Casualties

How does the engine determine who is killed or wounded? Is it random or are their modifiers for the weaponry used? I've noticed that my men are KILLED more often outright when something particularly devastating hits them (i.e. 155mm direct hit), or is that observer bias?

Also sometimes my chaps don't seem too inclined to help the wounded, even when there's no enemy troops around. They'll help SOME but still leave several others on the ground unassisted. I feel bad for the wounded, it guilt trips me to leave them out there all day!

Yes, bigger explosions are more likely to outright kill people. And men caught in a barrage might first get wounded, and as more shrapnel hits them, die in the place. It's terrible.

It also depends on cover; eg. being behind an armoured vehicle will give some protection against explosions.

As for your second issue, make sure your soldiers are in the same action spot as the wounded that you want to administer buddy aid to. This can be a bit tricky to see when the wounded are lying on the border between two action spots. Tip: zoom in, highlight each of the possible action spots with a move order, and then pick the one that has the "most" of your wounded soldier on it.

I used to think the game over-modeled killing effects since I often see more dead than wounded on the battlefield. Now that I'm hearing about how effective buddy aid is, I may have to re-visit the issue. I don't think I'm treating enough of my wounded so I have more KIA's as a result. I know, it sounds cruel, but war is heck you know and we have a mission to accomplish!

I belive it's definitly not random. Small arms fire tend to wound more often rather than kill in instant. Artillery on the other hand slaughters soldiers if it hits close enough.

I must say it's a dramatic sight when one man helps the other and everything blows up around and bullets flying. Usually the helper gets killed too. Very intense.

One must also take into account what 'obviously dead' really means. I know this sounds silly, but regardless of how gravely someone may be injured, they are usually still alive (technically) for some time afterwards, and may or may not die with or without treatment (a different story). The only 'symptoms' of being obviously dead beyond doubt (as I learned when I was a paramedic), are the head being completely removed from the body, head and/or torso crushed beyond recognition, or immediately visible signs of decomposition across the entire body. Anything else counts as an injured person and must be treated appropriately.

This may be a reason why sometimes soldiers in CM games are marked as 'wounded' when you are thinking "Jeez, that guy is dead for sure..."

I think the game basically describes its casualties as those wounded unable to move any longer, but of course there is a wide range of reasons they may not be able to move on their own...e.g. their legs are blow off or they could simply be concussed out of sensibility.
