  1. You speak about a completely different topic in this case. Even if we speak about aerial FOs these will have to use spotting rounds before going over to FFE. I tend to believe that the initial precission of an aerial FO would be lower. Its much harder to judge its own position correctly and giving the right ammount of corrections if you fly over the battlefield.
  2. The point is that for pre-registered artillery you have to... register in the first place. No defender would simply stay in place when the attacker does the registering. If the fire-zones are not registered by spotting rounds before how does the artillery know it will be on target? A defender can do this work prior to the engagement by trail-shots while the enemy has no way to observe the registering shots. The attacker simply can not register fire zones without telling the defender what he is up to do next....
  3. Thanks JasonC for the clarification. Doenst this show that the current implementation of the off-map support is kinda badly simulated? I also have a bad feeling about the sizes off targeted areas. I cant imagine 2 tubes of Longtoms targeting a 50m² area ordered directly by a squad-leader or Platoon leader. Its feels out of the scope. Same for air assets. I tend to believe that the more abstracted way of CM1 better reflected tactical reality.
  4. One thing i already wondered about is if the use of "point-target" and "linear target" for all kind off offmap assets. Was it common practice to use this kind of "target-order" expecially for bigger caliber batteries? Was it comman at all to use 1 or 2 barrels for fire-missions? I was always under the impression that a much greater number of tubes was used. Maybe we got to much influence from the "CMSF" setting in this case?
  5. The tactic worked in CMBB or CMAK with very good results, i dont see why it should be a limitation to the new engine when the older could handle the same situation. Anyway not much people seem to be interested in this topic
  6. Noone else who thinks that WP rounds are kinda useless at the moment? Since its use seems to be a well used tactic its kind of a additionally disadvantage not to be able to use it against those heavy beasts,
  7. No, i did not realy try to directly aim at the enemy tank. I tried to shot smoke/WP in front of the enemy tank. While i have no problems to get my tanks to shoot smoke in front of enemy infantry and guns it seems like the AI always overrides my "shot smoke" order when they face enemy armor. I am not an expert on this topic but from what i´ve read i would say using smoke was a quit common practice.
  8. At least there is a specific fire-order for smoke/Wp rounds. The 75mm Shermans have some WP on board, which would make a realy good way of blinding cats. Anyone else have an idea?
  9. I cant get my tanks to shoot WP rounds when in contact with enemy tanks. I tried several times to use WP to blind an enemy sitting on the next hill. My tanks just ignored my command to fire smoke and tried to kill the enemy armor instead. Which was a bad idea since it was a Panther head on. So how do i get my boys to obey my orders in this case?
  10. Can someone pls explain how to install all these mods in general? Do i need some kind of mod-manager? Or where do i save the files to?
  11. +1 We indeed urgently need a way to order AT assets to hold fire on infantry. I would also prefer if infantry and mg units hold fire on tanks with small arms until ordered to target a specific tank. Its kinda frustrating to see grunts almost harmlessly banging away on a tank several hundrets of meters away revealing their position to be liquidated by the tank in return.
  12. While i also feel a bit "disturbed" about the first hit performance i came across another issue i always had with CMSF. I drove a Panther down the road knowing exactly the location of an enemy tank. I used the arc to narrow down the spotting to reduce and enhance the spotting time. When the panther came clear of some buildings the Panther and the M4 were about 80 meters apart. The M4 beeing directly on the 12 position with the turret trained exactly toward the enemy. It took about 45 seconds for the panther-crew to detect the enemy tank. While i can live with such a performance if the enemy tank is on the deep flank or in some kind of concealement i dont believe that any crew would take about 1 minute to identify an enemy tank sitting directly in front in a distance of 80 meters across a street.
  13. Following guys like Matin van Crefeld "Fighting Power" or Trever N. Dupuy the germans had and kept an edge in actual combat until the end of the war. Basicly one can say that where fights actually happened (and were not decided by shere firepower) between troops the outcome was in favor of the german troops. And this regardless of beeing on the offense or defense.
