>
  10. As I was sorting through the list of CMBB .bmps that are transferable to CMAK, I noticed that the SS ("Waffengrenadier" for you CDV customers) Mechanized uniforms in CMAK are of a slightly different style. That sort of open-collar, tropical lounge-lizard look so popular with European armies in sweaty climes.

So, rather than copy them over with some high-collared Ost Front tailoring, I simply replaced the oval, blobby thing on the right collar tab with the historically correct SS runes. (Oh, and I gave the senior officer a Hauptsturmführer collar tab as well --- he was showing the same rank as the platoon CO).

If yr the anal type about that sort of thing, these will serve until Andrew gets around to modding them up in proper fashion.

Get 'em at the usual place: CMMODS.
