  1. They were respecting a non-agression pact at the time. Stalin was probably hoping that France would seriously damage Germany which would allow him to possibly invade easily a year or two later. The Russian Army was in the process of being reorganized as well when they were attacked.

Bottom line - they just weren't ready.

  2. And definitely don't do what I did....

You know how sometimes you can just bend a paperback book back and let the pages riffle through your fingers. When I didn't see a CD in the box I decided to give the manual a good wringing - and just barely felt a little bit of resistance in the middle of it so I stopped myself. I almost broke my CM CD in two myself after waiting 8 months to get it!

  3. Well, you're probably doing lots of stuff wrong judging by that description of the action. smile.gif

The first thing you should do before

you even play the first turn is decide how careful/reckless you will have to be by reading your mission briefing. I haven't played CE for a little while but I recall that the first time I played it

as the Germans I definitely knew that caution was a good idea.

    > and I always just get shot to hell before > the battle is half

    > over while capturing maybe one objective

Maybe try not to worry about objectives at first and do some shooting

to hell yourself before you go for the flags. This scenario is like a little

game of chess and you start out with half of the objectives already so you're

not going to lose (or lose badly) if you can hold what you have at the beginning.

Try letting the Americans attack your position first, with your guys in good

cover, see if you can repulse them and THEN start thinking about

counterattacking for the flags - it'll be a lot easier at that point

because your opponent may be hurting.

I've gotten total victories without taking ANY objectives simply by causing

lots of damage to the other side. The flags are important but are not the ONLY

thing. Keeping your guys alive is usually a great idea.

If you're rolling your STUG over a hill where 5 Shermans can see it, you're

definitely being too reckless with your tanks. You have 3, they have 5. You can't

afford to be reckless. Keep your Stugs under cover, hidden behind buildings,

behind a smoke screen, manouver carefully trying to get to where you can

attack 1 Sherman with more than one of your Stugs simultaneously while the

other Shermans can just sit and watch. This is called divide and conquer. Be

super careful until the number of vehicles on each side starts to even out.

If you're down to your last Stug, be very careful with it and even hide it

away somewhere. Just the threat of it being on the board, even if it's not

doing much, makes the other side have to be careful and go slow. Once you have no

vehicles left and the other side has some you should start praying because

    you're probably toast.

    > I quit the german scenario after a sherman > actually leveled a 2 story

    > building, killing several smg squads.

Well, tanks can destroy buildings and lots of players enjoy making buildings

explode (me included smile.gif), so it's probably not a great idea to hide your guys in

exposed buildings. Forests might be safer, but those can catch fire - nowhere

on the battlefield is 100% safe - but sometimes buildings can be really bad (you learn to tell).

That's enough for now I think. You're probably just being a little too gung-ho

and aggresive and not thinking enough about defense in this scenario. Some of the things that happen like the MGs jamming and hits on enemy tanks not doing much is just plain bad luck and there's not much that you can do about it.

Try to read some books on WWII tactics or find stuff on the net. Real-world tactics work really well in CM. Try to use games where you get clobbered as learning experiences. When something horrible happens to your guys, try to figure out why and don't do it again until you're sure you're

willing to risk the consequences. Your game is bound to get better and pretty

    soon you'll be cruising.

    Enjoy the ride!

I have a feeling that these are residual or leftover targets. Your unit was firing at something in the previous turn which moved to put a building between you and he at/near the end of the turn.

The target line appears to tell you that your unit is still paying attention to the out-of-LOS unit and waiting to see if he comes back, but I don't really think he'll be shooting through buildings at the beginning of the next turn to get him. Use the LOS tool, you'll probably find that they're out of LOS and can't be seen/shot at.

    > Definitely second the recommendation!

    > Here's the spoiler--- Didn't that King

    > Tiger make you crap yourself? Holy smokes!

I never did manage to take it out and I don't think he caused too much damage either. We just both kept a nice respectable distance from one another. It was nice not to see the AI do some stupid charge with it.

This op. was very frustrating - did you have crappy weather too? The third and 4th battles had deep mud and my guys could barely move and we hadn't even reached the outskirts of (I forget the name of the town!) Ebenburg <???> yet.

Finally managed to take a few of the first buildings at the end of #4, but too little too late.

The funnest part of the battle for me was following US doctrine to blast every building more than one story high to smithereens with those 2 assault guns. I still get a kick out of seeing buildings explode!

  6. > also the troops are extremely sensitive to > incoming fire.

This is a function of the type of soldier advancing and the type of incoming fire. In the demo, you haven't really seen the high-quality troopies yet. You have to look at the experience of your men and command them accordingly. If they're green, yeah they're gonna run. If they're regular, they might break the first try but if you have a good commander you can rally them back and eventually get them to go where you want them to go. If they're elite - well you've got less to worry about. You definitely see a big obvious difference in how the different qualities behave under fire.

  7. I haven't heard anything mentionned about this one yet, so I thought I'd put in a good word and recommend it to anyone looking for a quick and fun operation.

It's a nice quick little op. easily played in an evening or 2 and shows what can happen as a recon group approaches a defended village. It starts off small and builds up in a nice little crescendo leading to the final battles. And the Allies have plenty of nasty little things to worry about.

Played this one at +25% and +1 skill level against the AI and it was a good fight - tactical defeat for me, but it was a lot of fun.

    Hi Bill,

If the AI did that I'm really impressed. The way it should be! Sorry about your Piats though. smile.gif

Now that I've played a few more operations I understand completely what you were saying about not having any control over how the computer orients the front lines and that it makes things difficult when designing the op. I think part of the problem is that when you design the operation and you have to say which way the attacker is coming from you can only give one direction. That makes the Destroy type operations a little problematic - these are usually meant to simulate a surrounded defender, but the mechanics of the operation engine insist on only drawing one front and having reinforcements come in from one direction.

Do you think that there's any possibility of Charles adding something in where you can specify an attack coming from many different directions? That way you could get a nice pocket where the paras have to defend from all directions. In CM2, I imagine it would be almost a necessity to simulate the fighting in the Kessel.

Also, maybe it would be nice to have some objective spots in operations, even if they don't count for any/many points to give some focus points to concentrate the defense around. In Arnhem, maybe one objective on either side of the bridge, just to make it clear that this is what all the fighting's about. I don't know how the AI would handle this op. if playing the Brits, but I doubt they'd go for the bridge if they weren't told that it was important via an objective.

  9. Hi Dreghorn,

    Alt-S should definitely work.

The problem I think, is that you must install CM into the directory that is suggested by the installer program. If you change the directory, then the save-game won't work. Try to reinstall into the default directory and see if it does the trick. I had the same thing happen to me.

  10. > I think it's an AI issue.

    > I totally destroyed the germans as they

    > ran across the bridge into my ambush just > up on the high ground.

I'm not so sure. Assuming that the Brits can set up a nice perimeter on the North side of the bridge following the first battle, the Germans are going to have a hard time crossing the bridge in subsequent battles even with a human commander.

I didn't really see enough heavy arty/guns on the German side that could be used to pulverize those heavy buildings on either side of the bridge and that would sort of be the key. I would probably use smoke if I was the krauts, but dislodging that bridgehead would be really nasty assuming the Brits don't lose too much in battle 1.

It's sort of a shame that it doesn't seem the Germans can exert pressure from both sides of the river - that would make it a whole new ballgame.

  11. I agree with Stompin on this one. Just because you were able to see the enemy in back of your Panther (probably because someone else had LOS), it doesn't mean that the Panther knew he was there - especially if your tank was buttoned up.

Looks like you got burned by a nice move by the AI to get around your Panther.

  12. This has been a very common discussion for the last 7-8 months or so. Do a search to find the other threads.

If you trust your opponent, an easy way to speed up the game I think is just to exchange passwords. It lets you skip 1-2 emails per turn - those turns when your opponent just watches a movie can be jumped over quickly by you. Get it?
