Schrullenhaft Posted May 6, 2010 Share Posted May 6, 2010 Could you provide us a few more details about your computer(s) such as the technical specs (CPU, video card, etc.) and which Windows version you are using ? Does the Demo install without issues ? Where did you download the demo from and how large is the file ? I'm not sure if the demo supports this or not, but you could try launching the game and VERY QUICKLY pressing the <Shift> key. If there's any sort of movie that plays at the beginning, this will disable it. The initial process for CMBB and other 'CMx1' games is to go through the resolution selection process, which are usually black screens with either white or green text and very simple boxes that list the current resolution and refresh rate. This is an automatic process that occurs when you first launch CMBB or when you delete the 'Prefs' file (which stores the selected resolution and refresh rate). This process will start at your current desktop resolution, but possibly at a higher vertical refresh rate that your video card supports (rather than your monitor's actual support). So it is possible to have a 'scrambled' display when CMBB attempts to run some resolutions. So if you're running at 1280x1024 at 60Hz, CMBB may launch and try resolutions and refresh rates starting at 1280x1024, but at possibly 120Hz. This will most likely either result in a scrambled screen, a black screen or an error message from your monitor saying 'signal out of range', etc. Just let your computer sit for awhile and with 5 to 10 seconds CMBB will try the next lower refresh rate at that same resolution, until it reaches 60Hz for a particular resolution. At that point it will try the next lower discrete resolution that CMBB and the video card support. In this case it may be 1152x864 or possibly 1024x768. However it will again try this at 120Hz or whatever the maximum may be supported by the video card. Again it will go through subsequently lower vertical refresh rates automatically until it reaches 60Hz and then go on to the next lower resolution. Preferably you will want to select the resolution and vertical refresh rate that is 'native' to your display or what you usually run your desktop at. This is done by clicking the 'Select' button on the screen when a resolution is viewable or possibly pressing the <Enter> key (if I recall correctly, the button may be labeled differently). This process will occur if there is no 'Combat Mission BB Prefs' file in the CMBB directory. This file will only be created with a normal exit from the game (which hasn't occurred yet). So I would assume that you get this resolution selection process each time you attempt to run the game. It will be a bit of text (a lot of it unnecessary for our purposes here), but it will give us some more information about your video and drivers. I assume that you may be using an Intel integrated video, which should generally work with CMBB. To run the DxDiag, go to the Start Menu > Run command > type in (without quotes) 'dxdiag'. This will run the DirectX Diagnostic. When this finishes loading up, click on the 'Save All Information...' button on the bottom of the dialog box. This will open up a Save dialog box and you just need to save the file to somewhere you can easily find it. Open it up with a text editor such as Notepad and then copy and paste the contents to a post in this thread. I couldn't find any downloads at trymedia.com. What is the exact site you downloaded the demo from ? Were there any errors during the install ? Do you know what the size of this download file is ? Towards the bottom of this CMBB Demo download page are three links that should take you to the current versions of the demo. The files should be about 60MB or so in size. CMBO does have the option to use 'software rendering' and run at 640x480. CMBB requires hardware 3D rendering and a minimum resolution of 800x600. If your laptop's video chip doesn't meet the minimum video specifications listed in the demo page (16MB of video memory and 800x600 minimum resolution), then it may be the culprit in preventing the game from working. However these requirements are pretty minimal compared to what is available from most laptops. The drivers for these are a bit problematic and I wouldn't be surprised if CMBB does NOT work with this graphics adapter. You can get the latest drivers from the VIA website. To get the driver for your particular laptop select: 1. Microsoft Windows 2. Windows XP 3. Integrated Graphics 4. VN800 UniChrome Pro When you download and unzip this file there will be two .zip files. Unzip the one named 'VT3314_WinXP_22-00-03a_Embedded_wIShld.zip'. With these files extracted you can run the setup.exe file and hopefully it should install. BEFORE installing you may want to make sure you have a backup installation of your current video drivers so you can re-apply them if these drivers don't work properly or have other problems. I'll have to check out a UniChrome Pro based video system and see if I can get CMBB to work with it or not. One very likely issue is that you may have to 'Alt-Tab' to minimize the game and then re-maximize it to 'force a refresh' in order to see text on some of the 2D setup screens and the scenario selection screen. The TryMedia download is for a Strategy First version of CMBB. The download you pointed me to is a 'RealNetworks' downloader that will download the file, which is posted as being over 250MB in size. I'm not sure what is included with that download and why it is bigger than the one we provide. You can try one of the downloads I mentioned earlier. Here's the Worthplaying download. Schrullenhaft Posted May 7, 2010 Share Posted May 7, 2010 Playing with both the full version of CMBB 1.03 and the 1.04 Demo, a UniChrome integrated video DID work. Supposedly this motherboard should have had a UniChrome Pro integrated video (P4M800 chipset), but the actual device ended up being a UniChrome adapter. Anyway, the drivers I used were both older than what you have running (2-2-2004 and 3-9-2005) and they both worked. There wasn't even a problem with the 2D display screens; everything worked (I didn't check fog though, probably not present). Based on this I would guess that your integrated VIA/S3 UniChrome Pro should work with CMBB. However it is a slightly different core (UniChrome and UniChrome Pro) and different chipsets (P4M800/KM400 and VN800). Still I would have guessed that it would have worked. The driver linked to above is even newer, 11-10-2009. However newer is not always better. I've seen integrated graphics work fine with the CMx1 series and then newer drivers would come out and all of a sudden there would be problems (black screens, corruption, etc.). I've seen this especially with SiS chipsets and it has been awhile since I messed around with the VIA/S3 integrated video. I suggest downloading and trying out the Demo that comes from us (the Worthplaying download link) and see if that works any differently for you. When you select a resolution, it should be visible (don't press any keys until you can see the resolution selection clearly on the screen). Schrullenhaft Posted May 7, 2010 Share Posted May 7, 2010 I'm not sure what Strategy First is offering with their demo/trial. It is about 250MB according to the link you provided. The full game is about 677MB or so in size. It's possible that their trial offers more features than the demo, which can only play the three included scenarios (no editor or quick-battle generator). Depending on what your school blocks, you could try the download from our site (assuming the more popular download sites are blocked). At 68MB its definitely smaller than the Strategy First download, which I can only assume may be time-limited if it is a fuller-featured trial program. Do you have 'Computer Administrator' rights on the computers you're attempting to install CMBB on ? CMBB makes few, if any, changes to the registry, but I'm not sure what the Strategy First demo/trial version may do (especially if they are installing their copy-protection/DRM). 0 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Schrullenhaft Posted May 7, 2010 Share Posted May 7, 2010 I can't remember if the following advice may be fully applicable to CMBB and CMAK in the same way it was for CMBO: You may want to try launching the game and VERY QUICKLY press the <Shift> key. I believe this should disable any 'intro movie' and dump you straight to the main menu. The issue you're having MIGHT be one of video codecs (assuming Strategy First included a small intro video rather than a 'splash screen'). Do you remember what you selected for your resolution to start up CMBB ? Again, the selection box should be easily read in order to make a selection. Making an incorrect selection could possibly result in a black screen, though I wouldn't necessarily expect an error dialog box. If a resolution is NOT selected however, then eventually you WILL get a DirectX error message (because the 'resolution selection process' can start over once it has reached the 'end'). 0 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
