  1. I was going to start a whole new thread but actually this is a good one to ask this one. I'm really confused about calling indirect fire with on-map mortars. How can you do this with any degree of flexibility? Whenever I call for fire with one of my HQ units the wait time is in the 3 to 4 minute range... which is a lifetime in a firefight. It seems the only way to really use them effectively is for them to have direct LOS but they usually get shot in a hurry. Naturally I'm doing something wrong and I know it has to do with the communications system. Help?
  2. You know this is a good idea. I would like this too. I also miss being able to enlarge units in cmx1.
  3. Any of you chaps know of a good resource to study d-day from the German perspective on the tactical level? I'd like to read more about how the Axis staged their defense and adapted to changing conditions throughout the day.
  4. I would recommend to you that you pay a visit to iTunes and download episode 27 of Dan Carlin's Hardcore History, which is the first episode of his "Ghosts of the Ostfront" series. The opening monologue is insanely captivating as he talks about the human remains still to be found today on the Russian steppe and how, in a very real sense it's a "good" thing so many ordinary Germans, who weren't different from anyone else, died and were stopped at Stalingrad, and that the bone fields serve as a monument to the misery that just one person is capable of realizing if he attains power. It's free and was mesmerising when I heard it some weeks ago.
  5. The German soldiers in my mind are worth as much remembrance as anyone else. Particularly on the Eastern Front their story drives home the dangers of what can happen when government runs amok. One of my biggest peeves in the world is when people refer to wehrmacht soldiers as "Nazis", as if Hans from Munich or had any say in the matter. I think that's one of the reasons I study the ostfront so much, apart from being the largest war in history it really is a case study of two evil governments fighting each other to the death. Anyway, no matter which perspective you see it from it's all one of history's great tragedies. D-Day is worth remembering, a lot of people from my country (U.S.) and other Allied nations were killed in Normandy.
  6. August Bank Holiday and Malmedy. Make it so Wait those are commonwealth and bulge... Make it so in the future!!!
  7. So when you use explorer and redownload it it works fine? Hmm. I don't know what browser the chap uses, worth investigating. Thanks for the heads up!
  8. Hello! I've been running PBEMs for the last few days now without any problems except in one of them twice now my opponent has reported receiving a corrupt file from me that I have to run again. They run just fine once I redo the turn, but this is the only time it's happening and I'm running several other PBEMs so there must be something odd going on with my file saves on this scenario in particular. Does anyone know what might be causing this? It's not too great of a problem to redo the turn and send it again but I'm sure it's a hassle for him to have received a corrupted file twice now when he wanted to see his turn instead.
  9. How does the engine determine who is killed or wounded? Is it random or are their modifiers for the weaponry used? I've noticed that my men are KILLED more often outright when something particularly devastating hits them (i.e. 155mm direct hit), or is that observer bias? Also sometimes my chaps don't seem too inclined to help the wounded, even when there's no enemy troops around. They'll help SOME but still leave several others on the ground unassisted. I feel bad for the wounded, it guilt trips me to leave them out there all day!
  10. Despite my post count I'm not a 'noob', I've been playing Combat Mission since 2002 and used to post here quite frequently before taking a break after CMSF was released (never got into it). Have long since lost my login details and old e-mail address but I'm back now. la Valence is axis defense, I've read the US briefing but not the axis one and am going into it blind. Elite difficulty so enemy unit cards will always be of the plain 'soldier' type regardless of their actual configuration. And please only someone who won't bail on the game once the outcome is assured. E-mail me at xavito1986@gmail.com, I'll take the first chap who writes so don't be put off if I don't get back to you, I'll just contact you for another PBEM in the future. Happy gaming, glad to be back in Combat Mission
