JonS
Does anyone know why Op PLUNDER and Op VARSITY aren't collectively known as Op PLUNDER VARSITY, in the same way that Op MARKET and Op GARDEN are known as Op MARKET GARDEN?
hoolaman
Maybe because plunder varisty sounds more like a porno and doesn't make a cool word like market garden. I actually didn't know MG was two ops until I just read it here, so I guess it has caught on as a single name for a single op.
Affentitten
Was MG really known by the double handle at the time?
JonS
Aff, I don't know, but it certainly is now, and it didn't take long for it to become that way. (For example: http://cgsc.cdmhost.com/cdm4/item_viewer.php?CISOROOT=/p4013coll8&CISOPTR=2899&CISOBOX=1&REC=2 dated no later than 10 May 1946)

Why did it 'catch on' for MG, but not VP?
Affentitten
It could be something as simple as popular misunderstanding. Market Garden is a phrase that you encounter elsewhere in life. Varsity Plunder isn't. And the former was also a more famous operation than the latter, so it got reinforced.
JonS
Yeah, but the link above is to a 21st Army Gp report written immediately after the war. I doubt *they* were confused by a popular misunderstanding. I suspect you're generally right though - the 21AG report refers to it as MARKET GARDEBN on the cover, possibly to save space, the operation became famous, and the 'lazy'' naming became fixed.
