lookfar
Just bought a second copy of Combat Mission so i could play a network game with my friend. However, almost every time we play, the game crashes during Data Transfer. Only twice out of about 12 attempted games did we manage to complete the game. He runs on windows xp and i on 98...is this the problem ? and if so why is it intermittent. Any suggestions would be gratefully recieved. thanks.
Schrullenhaft
You need to be more specific as to which version of CM you're running. CMBO has a known bug where a captured crew will kill a TCP/IP game (the downloading 'client' hangs - the server shows the turn with no problem). This is worked-around by sending the 'client's' last autosaved turn as a PBEM and play one or more rounds that way. You can then go back to a TCP/IP game with one of these PBEMs (errr... something to that effect). For more details you can search for 'crew capture bug' and it may turn up some more detailed workarounds. However the next time you run into capturing a crew, the bug will occur again. CMBB doesn't have this bug, but some people complained of certain lockups during the data download process. I don't believe any of these problems were consistently re-creatable and they may have been instances of network connections going bad.
CMplayer
Not that Schrullenhaft needs backup, but my experience was exactly the same as what he describes. Crash right after someone was captured. Again, to repeat what he said: Open the autosave file. Choose pbem, instead of tcp. Play a few turns by mail. Resume tcp.
