  1. Well, since that part of the information can be toggled on or off at will, the only question I have is whether my opponent in a PBEM game has the same option? In other words, is that particular option and the other option toggles set by the player that starts the scenario?

  2. Robert, no offense intended smile.gif With all the people on this board it's sometimes tough to tell who does and doesn't know English as well as others. And my wife was born in Canada so I certainly wouldn't say anything bad about your fine country ... not if I want to keep my head on my shoulders.

Uhh, exactly, ... quite so ... couldn't have put it better myself.

  4. I ... I don't know what to say. I'm assuming that English isn't your first language, which is fine, but I really can't understand what you're asking. Want to try again?

  5. Matt, let's talk about this apparent obsession of yours with ... "poo". I'm afraid you may not have grasped the finer points of "anal retentive". smile.gif

  6. AND ... would it be reasonable to assume (I know, I know ...) that the scenarios will be played double blind in terms of the maps, OOB etc? And while I know that none of our esteemed DM's(is that what we're calling them?) can be bought ... could they perhaps be leased? smile.gif

  7. I look at it this way, I really want to play CM2, CM3 and (for all I know) CM47 (Combat Mission - The Mexican American War). The only way I know to help that happen is to make sure that BTS does very well with CM1, and the best way is to get the word out.

  8. Hey if you're into throwing money away, just send the $17 to me, it will do just about as much good smile.gif Seriously, I also was very hyped for the game and bought it the minute it came out. I have never been so disappointed in a game in my life. The interface was horrible, to the extent that you really couldn't do anything you wanted to do. The enemy could shoot THROUGH hills and all the terrain was that awful 2D wall crap that looked okay till you went past it. It was a very bad game. Trust me, after seeing and playing the beta and gold demos of CM, you've got nothing to worry about, it's not another Across the Rhine {shudder}.

  9. Doug, I'm with you, where's the sense of accomplishment in creating a scenario that just anyone can create. No esoteric keystrokes, no bugs that you have to get around by sacrificing a chicken (man I went through a LOT of chickens in Age of Rifles) and the random generator sounds like it takes ALL the fun out of it. Way to go BTS, ruin it for me.

  10. Ah yes, those were the days weren't they? I was into 25mm myself, and the look of all those lovely troops on the carefully constructed terrain ... {sigh} ... of course it took THREE HOURS to set the damn thing up smile.gif I remember reading a "suggestion" by some weird guy who thought that to simulate the real feeling of warfare, whenever you destroyed an enemy stand you should be able to hammer it to bits ... with a real hammer. smile.gif

  11. Correct me if I'm wrong (and I'm sure the Grognards will smile.gif ) but I believe the original use of the term Grognard was by Napoleon and was referring to the original Old Guard, his Imperial Guard. The story, IIRC, was that the Guard was grumbling as soldiers are wont to do, and Napoleon referred to them as his "grognards." Wargamers picked it up, as you might expect, and adapted it to their own purpose.

  13. I tend to agree with Mxm2, while the ostensible reason for the war was one of states rights and the right of secession from the Union, the root cause of it all was slavery. While the North certainly invaded the South, and while that was the prime motivation for many of the Southerns fighting, the invasion wouldn't have taken place had it not been for slavery.

Regarding using the CM engine for an ACW game, Sid Meirer (sp?) did a very good job with his Gettysburg game, which is a real time game. Firaxis then did a follow on about Antietam but it wasn't as well received. IMHO, about all you could use from CM would be the terrain, the engine would have to be totally reworked in almost every area to be useful.

  14. So ... how about those Dallas Cowboys huh? I figured a little American football reference couldn't be a hell of a lot more off topic than the stuff we've been discussing smile.gif Not that I mind, it's been interesting and informative ... mostly.

Berlichtingen, the movie I was referring to, if I have the title right, was "Battle of the Bulge" with, among others, Robert Shaw (no relation) playing the SS Panzer leader. The tanks definately were rumbling through the forest. You may be thinking of "Patton" which had the same tanks (M48's?) playing the part of German tanks. In either case it drives me crazy. At least for SPR (and Kelly's Heros) they tried to mock up something that resembled a Tiger.

  15. Thanks Matt, I thought it was 20 but wasn't sure. I didn't make my question clear enough (but then I'm good at that), just as a frame of reference and to get an idea of how much a "level" of elevation is in the game, how many levels are there in the VOT scenario and which global scale does it use?

  16. Laurie, as you are undoubtedly aware, Fionn is Irish. As someone who is of Irish blood I can tell you that the Irish are a contrary and stubborn group. I recall a quote that I wish I could attribute ... "The Irish are a fine, mad race ... all their wars are happy and all their songs are sad."

If anyone COULD mix oil and water ... it would be an Irishman who would do it. smile.gif

  17. Which brings up another interesting question that you may not be able/wish to answer. Based upon pre-orders how are sales looking? I ask from a purely selfish standpoint, I want the other versions of CM to be financially viable. On the alturistic side, I'd like to think that you guys would be rewarded for this wonderful product and your support of the community.

  18. Just for a frame of reference, how many "levels" of terrain are in the VOT scenario? I recall that the editor supports up to ... 20? BTW, the terrain is great in the scenario.

  19. NEWS FLASH

    Associate Press Wire Service

    COLD SNAP HITS HELL!

In an official announcement from the press office of Hell, representatives of the nether regions have confirmed reports that Hell is suffering from a sudden and unexpected bout of cold weather. Reports indicate that brimstone pits are no longer flowing but instead have solidifed into masses of sulfer, while the jets of fire have cooled to zippo sized puffs barely hot enough to singe hair.

"I just don't understand," complained one senior demon. "First Matt beats Fionn in a PBEM game and now this. There is one bright spot though, we still have a large supply of Netscape POO to throw at the residents."
