What does this error message mean?

Can anybody tell me whether this sheds any light on my lock up problem?

Did you already change your video drivers ? Since it doesn't indicate the module that had the memory problem it's hard to interpret. Do you have anything running in the background (do a Ctrl-Alt-Del and see what is normally loaded when you boot) ?

Are you running with many mods (video and sound) ? Have you tried CM without mods to see if your lockup problem is consistent ?

"Did you already change your video drivers ?"

No, I still have the latest video driver.

"Do you have anything running in the background (do a Ctrl-Alt-Del and see what is normally loaded when you boot) ?"

I have minimized that.

"Are you running with many mods (video and sound) ? Have you tried CM without mods to see if your lockup problem is consistent ?"

I have mods installed. CMMOS and some sound mods. Do you think that this could be the problem?

Thanks.

Lockups occur with Unreal Tournament and Quake II, but not with another 3D game called La Grande Armee: Austerlitz.

No 2d game ever locks up.

I'll try a clean install of the game with no mods. How does one do this without messing up the original installation?

How does one check for a bad memory module?

Thanks.

If you use the installer you can just specify a different directory for the files to be copied to (though it may mess up your current shortcut). You can also just copy the files onto the hard drive into a directory of your choice.

If your problems started when you installed the latest video driver, then I suggest that you uninstall it and go back to the version you were using previously. I wouldn't have thought that your problems would be tied to the video driver, but it is a possibility.

Checking for a bad memory module can be a bit of a pain. Most users only have one DIMM installed, which means that they would have to swap it out with another one, which you may not have on hand. Memory diagnostic programs are next to useless. I've yet to see one accurately diagnose a bad memory module (which is admittedly hard to do with just software). The diagnostic memory testing of most of these programs is too simple to bring out the errors that some users will encounter with memory.

Since you don't seem to be having problems with your 2D game (assuming it is memory intensive enough), then a memory problem most likely won't be the issue.
