1. Not buying it ? So what.

Perhaps you would like to lead a crusade and convince everyone here that they shouldn't buy CMBB because it doesn't meet your asthetic standards.

Do you think everyone out there is buying 128Mb video cards right now ?! Perhaps BTS/BFC can just come out with the minimum specs of a P4 2.53GHz or a Mac G4 Dual 800MHz and be done with it. That way they can develop the game as they think it should be and not cater to some whiney person who is too poor to afford the latest hardware ! Believe me, 8Mb is definitely the minimum and most people will want a video card with more video memory. 32Mb of VRAM was the 'target' when CMBB was created. They pushed the limits of 32Mb with CMBB and anything lower is going to downsample the textures (grass and backgrounds predominately, buildings and vehicles after that).

Developing a game and catering it only to the latest hardware is not a good idea. Perhaps this Half Life Gamer's Survey will give you an idea of what is actually a common system. While this info may not be 100% accurate since things change, it does give you some sobering info as to how much market share slower computers actually have.

CMBB doesn't necessarily cater to gamers who are typically 14-30 year old males who have the cash and time to always upgrade their computers. The next issue beyond this is that CMBB is still based on the CMBO engine and while a lot of graphical improvements have been put it, a number of other graphical improvements (32 bit color, etc.) are not possible with the current engine

Voxman is entitled to his opinion. Why jump to the defense of the game - if it is as good as you suggest, it will defend itself in due course.

  2. David, I abstracted the distances slightly. The map I had was complemented with a scale which I used to divide up the map into grids of 20 x 20m. I went from there. The distances are not exact, (probably not even close) but it is a good size map.

Maastrician- the bunker is actually meant to represent a MG nest that was hidden in trees at the tope of the hill. In reality, the nest was useless, because it only had Los (as you discovered) of a very limited nature. It is really only of significance if the US advance (early on) past Roadblock 2. You will notice that the other bunker has LOS to block 4, but of limited nature. The nests that these represent were historically of limited effectiveness.

As for the direction, you are probably right. It was an oversight, but of relative insignificance.

Would the scenario benefit if the bunkers were less restricted in disposition?

  3. The area around Son itself is just plain stupid. Too many jaggies and undulations. There are also a heap of un-natural peaks and troughs in the initial battles. It was one of the first ops I did and it was rushed. I did fix some of the problems and I totally redid the Son area, but I'm still not happy enough with it too release it. If you liked this one though, try out my others at Der Kessel - Haut Fornel and the soon to appear Foucarville Roadblocks.

  4. Thanks. Its been on the backburner for a long time. There were too many problems with the map and too many similar battles. Just another couple of wasted hours I gues : )

  5. I assume you're talking about the scenario Totalize from Der Kessel? I tested this scenario several times from the Axis side and whilst I managed to win, I wouldn't have said it was easy. As you said, you have only played through half of the scenario - there is a lot more to come. You will also find that if you are more aggressive and actually attempt to pursue your objectives, which are the capture of the allied held VF's, you will find it far more difficult.

Obviously if you sit back with your Tigers, you're not going to have much trouble plunking the majority of the allied tanks at long range.

I didn't encounter as much allied air support as I expected, but it did make an appearance. Remember, you have several AA guns as the Germans, all of which can concentrate their fire on incoming allied aircraft.

  6. Jabos is a tough one as Germans. I played it the other night, and was dealt similar punishment to you in the first few turns. If you want to know how many fighters the allies have, open up the file in the scenario editor. You'll be absolutely flaberghasted biggrin.gif

  7.
quote:
Yeah, I'm all for more vehicles AFAIK no Ferdinands were used in NW Europe...

According to Charles Whiting, in his book "Siegfried", Ferdinands from the 34th Assault Gun Brigade were used in the defense of the Siegfried line, and came up against Task Force Rose from the US 3rd Armoured Division. However, I would seriously question the veracity of his account, as he recalls the Ferdinand as having a 90mm Main Gun, and the M4 Sherman as having a 77mm Main Gun confused.gif
