  1. Although it may be realistic to give them weapons of some kind the fear is it will promote gamey behaviour, the kind mentioned in the thread listed.

In the end, 5 freaked guys aren't going to make much difference to your battle, armed or not, so best not to worry about it smile.gif

  2. don't forget guys that squads are an abstraction, so although it may say '40m' the reality is some members of the squad may be close than that, and likewise with the enemy platoon. End result is that the front guys of a squad are able to chuck at the front guys of another squad.

Likewise hand-to-hand and hand-to-tank combat can take place as far as 20m (from memory) from the unit.

  3. NEWS FROM THE FRONT:

Brave Lt. PeterNZ, realizing that the IT boys weren't up to the mighty attack of the 'Acer Power 6100' model enemy dove head long into the trenches.

Armed with only an improvised screwdriver and the mystick goldy disk of win98-ness he tackled the might ACER which had previously defeated hordes of IT professionals.

Coming in with a flank attack he tore into its cabling and guts, it kept trying to outwit him but soon it was beaten and hammered into submission, bringing the beast to its knees before it mewed like a baby kitten and dociley dig anything he requested.

Throwing it over his shoulder he marched off into the sunset to tweak and adjust it back into life and thence to turn it upon his Foes in mighty topplement

  4. purely average.

Played some test-games for a setup i wanted to try on meeting engagments and in 5 turns had suffered no casualties and killed all the AI armor.. it's pretty easy to do really wink.gif

  5. WineCape, we'd all love to know just how many have been sold. Some of us have our own estimates, but they're just guesses since BTS are tighter than Croda's bunghole pre-pubity this issue.

We think they've sold through their order 3 times, and since you start with, say, 5,000-10,000 units as a small first run, and each run is bigger than the last they could be up to 50,000 units. Who knows!

  6. back to the tactics discussion..

I remember reading in Guderian's "Panzer Leader" that one of the death-knels of the German army was the eastern front battle where the army tried to encircle a Russian saliant. (I can't remember the name of the operation)

Apparently the Russians were so used to this kind of move they planned for it and heavily forified all areas of the salient. The end result was severely battered german force that was ripe for the counterattack which came next.

As for the german generals and interference from the top, remember that by late in the war most of the general staff was well removed from the battles their men fought and furthermore were, as a rule, Hitler's toadies, ready to nod and agree with anything he said.

    anyway

  7. You nasty bunch of vomit-laden pustules. I spend a few days away and I come back to find JUNIOR members are posting freely to the peng thread! What in gods name is going on?!

Well my pc is still shagged, north england is a snowy waste. But the real ale was nice.

I shall attempt to continue to destroy you (those I'm playing) in the next week or so.

You may now return to your scheduled mewing and fawning.

  8. Ambush is triggered by any unit. Pretty realistic behavior really, a unit is not often going to be stoic enough to wait out passing infantry on the off-chance they won't be spotted.. and will shoot or run in my mind. If I were you I would have backed him up with a squad of infantry, they could have taken out the advancing infantry quickly and the tank wouldn't have spotted the PS till too late.. smile.gif

  9. by tone down do you mean change the historically accurate values?

Guys, this game is based on the principles of military history and science. If the Mk IV's armor is X mm thick, then that's how thick it is. If a lump of metal traveling at 800m/s would penetrate x thickness of metal at x distance, then it does, and it did in real life.

Remember, in CM you're dealing with close engagement ranges and often unusual force structures. If a 37mm could penetrate a mk 4 in CM, then it does so because it could do so in real life.

Changing points is another matter, and you may have a point there. I really like hte mk 4, it's more accurate than the allied gear and nimble as well. You don't want it hit by stuff so I just use them how i use allied gear.

They seem about right to me..

  10. Bad news, my computer is dying. Blue screened and won't get to windows at all, in safe or normal mode. One of the IT guys here wants to have a look at it which means it will certainly never be fixed before christmas. I will probably be able to send out files again on about the 3rd or 4th. That also means last day of internet access is Friday.

    Die die a lot now.

  11. I found the 'excessive' patriotism in parts of SPR rather off-putting and cliched.

Any study of men at war shows that Patriotism is way down on the list of reasons why they are there. Generally the number one reason is to look after/stick with their buddies. (see 'An intimate history of killing'). Patriotism is something we smooth over the conflict with like jam on toast, makes it taste and look a lot better.

  12. We've moved again? Darn, I feel like some trailer trash having to pick up and move to another park because the dog has been sick too many times on the managers ford and the cat's constant dioreah is starting to clog up the local stream. I'm sure the Americans on this board know what I'm talking about.

Well, I'm pleased to say some games are drawing to a close. NOTE I am going to the wastes of North England on Saturday and will be unable to return a file till I get back on the 3rd of Jan as the north has neither electricity or phone lines.

For this reason, if you're Elvis, Chrisl or Mark IV it might be best just to send your surrender file in on Friday. I should be able to complete a few more turns before then to show ya how bad it really is, and how little chance you have.

As for the rest of you. I shall have to stretch your torment out a bit I guess.

  13. While you have valid points on the different training and organisational structures, I'd say most here feel that in the end the experience system CM uses is really the best way of definning different qualities.

In the end, put two fairly evenly equiped and doctrined platoons opposite each other, in the end it will be the platoon who is most experienced that will win out.

I think to look at it just from those other factors is like saying "this is a great saw and drill and box of nails, it is innevitable that the house that is built will be fantastic". Put me behind them tho, and.. ah.. well, not the same result :>

    Um

    hope that made sense.

    PeterNZ

ps. Opening closed topics up for debate makes Madmatt and co. kinda tetchy wink.gif Watch out!
