1. Before going further, I'd like to say that this discussion has been a positive for me - I've spent the weekend reading my ACW books.

Mirage2K wrote in his post dated 8-27-00 11:18 AM almost exactly what I wanted to say. I will add, though, that many NORTHERNERS were feeling blackmailed by the South over threats of secession. It was definitely a two way street of antagonism.

The issue of slavery brought Congress to fisticuffs, dissolved a major political party, and split two religions in half (Methodist and Baptist) - and this was BEFORE the war started.

Babra - my comments about the contents of the Constitutional Amendment appear to be incorrect. I found no mention that the Amendment would have barred slavery in future states. Sorry for the misinformation. The Amendment APPEARS to have been passed to mollify Southerners that the Federal government had NO desire to end slavery where it was currently legal (a position repeatedly taken by Lincoln)

The vote, however, does not appear to be hypocritical. The voting pattern was roughly: 60% Republicans against, 40% Republicans for, 100% Democrats for. Presumably, the 40% Republicans for were like Lincoln - keep it legal where it already is, but attempt to prevent its spread.

  2. Babra, I am aware of that amendment.

If that is the amendment I am thinking of, it ALSO would have barred ANY new states from having slavery.

Elijah, you are saying that Northerners cared as much about blacks than Southerners did? Many Northern states had abolished slavery. I think outlawing slavery shows a little more concern for blacks than that showed by the South. What kind of opression are you referring to? Certainly SLAVERY is the ultimate form of opression.

If Northerners didn't 'give a fig' about blacks, why, then, did Emancipation become a goal of the war? Certainly it would have had no effect on the uncaring Norhterners you refer to.

You are right. No Northerner ever cared about any black. How could I have been so stupid. The Abolitionists were a dream. The many speeches by Northern preachers of the evils of slavery but an illusion. Give me a break.

Babra, I believe the South would have been the side that started the War when it illegally seized property of the US government. The first shots at Fort Sumter were fired by Southern troops when they attempted to take, by force, property of the US government.

CavScout - Thanks for the SC ruling. I wait with baited breath for any info Elijah has that might indicate that secession is legal. Like the American Revolution, the only way secession could have been 'legal' was with the force of arms to back it up.

  3. In response to Elijah:

Under what law did the Southern states have to legally secede?

On what moral grounds does ANY state or nation have to argue that slavery should be legal?

Elijah, you didn't read what I wrote. I DID NOT say that freeing the slaves was the MAIN goal of the ACW. I said that it become a war policy exemplified by the Gettysburg address. And yes, the non-existent rights of blacks would have been worse had the South won.

There WERE clashes of arms over slavery in the newly settled territories in the West.

Second, do you not have ANY idea what the governments stance was towards slavery? Even IF EVERY citizen in the North opposed slavery, the PROPER method of abolishing it would have been to pass a law. ONLY THEN would it have been okay to send troops into the South to enforce the law.

Gee, I would think that the reason the blacks had little Civil Rights was because of racist laws implemented by Southern whites.

I notice no one refuted my statement that the Southern states were hypocritical in their claim of state's-rights.

I still maintain that slavery was the ultimate cause of the ACW. No dispute over slavery, no ACW.

Certainly, the North wanting the South in the Union was the PROXIMATE cause.

Using 'underlying' may have been misleading as the terms I have always seen in history books (or scientific journals) are ultimate and proximate.

Proximate causes are often meaningless. E.g., Loss of blood may be the proximate reason someone died, but it tells you nothing of the ultimate reason leading up to them getting shot with a gun in the first place.

  4. My current PBEM against Robert Hall seems more akin to how real WWII combat might go. We have units in an urban area mere meters from each other and they are just sitting there. smile.gif

So far the game has a nice feel to it as there is are enough pauses to give the game a tenseness to it. If this game was played against any other opponent, it likely would have ended in a few turns of nasty street fighting.

I highly recommend that players slow down their pace of play, it really adds to the game.

  5. If you are using the free Excel viewer, you are SOL trying to get the individual unit screens to work.

If you ARE running Excel 97 or 200 and keep getting pic not found messages there are several possibilites.

    1. You first opened up an Excel file that was in a different directory than the database file. The macro looks for the pics in the directory of the FIRST workbook that was opened.

This has been fixed. Pictures are now looked for in the directory of whatever the ACTIVE workbook is (i.e - the database)

    2. You are using a Mac. A user kindly pointed out how Mac directory structures work. They don't have backslashes but the database was looking for for a backslash in the directory.

    This has been fixed.

    3. You don't have the database file and pictures in the same directory. This you have to change for yourself.

    4. Whn you switch either from one class of unit to another (infantry to vehicles) or from one nationality to another (German to British) the unit position indicator stays in the same spot. That is, if you are looking at German vehicle number 47 (Wirbelwind) and switch to American vehicles you will get a picture not found error. This is because the American don't HAVE a vehicle number 47 as the American only have 41 vehicles.

This has been fixed. Now that database switches to the first unit and the pic not found error won't show up.

    5. You are attempting to access info on artillery or guns. Artillery and guns are not yet in the database and you will get a pic not found error.

    Jason

You DID unzip the 2.5 MB picture download?

  6.
quote:
The Civil War was no more fought for slavery than WWII was fought for the freedom and rights of the Jews. I think slavery is wrong but you cannot argue that the North thought it was wrong and they would fight a war to end it as the facts will not support such a case.

    Poppycock.

The underlying cause of the American Civil War was slavery.

Yes, Lincoln did say early in the Civl War that "I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with slavery in the States where it exists." Within a year, however, Lincoln and Congress had made freeing the slaves a Union war policy. teh Gettysburg address seems pretty clear to me that the Union aim was freeing the slaves.

I find the hypocrisy of the Southern states ironic. They were for state's rights and a weak federal government everywhere except regarding the fugitive slave law. There, they wholeheartedly supported strong federal intervention.

  7. My guess is, unlike releasing a beta demo 7 months before the release of the full game for CM1, BTS will release a gold demo a few weeks before CM2 (and only when CM2 has a firm release date)

CM2 doesn't need the exposure that a beta demo would create and I don't suppose BTS wants the hassles that a too early demo release would cause.

Besides, we will still have CM1 to tide us over.

  8. A MG might fire five or six times in a turn. A mortar can fire 10-15 times in a turn.

I find them useful for a few minutes of concentrated suppression.

Best chances of getting kills are versus open topped vehicles, stationary guns, and troops in woods (for treebursts)

Don't forget that these little guys can also fire indirect.

  9. The problem is newbies who come in and obviously haven't read ANYTHING before posting.

If they would take the time to read a couple days worth of messages they would likely get most of their questions answered without even asking them in the first place. If you don't feel it is worth your time to try and find the answer on your own, I see no reason to spend my time answering your question.

Given that there are over 90,000 messages, shouldn't newbies think it likely that somewhere, sometime ther question wsa asked and answered already?

Or perhaps newbies could come in and write. "I'm new here and really like CM. I have a few questions and was wondering if there is a FAQ?"

Answer: Yes, although it is kind of in a rough state right now. It DOES answer the question of what CM2, CM3, CM4, etc. will be about.

ALL newbies should spend at a minimum a few days and preferably a week getting the feel of a new board before posting.

  10. I put a little blurb in the readme that kinda mentions that the pics and individual unit screen don't work with the free viewer. I have now put it in bold. smile.gif

The reason they don't work with the viewer is that the viewer is read-only and the drop-down menus require interaction with the screen.

The macros hate anything other than Excel 97 or 2000 but I have cobbled together a solution if you have a full-fledged spreadsheet other than Excel 97/2000.

Think of the database as free advertising for all the cool things you can do with Excel rolleyes.gif
