problem installing

Recommended Posts

I'm having a problem installing the game. AVG says the .exe is a virus and suggests I remove it. I've tried online download and CD download (I bought both). I actually thought I was okay when I did the CD download. I hadn't played it yet but I managed to get it on my computer, so I went ahead and bought the most recent patch, but then I noticed when I tried to patch the game it would not let me patch over the .exe and then when I tried to start the game it it did the same thing it did when I downloaded it online. Virus.

I'm a computer idiot, so there's no telling what I'm doing wrong.

ps. I pasted and reposted this from the main forum, when I noticed there was a separate tech support section.

You're getting a "false positive" from your anti-virus software regarding our installer/programs. The eLicense encryption within the programs can't be deciphered by the anti-virus software, so the 'heuristics' scanning (guessing) tags the file as a virus/trojan since they can behave in similar ways.

You'll need to temporarily disable your anti-virus/security software when running the installer, patches and at least launching the game for the first time to activate the license key.

If you're running Windows Vista or Windows 7 I would also suggest launching the installer, patch and program with a right-click and select "Run as administrator" from the popup menu.

You may also want to be careful which patches you install (there are other 'distributions' that have different patches) and making sure to get all of the ones you need. The patches are usually NOT COMPREHENSIVE and will often require an earlier patch to make sure that you get everything. If you have the CMSF base game, then you may need the 1.10 patch, the 1.21 patch and finally the 1.31 patch.
