Armour Thickness

Recommended Posts

Hi CM addicts,

this is my first post in this forum and i have to say outstanding game!

The new engine rocks and all the new stuff, it's incredible. :)

But there is something i don't understand:

I read the manual and it says the Panther D, A have a 60mm lower front hull, but the model G early has a 50mm plate. That's something driving me nuts, because i never heard from a 50mm front plate.

Even CMBO, CMBB and CMAK simulates the Panther with correct front hull. Why is it modeled with 50mm in CMBN? Is there a reliable source?

I hope my english isn't that bad... :o

Thx for answers.

Sincerely Kane

Kane,

Welcome on board!

You have a good eye for catching details in the manual.

Regarding your question, I have Jentz's "Germany's Panther Tank", Schiffer Publishing, 1995, open at my desk right now. On page 86 it states that the Ausf. G differs from both the A and D by having a "Front Lower Hull" armor of "50 mm @ 55 degrees", whereas the A and D have, as you stated, 60 mm at the same slope.

Jentz uses the manufacturer's drawings for his references. I hope you consider him a reliable source. (I do not know what source(s) BF.C used for their armor values.)

The manual in CMBN appears to be correct.

Regards,

Ken

Interesting. I only have "Encyclopedia of German Tanks of World War 2" - Chamberlain, Doyle, Jentz which lists all 3 as 60mm@55, but this book is originally published in 1978 ( my copy is the 1999 reissue ).

Clearly Jentz collaborated on this, but I assume new information came to light for your book which hasn't made it into the reissue of mine.

Thx for your answers!!

Jentz is of course a reliable source, but i never heard it before.

All my books about german tanks say Panther has 60mm. Even Spielberger and his book Panther and it's variants say 60mm.

Maybe i will buy the book of Jentz. :D

Sincerely Kane
