  1. Soma, It looks like we have a Logitech mouse and Yamaha based sound in common. One of the error messages I got did refer to a sound file so maybe it's the Yamaha chip that's doing it. Either that or the combination of Logitech and Yamaha. I've no idea unfortunately. Freyland, The 1.05 drivers were just released June 30, 2000. The web page header still says 1.04 but if you check the file name it should say 1.05. Here's the URL http://www.3dfxgamers.com/drivers/voodoo3/voodoo3_win9x_new.stm I hope it helps you. 2. Should I try to find a generic mouse driver somewhere? If so, where would I find it? I loaded Logitech's Mouseware 9 to see if that helped. It didn't. It has some nifty features though. I guess I'll have to uninstall that if I load up a diferent mouse driver. I seem to recall that the computer was just calling it a generic serial mouse when all this started but I'm not sure. I've been through so many install/uninstalls that it's all a blur now. On a side note, it's interesting that now that I've become a member all the messages that I sent earlier that used to say Junior Member now say Member. On sad side note, it's too bad that the lion's share of my posts that made me a member have been on this forum trying unsuccesfully to get the game to work. Okay, I'm done whining. For now. 3. Howdy Schrullenhaft, I've looked through my motherboard manual's section on bios and I don't see either of those options you mentioned. I've spent most of my evening trying out different combinations of accelerator levels/resolutions and, consequently, rebooting my computer. I'm about over it. I'm guessing I'll have to wait for either new drivers or until I decide to buy a new sound card and/or video card. Thanks for trying to help though. Cardinal Fang Have comfy chair. Will Travel.
  4. Will the AGP driver do me any good if I have a PCI video card? Cardinal Fang Have Comfy Chair. Will Travel
  5. Flash the bios? Yech! I'd rather edit the registry with a rusty axe. I have a Gigabyte GA-5AA with the F2 bios. According to the Gigabyte web site the latest bios is F3 but it also says the the F3 bios: "3. Fixed a single problem that SST 39SF010 hangs system with BIOS loading default values " Not that I know what the means but I don't think it applies to me. Thanks for the advice Cardinal Fang Have Comfy Chair. Will Travel.
  6. Pfalz XII, It's a complete install of Win98 and only on one drive. I'm sorry if I wasn't clear. I installed Win98 on a new hard drive that I bought and when the drive came in for the one that crashed I made that my D: drive. Right now there's not much on my D: drive. I'll see what I can find about AMD and certain sound cards. Thanks. Cardinal Fang No One Expects The Spanish Inquisition!
  7. Howdy, I do have DirectX7.0a installed. Cardinal Fang No One Expects The Spanish Inquisition!

  9. Thanks in advance for the assistance. Here's my system, AMD K6-2 500 64 MG RAM VooDoo 3 2000 PCI card with 1.05 WHQL drivers (released 6/30/00) AOpen AW724 sound card with 1040 drivers released 1/21/00 Kenwood 42X CD-ROM drive Logitech mousse with 8.32 drivers (I don't know the date but they were the latest they had on their site) I thought I had DirectX 7.0a but I just checked the Diagnostic tool and it said DirectX 7.0. I've recently had to reinstall Win98 a couple of times so I guess I could've miised it but I would've sworn that I downloaded 7.0a. I'm going to check that out and I'll post wether or not it helps. There are no IRQ conflicts reported. Thanks again for the assistance Cardinal Fang No One Expects The Spanish Inquisition!
  10. Thank you both for your assistance. Here's my system, AMD K6-2 500 64 MG RAM VooDoo 3 2000 PCI card 1.05 WHQL drivers (released 6/30/00) AOpen AW724 sound card with 1040 drivers that are dated 1/31/00 Kenwood 42X Cd-ROM The reason the case was off my machine was not in an effort to relieve any heat problems. About a week before CM was released my hard drive crashed. It was under warranty so I ordered the replacement. I bought a new drive so I could get my system up and I was going to use the replacement drive as my D drive. I installed the new drive and installed Win98. I'd messed up my sound card drivers and the system kept crashing. I finally wiped the drive and reinstalled everything. The final reinstall was about 3 days before I got CM so I haven't had much time to mess anything up. I'd kept the case off because I knew that I had another drive to install and that I had to install a ethernet card. After I'd installed them I was just to lazy to put the case back on. Actually I was afraid something would break the second I put it back on. I have put the case back on now. According to the device manager I have no IRQ conflicts. I'm guessing it has to be a driver issue but since I have the latest drivers I'm at a loss at what to do. I suppose I could try to find an older version of some drivers. Oh yes I also downloaded the latest mouse drivers too. Hmmmm I just checked the DirectX Diagnostic and it says I have DirectX 7.0. I could've sworn I had DirectX 7.0a. Would it say 7.0a? I'll have to go check. I hope this is the problem. i'll let you know. Thanks again for all your help. Cardinal Fang No One Expects The Spanish Inquisition!
  11. Howdy, I just spent another frustrating night watching CM freeze on my machine and constantly having to reboot. I checked out 3Dfx site and was happy to see that that new drivers were released just yesterday. I downloaded them and installed them and with great hope I fired up CM. I imediately had a lock-up. :-( One thing I noticed is that by turning off the trees it seemed to take longer to freeze. I say seemed because frankly I didn't spend a lot of time testing my theory. I also noticed that turning off ambient sound seemed to stop the pauses I was getting as I scrolled. Again I say seem because by this time I was over having to restart my machine. The end result is that I've updated all my drivers, I've changed the hardware acceleration on both my sound card and my video card, I've uninstalled and reinstalled CM, checked boxes, inchecked boxes, defragged, changed virtual memory, and NOTHING has worked. I know that CM is a great game, I just wish I could play it. This isn't to slam BTS. I know that they can't possible foresee every combination of hardware and software that's out there. I'm just irritated and frustrated that something about my computer is keeping me from playing CM.
  12. It's not just Gateways. I've been having the same problem; game hangs, mouse still works, requires a reboot and I don't have a Gateway. I wish I'd seen this thread earlier. Check the thread CRLDS3D.VXD? for details. My machine is a AMD K6-2 500 with 64 M RAM, a VOODOO 3 2000, AOpen AW724 sound card, and a logitech mouse. All the drivers are now up-to-date and I'm running DirectX7.0a. If there's any possible solution PLEASE let me know. Also it SEEMS that running it at 640x480 lets me play longer. 13. Thanks for the info. I'd reinstalled Win98 (actually re-reinstalled) a few days before installing CM. I will try the swap file thingy. For the time being I'm going to try sticking with 640x480 because it seems a tad more stable. i'm also going to try using the keyboard more just in case CM doesn't like my mouse for some reason ( I do have the latest drivers for my mouse). I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks again for your assistance. Cardinal Fang No One Expects The Spanish Inquisition
  14. Thanks again for your help and patience Schrullenhaft. I don't think there's a dust problem. I've recently installed a new hard drive and an ethernet card and there didn't seem to be an inordinate amount of dust. I have however kept the case off since I installed the new hardware mainly because I was afraid that if I put it back on something else would break and I'd just have to take it off again. I've checked the IRQs and the soundcard isn't sharing one with anything other than that "IRQ Holder for PCI Steering" thing. Actually the "AW724/YAMAHA DS-XG Legacy Sound System" is by itself on IRQ 5, the "AW724/YAMHA DS-XG PCI Audio CODEC" is on IRQ 9 with the "IRQ Holder for PCI Steering". The modem is on COM2 and I have a serial mouse on COM1. Since I have the case off and the computer is sitting right next to my 17" monitor could it be interference? I wouldn't think so because I haven't noticed any problems with any other programs. One thing I did notice was that when I'm scrolling around I get a pause and CM access's the hard drive and then it keeps going. I don't know if that means anything since the game sometimes freezes weven when I'm not scrolling like when I hit the GO! button. Thanks again for your patience, time and help. Cardinal Fang No One Expects The Spanish Inquisition
  15. Well, I uninstalled the sound drivers and reinstalled them. I went right into the game and it froze within a minute. I also noticed that the scrolling was jerky right before it froze. <sigh> Before I reinstalled the sound card I tried loading up a huge scenario and I just wandered around admiring the scenery. It was a little jerky when there was a lot of stuff on screen but otherwise it was fine but when I exited the game the game screen stayed on screen and I could see my icons through the CM screen. The machine was frozen and I had to reboot. I'm going to try playing at 640x480. The one time I did that it seemed a tad more stable. Cardinal Fang No One Expects The Spanish Inquisition
  16. Thanks for your help Schrullenaft. I really really really don't like the idea of going into the registry. Is it possible that the problem is not the sound card after all? I've tried all the different options for Direct Sound acceleration options from full to none and it seemed to have no effect. I've also turned the sound off in the game and that didn't help either. If it was the sound card wouldn't there been some effect from any of that? I also downloaded new mouse drivers but that didn't help either. Its quite frustrating but not so frustrating as to go into the registry. Yet. Cardinal Fang No One Expects The Spanish Inquisition
  17. First let me thank Schrullenhaft for his assistance. His reply to my orignal post worked and I now have the latest drivers set up for my AOpen AW724 sound card. The problem is that I'm still getting hangups. It was quite bad last night, I had 6 or 7 occurences. It's a testiment the great game that BTS created that I kept rebooting and coming back to the game. It is simply a fantastic game. During the last hangup I got a blue screen telling me there was an "exception error" (I think that's what it said) in crld3d.vxd. It was getting late but I rebooted and did a search for that file. It came up in two places 1) in my windows/system folder and in the /aw724 directory that the file I downloaded from AOpen created. Windows calls it a "virtual device driver". The dates between the two files were different (although I didn't write down the exact dates and I'm at work) and the one in the newly created directory is about twice the size of the one in the wimdows directory. I'm assuming from the name of the file that it has something to do with DirectSound3D. Can I just switch the two files or is there some other install routine? Should this file have been changed when I replaced the drivers? BTW I've tried turning down the DirectSound acceleration thing but it hasn't helped. Also I'm running Win98SE. Thanks for your patience and your advice. Cardinal Fang No One Expects The Spanish Inquisition!
  18. Howdy folks! I'm having some problems with CM hanging occasionally. Here's my system. AMD K6-2 500 64M RAM Voodoo 3 2000 w/ the latest WHQL drivers and DirectX 7.0a Aopen AW724 sound card. The game runs fine but then I suddenly hangs. Sometimes I can still scroll but I can't access anything. Other times the screen freezes. Usually I can ctl-alt-del out of it. Sometime it happens a few minutes into the game sometimes I can play for half an hour or more. Since the video drivers are up to date I suspect the sound card drivers. However I've no idea how to load the new drivers for the card! I've downloaded what I thought was the latest drivers from the AOpen web site but when I ran it all it did was create a directory called AW724 on my C: drive. When I looked in that directory there were a bunch of files but only two executables. One seems to start the AOpen tools tray (which doesn't help me) and the other starts a program that wants to download the latest driver. This crahsed a couple of times and the one time it started to download something I swear it was downloading the file I'd orignally downloaded. BTW the file I downloaded was over 5 megs and I would've thought that the drivers were in there. Can anyone help me? Is the sound card the likely culprit? I'm hoping that I've missed something painfully obvious and simple. Cardinal Fang No One Expects The Spanish Inquistion!
  19. Howdy, Thanks for the reply Bullethead. I was aware of the information provided in the editor or DYO but I was hoping that there was a way to see the full in game stats. One of the things I like about the SP series was the encyclopedia. Maybe for CM > 1 there can be something similar where you can not only get the full game stats but also see the unit as it appears in the game. Kind of like what they do with some flight sims. 20. Howdy folks, First the good news, I received the full version and my computer is still working. I am getting screen freezes but I'm hoping that updating my sound card drivers will fix that. Now on to my question ( I know, it's about time!) Is there any way to view the information that's provided about a unit when you hit the enter key outside of a game? I'm a semi-grognard (I'd have thought I was a full grognard until reading this forum) and I don't know everything about every unit in the game. I think it'd be nice to see the full unit information when purchasing units for a scenario. Ummm or is there a way to do this but I don't know how? 21. Since I still don't have CM (grrrrrrrr!) I've been playing SPW@W, both a solo campaign and a PBEM game. I know it can't hold a candle to CM but I have fun playing it and it has the advantage of actually being on my hard drive. I'm also still playing Red Baron 3D online. I've spent a ridiculous amount of time playing that game and I plan on spending more. One of these days I might actually get good at it. 22. Rats and mice! Still no CM here in Norfolk, VA. I just received a phone call from the front desk saying I had a package but it turned out that it was just my replacement hard drive from Western Digital. Hmmm Come to think of it the mail doesn't normally ger here this early in the day. So there's still hope! Cardinal Fang No One Expects The Spanish Inquisition P.S. I still have to refrain myself from starting each post with a S!. Too much Red Baron 3D!
  23. Someone had mentioned the whole fdisk thing but since the drive was new and still under warranty I thought I'd have someone take a look at it. That's when the ran a diagnostic on it and said it was dead. They also told me it was recalled by the manufacturer. The more I think of it the more upset I get because if it had been recalled the store should've told me. Anyway I've been having NO fun with my new drive. This morning everything looked good. Until I tried to open Free Agent and got the dreaded Blue Screen of Death. After several BSOD's I ended up blanking the drive and reloading everything. Again. Even that didn't go well since it took three tries to install Win98SE. I'm just waiting for it to die again. I hate computers. The only reason I keep trying is so I can play CM at least once. 24. I have a computer again!!!!!! But no Combat Mission. :-( According to the store the drive they sold me had been recalled. It would've been nice if they'd told me. I couldn't wait the 3-5 business days for the new drive to get here (Not with CM practically on my doorstep!) so I went out and bought a new one and I'll use the replacement as a second drive. Of course in the process of reloading everything my CD-ROM drive has decided to start acting wierd. Blech. And no I don't want to hear anything like "Gee maybe your motherboard is bad". Just let me believe that The Magic Computer Repair Fairy will show up tonight and make everything better. Cardinal Fang No One Expects The Spanish Inquisition! 25. Howdy Good Folks, Wouldn't you know it? As soon as we get word that CM is on the way my computer decides it can't handle the excitement and starts going belly up. It takes me three tries to get the thing to boot. I keep getting wonderful little messages like "Invalid Partition Table" which I know can't be a good thing. I'm going to drag it down to the shop today and stand on their heads until it's done because I know, I just KNOW, that if it's in the shop over the weekend I'll come home to find CM waiting on my doorstop. Can you imagine the horror of having the game but not having anything to play it on! I am sad. I think I'll go curl up in the corner and cry now. Cardinal Fang No One Expects The Spanish Inquisition!
