Pretty sure that's not the way it works. Every unit has it's own sightings and I remember reading somewhere from Steve or Charles that sighting ability was linked to the experience of the unit. It sounds like you knew about the HQ's location because some other unit had spotted it and targetted it and caused casualties, but when your new squads were sent to the area they had trouble locating the 2 troublemakers.

Just curious, was there anything that could have made spotting them difficult? Forest, smoke, was the HQ in a building?

Also, was anyone else shooting at the HQ already at the time???

Don't start them in their default locations. Keep them on the back of the hill and move them into position gradually.

By the time they are in position, the AI will probably have multiple things to worry about (fire from the tanks, smoke/shelling from the direct fire mortars) and won't be able to key in on the FO's as much.

I have a feeling that those FO's are really the AI's only good targets on turn 1, so it's wailing on you with everything it's got.

Keep trying. It can be done. I'm not a bad player but I got pasted the other night by the AI and am still in shock.

It'll surprise you when it happens but eventually you'll do a battle where just absolutely nothing will go right.

Yes the 6th is Canadian. The flag that appears in the little splash screen within the game is not the current Canadian flag but rather the old flag when Canada was a Dominion and not a truly independant nation yet. The sacrifices made by Canada in the 2 world wars were instrumental in Canada gaining recognition as a nation.

Sorry about that history lesson! The flag is a nice touch that made me smile the first time I saw it. Most developpers would probably have used the contemporary maple-leaf flag without even thinking about it twice.

    Hi Chris,

The problem with the new way explained in really basic terms is:

When A sends his turn after viewing 9 and doing 10, that saved file would have to contain both the movie for 9 _and_ the moves for 10. The way things are done now is that a saved game file contains either moves or a movie but never both. It's the simplest way of doing it. The old way forces the game to hold on to too much old info that you would, as a programmer, rather get rid of as soon as possible.

It sounds deceptively easy to reprogram things so that they work the way outlined in your method, but if you've ever programmed a decent sized app you'd probably realize that it would be a major pain in the butt to do it. Comes down to whether the programmers decide that it's worth the trouble to save us a few e-mail exchanges - so far the answer has been no and it's not too difficult a decision to live with considering how cool the game as a whole is.

    Just a guess...

Keep the bunkers and ambushes out of sight of that monster hill on the US side where the spotters usually hang out. It's difficult but possible - you're sacrificing the long range attacks to be able to stay out of sight longer.

Use the 81mm mortars to completely smoke/shell the top of that hill - making spotting from it impossible. You can do it for about 6-8 minutes or so. There really aren't any other great places to spot from.

Also, separate your units so that one barrage won't knock out more than one thing at a time. The default German setup has the infantry gun right next to a bunker and one barrage will knock them both out - really bad setup. Also separate those German mortars so that a counter will only take one out not both.

  7. You guys helped Craig so fast maybe you could give me a hand too.

My PC isn't rebooting but I've got a Voodoo 2 Monster card in my PC that's acting weird. Every so often - the screen will just freeze in any game that uses the 3D card and the hard-drive will be lit up for a second or 2 and then it'll "unjam" and work normally again. It's best described as a graphics "stutter". It's not too bad in CM but in a racing game it's enough to throw you totally off.

Someone a long time ago told me that the graphics card was overheating and that I should stick a dedicated fan in, but I thought that sounded a little weird at the time.

    Any ideas????

  8. Search the net for the Dieppe raid and you should get plenty.

Very nasty operation. There's still a lot of bitterness and controversy surrounding the raid in Canada. One book that I have read called Green Beach theorizes that the entire thing was simply a cover-up/diversion so that an Allied radar expert could infiltrate a nearby radar station and look at the technology so that he could acertain how best to jam the German radar.

Even though it was a disaster, Churchill (I think) said that for every life lost in Dieppe, 10 were saved on D-Day due to the lessons learned.

  9. > My question is NOT, "will" music be put in > CM. I already know the answer to that is

    > NO. But my question is, "why?"

Just a guess. Regardless of how good the music in a wargame is, it tends to get turned off after a few listens. Steel Panthers is a great example - the score was wonderful - but I don't think anyone kept listening to it after the first week or two. So it's probably not really worth the effort from a programming standpoint.

Another reason - the sound effects in combat mission are really important from a gameplay point of view - often the first indication of an enemy unit is just the sound of them firing at you, and having music playing at the same time would interfere with the audio feedback of the game. I usually have my stereo playing when I play games, but with CM I tend to turn it off so I can hear the battlefield sounds.

  10. > I am myself NOT playing in it! I would

    > love to, but I simply have not the time...

The prophet of the Church of CM not taking part in the big event? That's a shame! There will be a great wailing and gnashing of teeth at your absence.

Surely there must be some sort of suicide squad like the Dirty Dozen in the OB that you could take control of for some really quick games (ie. carry this message to HQ across that minefield under artillery fire) ???

  11. > So im assuming that we will get a post of > whos on what side- like a order of battle.

    > Like (pardon my lack of art skills)

You probably won't get a list of all of the players in the game and a complete OOB - just the ones you would realistically be expected to communicate with and know about.

    They're taking fog-of-war pretty seriously.

  12. Another minefield question:

Is it possible for an engineer unit to _think_ that it's cleared a safe path through the mines when in reality it hasn't?

My first time through VoT, I didn't really know how the engineers were supposed to deal with mines and I sort of guessed at the proper procedure.

I had engineers on each side of the road advancing ahead of the Shermans to make sure the road was safe. They stumbled upon the minefield on the road so I moved one squad as close as I could to it (he was still off to side of the road under cover though - I may have forgotten to rotate him towards the minefield though) and just left him there for a turn or 2. The minefield disappeeared as I expected and I decided to move my Shermans past. The first one got through without any problems, but the second one got blasted.

    Kind of cool actually.

  14. Who has killed anything with the flamethrower??? The AI has!!!

I didn't take the flame too seriously as a target when I played through VT as the Germans - there always seemed to be something bigger and more juicy to shoot at. Next thing I know, the computer has 2 flamethrowers in downtown Plomville and they torched the whole place to smithereens in about a minute flat. Almost every building was burning - I lost a platoon and a MG and the smoke took away my Tiger's LOS to most of the interesting parts of the battlefield. Sheesh! Still gives me nightmares - I hate that hissing sound.

  15. I'm not the most in the know about the Meta-Campaign but I can try taking a shot at these...

    > So does anyone know the status of how many > of us are playing (#of Vrs #of).

The last I heard, there are about 200 of us.

    > whos ass do we need to kiss to get that

    > extra art support, esc.

Just like in real WWII - your commanding officer's - you won't know who he is in real life though, just his alias. He might have to do a bit of brown-nosing himself to get them for you from _his_ superiors.

    > would it be reasonable to assume (I know, > I know ...) that the scenarios will be

    > played double blind in terms of the maps, > OOB etc?

The scenarios will be created on the fly as needed when the GM's decide that the movement of units will bring them into conflict with another. There should be total fog-of-war, and indeed some of the scenarios are likely to be recon missions - just find out what's on the map in that sector and get out.
