1. Two words: bo ring Not that your solution wouldn't be more realistic, but frankly one of the things i really like about this game is the naval warfare (though less damage is a good idea i think.) A third reich approach doesn't appeal to me at all, but I favour game play over realism. ymmv Eric [ May 30, 2002, 03:29 PM: Message edited by: erich ]

3. Well, I've made the mistake of forgetting about the nahverteidigungswaffe, with spectacularly bad results. OTOH, I once drove my tiger to within about 25m of a building containing an ami rifle squad. I could see the grenade very clearly as it flew from the building, rolled under the tiger, and exploded. The crew, despite suffering no casualties, bailed ------------------ Eric
4. Tommi: Your accounts of The Winter War are really interesting. I'd really like to learn more about it. Can you recommend any books on the subject? Preferably with at least some English, but even if in Finnish. I'm sure some will have been translated. Thanks. Eric Hansen
5. I'm deeply saddened by the meteoric drop in the signal to noise ratio on this BB. It seems lately that discussions always degenerate into flame wars, pissing contests, and personal attacks and I, for one, am getting sick of it. I urge BTS to stand behind their threats of expulsion, if necessary, as I think it has been warranted on a couple of occasions that I won't specify here; I think most of us already know what I'm talking about. This BB used to be informative and interesting, and most people do behave. I think it speaks volumes that Fionn Kelly, a valuable and dedicated supporter of CM and a fount of information for those of us less well informed about CM and its subject than himself, has chosen to withdraw rather than face a continuing litany of abuse. I applaud his selfless devotion, and I apologize for not speaking up before, when it might have mattered. I guess one grows desensitized to the abuse of others on usenet, and there's really no excuse for it. To those of you who will no doubt abuse me for my position on this matter, I say flame away, I'll not respond. Reasonable debate, however, I invite. Eric Hansen Queen's Univ. Chemistry Dept. 6. Where Eagles Dare -- brilliant, though really more a spy thriller set in ww2 than a bona fide war movie. The Dam Busters -- very entertaining, though the dog's name is somewhat jarring. 633 Squadron -- kinda slow moving, but I think the end was copied by George Lucas for the death-star-destruction mission in Star Wars. Cross of Iron -- Simply the best (by land) Das Boot (director's cut) -- Simply the best (by sea) A Walk in the Sun -- Funny and Sad at the same time. Well acted. Kelly's Heroes -- One of the best caper flicks ever. Battle of Britain -- Great aerial footage, but cheesy soap-opera-ish subplots bring it down. Everybody dies, though, so it redeems itself somewhat. Stalingrad -- Begins well, but seems to lose focus, and just gets depressing. The scene where they get assaulted by soviet armour was spectacular. I've mixed feelings about this one, but recommend it anyway. There are many more, but I do have a life, contrary evidence notwithstanding ------------------ Eric [This message has been edited by erich (edited 12-08-99).]
7.
quote:
I didnt suggest they soley go continuous

It has been established that BTS hasn't got the resources to produce multiple games on this subject in a given year. Therefore, if they were to decide to produce a continuous time version of CM, it would mean no CM2 as we know it. I think your idea for a continuous time, pausable CM has merit, but I don't think BTS is the company to do it any time soon. Perhaps under a different business plan, but not as it stands now. So yes, you are suggesting that BTS go solely continuous. And I think they have stated that they won't do RT ("...no desire to cater to the twitch crowd." I'm paraphrasing here.) ------------------ Eric
8. I, for one, have no desire whatsoever to see BTS produce a continuous time wargame (I really hate the use of the term real time in this context...it's just not.) I play, and enjoy, Close Combat (not 4) against human opponents, but I'm glad I can play either as the whim takes me. I think BTS has expressed its opinion on the subject quite eloquently and clearly in its mission statement, and I'd be disappointed to see any deviation from it without an extremely good reason. I don't think arguments about economic reasons to go continuous hold up; BTS is targeting a small market in an intelligent manner, fully aware of its limitations, and producing the best product they can for that market. Other companies will take care of the continuous time thing, which I'm sure will be 3D (like Myth, perhaps, but ww2 tactical combat?) in time. Sure, it'd be nice if these companies (are you listening Atomic? I didn't think so) gave as much attention to realism as BTS does, but it's an imperfect world. And besides, if BTS went continuous, who'd be there to make a game like CM at all? ------------------ Eric
9. I've had an interest in the Eastern Front since seeing a documentary called The Russian German War, in the mid seventies. I sometimes become frustrated with the American belief in themselves as the vanquishers of Hitler, and the saviors of the world, especially in view of the tremendous sacrifice of the Soviet people. I in no way believe that the invasion of Europe in 1944 was unnecessary, though. I think the goal was to end the war as quickly as possible, and failure on D-day would have meant an extension of hostilities that cannot be calculated. My grandfather, a wehrmacht sergeant, was spared service on the Russian Front by his company comander, who transferred him (and several other men) to a rear echelon unit in Norway just 3 days before the start of operation Barbarossa because they were family men. I can't wait to see this conflict simulated in CM2. ------------------ Eric
10. are weather effects (wind, rain, etc.) being modelled to affect smoke? For example, will it drift with the wind? ------------------ Eric

12.
quote:
You would also have to kiss CM's entire core of realism and playability goodbye too. All of this would have to get chucked out the window to make sure the game actually could crunch numbers well enough in real time. So you would be left with crappy enemy AI, little to no Tactical AI, simplified treatment of armor, overly simplistic ballistics, etc.

Gee, what game that we all know and love does this sound like? Seriously, I think this illustrates the major problems associayed with an effective rt game on this level. It's clear that Atomic has been unable (possibly unwilling, too, but that's a separate issue) to overcome these obstacles. ------------------ Eric
13. Peter, I don't really care how much I have to pay either. Hell, I pre-ordered 2 a couple of weeks ago. I just like to grouse about the GST Eric H.
14. Maybe there's a direct correlation between climate and taxation? We here in canada get reamed pretty badly, too. I don't think we're in Norway's league, but I we're not as cold, either. Unless BTS ships the game as a gift, or something, I'll have to pay duty, the GST (tax), and a GST service charge, unless by some chance BTS registers a GST number with the Canadian gov't. Yup, we get to pay a "service" charge to be taxed. ------------------ Eric
15. I was playing the Germans in reisburg last night, and had a couple of green smg squads, with their platoon leader and a regular smg squad set up an ambush in a suspected tank approach on my right flank. A sherman with a mounted rifle squad rumbled past, missing the ambush zone and bypassing one of the grren squads. As soon as the sherman passed it (range 22m) it opened up with everything it had. It used onf of its pf-100s to brew up the tank, taking the rifle squad with it. They never knew what hit them. I've seen LOTS of pf usage, especialy from ambush. I find the squads ysing them against infantry when low on ammo, too. ------------------ Eric
